BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- The Chicago Bears signed linebackers Xavier Adibi and K.C. Asiodu and defensive end Aston Whiteside on Saturday.

The team also waived defensive tackle Ronnie Cameron and cornerback Jeremy Ware, and placed defensive end Alex Brown on the reserve/retired list.
Linebacker Brian Urlacher returned to training camp Saturday after missing time for what the team called personal reasons, but he did not take part in the afternoon practice session.
In addition, linebackers Jabara Williams (hamstring) didn't dress for the workout, and Smith revealed that second-year player Dom DeCicco is "gonna be on the shelf a while" with a pulled groin.
"That's another reason why we had to bring in a couple of guys," Bears coach Lovie Smith said. "As you look down the football field today, we had five linebackers out of uniform. It's hard to practice that way. We're banged up at the linebacker position a little bit. We've had to bring in a couple of other players. (We) also brought in another defensive lineman."

A fifth-year veteran, Adibi has played in 38 games (eight starts) for the Houston Texans (2008-10) and Minnesota Vikings (2011), posting 55 tackles and forcing two fumbles. A fourth-round pick in 2008 out of Virginia Tech, Adibi also has recovered a fumble, in addition to making 13 tackles on special teams.
Asiodu has played in 11 games the past two seasons while tallying nine tackles on special teams with the St. Louis Rams and New Orleans Saints. Asiodu also spent part of the 2011 preseason with the Green Bay Packers, but the club released him before the regular season. Whiteside came into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Dallas Cowboys out of Abilene Christian University.

Anyone else disappointed one wasn't a LT? I have a feeling that a CLF/AFL LT would be better then the scrap heap Webb is showing to be.

Garza: O-line needs to get more physical

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- Reviewing film of the Chicago Bears offensive line’s performance Thursday night against the Denver Broncos revealed what the unit thought in the immediate aftermath of the game, according to center Roberto Garza.

“We didn’t do a lot of things good,” he said. “So we have to learn from this. Obviously, this week of practice is important and the next game is (too).”

The Bears ran eight times in the first half Thursday night for 11 yards, gaining just 41 yards total as the offensive line allowed three sacks. Chicago took a vanilla approach offensively, which likely contributed to the club's ineffectiveness.

In addition, left tackle J'Marcus Webb and guards Edwin Williams and Lance Louis were flagged once each for false start penalties.

Right tackle Gabe Carimi mentioned the coaching staff wants to see more physicality from the offensive line.

Garza concurred, while expressing frustration about the line making the same mistakes Thursday night that plagued it during the 2011 season. In former offensive coordinator Mike Martz's scheme, the Bears gave up 49 sacks (fifth-most in the NFL) last season.

So it was expected the line would perform better in the new scheme of offensive coordinator Mike Tice, which emphasizes the running game and protecting the quarterback, in part, by eliminating five-man protections.

“When you’re physical, you give yourself a chance to win the game. We have to go out there and be physical and carry what we’re doing on the practice field to the game,” Garza said. “It’s still the first game of preseason. It’s still early in camp. Unfortunately, you think you cleaned (things) up and you think you’re past that, but obviously we’re not. We’re going to continue to work and continue to execute and work on our techniques.”

Let me point out the following facts:

LT: Carimi & CWilliams > Webb
    LG: CWilliams > Spencer
    RT: Louis > Webb

Move Carimi the to left and let Louis play RT like he did last season. He sure is not fantastic on the right, but he's definitely got more potential than Webb. Move Spencer to RG and let CWilliams go back to LG. Problem "fixed".

    LT: Carimi
    LG: CWilliams
    C: Garza
    RG: Spencer
    RT: Louis

Yeah, I thought they might at least be able to find a couple of those highway barricades and let them play LT then at least DE's would have to run around them to get to the QB. Maybe the Illinois Dept. of Transportation could loan them a few and Tice could put them into them competition too.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I understand that they use the cones to presently train Webb with. The cones go against Webb and most of the time Webb can win. Lovie stated that "Webb says the cones are tricky but usually he can find a way to block them. We just need to get him more reps against those cones. We may also look into using some of the smaller cones to give him more confidence. Coach Tice is confident that he will be able to manhandle the large cones before the season starts. We have lots of confidence in him"

Sorry to say I don't see Webb ever being able to handle the Large cones.

They don't use those kind of cones. They have hard, pointy tips and can take an eye out. Strictly a safety issue. Plus, as JJ said, these are obviously too large for Webb to handle.
