Bears shift Williams back to left tackle

By Brad Biggs, Tribune reporter2:13 p.m. CDT, August 11, 2012

BOURBONNAIS -- The Chicago Bears put all the pressure they could on J’Marcus Webb when he played nearly the entire game at left tackle in Thursday's preseason opener against Denver. Now, they are turning the heat up on himback at training camp.

After not playing at left tackle for two weeks, former first-round draft pick Chris Williams was back at the positionduring Saturday’s practice at Olivet Nazarene, signaling Webb could be in jeopardy of losing the job.

This was the first practice Williams has spent at left tackle in 14 days after he was switched to right tackle to take reps from Gabe Carimi so last year’s first-round pick could rest his sore knee. The move ostensibly put an end to the competition for the left tackle position as Williams was given only two days in full pads to show what he could do with the team alternating practice days.

Now, 29 days from the start of the regular season Sept. 9 against the Indianapolis Colts, it appears to be back on.

Coach Lovie Smith said the Bears were just working combinations on the line but when Williams went two weeks without practice at left tackle, he wasn’t exactly being allowed to compete for the position. Offensive coordinator Mike Tice said earlier this week that Webb had not taken the job and run with it, meaning practice had not been what he was seeking from the third-year starter. So, Webb was on the field for 41 of the 49 offensive snaps in the 31-3 loss to the Broncos.

Now, Webb will have to fight off a challenge from Williams, who got considerable playing time at right tackle against the Broncos and looked good. Webb was called for a false start and was responsible for one sack.

“I did OK,” Williams said Saturday morning before practice. “There is stuff to work on. It was the first preseason game and it was good to get out there. It was fun. After getting hurt last year and going on I.R., it was just fun to get back on the field at Soldier Field and play in front of the fans.”

Williams, who last started a regular-season game at left tackle in Week 2 of the 2010 season, said he didn’t realize how much he missed playing when recovering from wrist surgery until he got back into game action, even if it was a preseason game.

“It’s tough,” he said. “They shut you down on I.R. and you get to OTA’s and minicamp, all of that stuff is whatever. When you get back in front of the fans, it’s on. Now, I am just working.”

And Williams is working back at left tackle meaning the Bears still are not convinced of their combination on the offensive line.

Check back after practice for a complete update.

Didn't see the game, but did Webb really do that bad of an job? Thought that Webb actually won the battle at LT "unoffical" but I guess I was wrong.
What do you guys think? Is it better to have CWill on LT, or have him as swing tackle and take reps from Carimi and hope that Webb will improve?

Thanks Zif. Speaking of which, how are things over in Denmark? I haven't talked to you in a while!

It appears that my desire to have someone other than Webb play LT may not be far from coming to fruition, but knowing Tice the way we as Bears fan/pundits do, I'll believe there is a true competition at LT when I see it.

Tice is doing everything to wake up Webb, short of hitting him in the face with a 2 by 4.

I like the competition. I like how Tice is trying to get Webb to play up to his physical gifts. But at what point do you "set" the oline and quit flopping people around? Pretty soon they need to let the starters settle into their position for the season, and work on getting the unit's chemistry/timing down pat for the "real" games to begin.

But then I come back to thinking that lighting a fire under Webb is all you can try to do at this point. He has the raw talent. We just need him to play up to his potential. It will be a better Bears season if he can do this. I'm not sure C.Will is the answer at LT.....but we'll soon see.

I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

I think BBPB may have BEEN Webb. Now that he's banned I hope he gets to work to re-claim his starting LT position.

In the very brief period of time I was able to watch the Bronco game I came away with these two distinctive impressions.

    1) CWill will always struggle at RT. He's simply not strong enough or physical enough in his play to win battles in the "power game". Once he locks onto him any DE who has a halfway decent "bull rush" can drive him right back into the pocket or move him off the "POA" in the running game rather than the other way around. They can't do that with Carimi. Chris is still a "finesse" type player who can probably be depended on as a starter only at LT or as a pulling OG. He doesn't even have the power to "move the pile" in short yardage.

I think what it comes down to is either CWill wins that starting LT spot or he's gone after this year. He's very athletic but despite that he simply doesn't fit the prototype for the kind of lineman Tice wants. Those guys need athleticism and power like you find in Webb, Louis, and Carimi. Even Spencer is suspect in that regard and I think that CWill would probably outplay him if they had left him at LG but with no experienced vet OT's to play swing tackle my guess is that if he doesn't gain the start at LT they'll use him there until one of the young guys proves he can handle the job.

    2) J'Marcus Webb will never be a competent anything until he grows up and everything I've seen so far tells me he hasn't. He played far into the game because he needs reps and constant evaluation. The kid says things he doesn't mean like they came off of some kind of "storyboard" someone handed him. He talks about developing camaraderie with his fellow lineman yet he blew them off when they got together as far as the workouts Garza arranged between OTA's and camp. This kid is lazy and he doesn't want to pay the price to play the position he's being entrusted with at an NFL level.

He may have all of the right tools as far as size, wingspan, power and athleticism but he has the maturity of a twelve year old who won't even cut the lawn or take out the garbage until he's been asked to ten times or more. He needs more than just reps. He needs to become a "student of the game" and he's not doing it! Like I've been saying he's an immature "mental midget" and just like you can't "coach speed" you can't "coach stupid". I may turn out to be wrong but I see a failure parked right outside his door. He got paid too well for his talents and I think he'd rather go eat tacos and play video games with his buds than play NFL football.

Guys we're stuck with what we have for 2012 which is to say we have one "NFL Ready" OT who can play his position well enough that we don't need to worry provided his knee doesn't cause him anymore problems. Beyond that we have two others who are gonna struggle no matter where you play them and all we can hope for is that one of them improves enough that with the shorter drops, quicker throws, and Cutler's mobility we can manage to just "get by" for one more year. Maybe this kid James Brown develops enough that he can be counted on as a backup later this year but I doubt we open the season that way.

The handwriting is now on the wall for Phil Emery to see and it's very clear. We need more upgrades on that line and it begins with a LT who can be trusted to handle a pass rush consistently not just when he feels like it. No passing on a good LT prospect in FA or the draft next year. No more we can "coach the guys we have up". The basic talent level of both CWill and Webb simple isn't good enough to make a top LT out of and neither can play hard enough or smart enough to overcome that.

I'm just waiting for them to move him back to LG and leave him the fuck be. The level of sheer stupidity with which we have handled him is beyond words.
