It's Confirmed......It's Competition at LT Again.............

Battle for Bears' left tackle job is back on

Williams shares first-team reps with Webb

By Brad Biggs, Chicago Tribune reporter 7:08 p.m. CDT, August 11, 2012

BOURBONNAIS — The Bears returned to practice Saturday and reignited a competition that ended two weeks ago by moving Chris Williams back to left tackle.

The former first-round draft pick shared first-team reps with J'Marcus Webb as Williams lined up at left tackle for the first time in 14 days. Coach Lovie Smith said "all positions are open," and while that surely isn't the case, it sure looks like the grip Webb had on the job is weakening.

The Bears played Webb into the fourth quarter of Thursday's 31-3 exhibition-opening loss to the Broncos at Soldier Field, a highly unusual move for a veteran. Webb responded by releasing a statement through his agent Saturday morning, affirming his commitment to work hard and calling the lengthy outing "preparation for our winning season."

It certainly hasn't been what you are accustomed to watching in a position battle.

Webb and Williams opened training camp rotating days with the starters. Williams got two days in full pads with the first team before he was abruptly switched to right tackle to take some of the workload off Gabe Carimi's right knee, but one that ostensibly ended the competition. Williams couldn't compete to play at left tackle, where he hasn't played in a game since the second week of 2010, backing up Carimi.

"I have always had a fair shot," Williams said of the competition. "I just come to work. Come Week 1, we'll have the best five guys out there. It will all work itself out. Obviously, they wanted me at right tackle for a reason. I just go to work."

Williams didn't want to look into the latest development any further, and if Webb was surprised, he didn't show it.

"Not at all," he said. "It's definitely something (Smith) felt they needed to do. Whatever the Bears organization needs me to do, I am going to do and do it with a smile on my face."

Webb said film review from the game went well. He was on the field for 41 of the 49 offensive snaps. Where this heads from now remains to be seen. Offensive coordinator Mike Tice will not meet with media until Monday, but when camp opened he said he wanted to make a decision as quickly as possible.

Now, you wonder if a selection might be delayed until before the third exhibition game Aug. 24 at the Giants. If it's truly an open competition, Williams will have to get time with the starters Saturday when the Bears play host to the Redskins.

Williams also got extended playing time against the Broncos and said his game tape held up.

"I did OK," he said. "There is stuff to work on. It was the first preseason game and it was good to get out there. It was fun. After getting hurt last year and going on IR, it was just fun to get back on the field at Soldier Field and play in front of the fans."

He said he didn't realize how much he missed playing when recovering from wrist surgery until he got back into game action, even if it was an exhibition game.

"It's tough," he said. "They shut you down on IR and you get to OTAs and minicamp, all of that stuff is whatever. When you get back in front of the fans, it's on. Now, I am just working."

And Williams is working at left tackle, meaning the Bears are not convinced of their combination on the offensive line.

This is old news. We've been hearing about this for the past 24 hours. But I'm sort of glad to hear it because I think that it is wise to give CWill the opportunity to take the job away from the slacker Webb. CWill at least works hard and DOES NOT MAKE EXCESSIVE STUPID PENALTIES LIKE WEBB.

In the Lovie Smith world of glasses "half empty" and "half full" I'm seeing this one as "half empty".

This foolishness should have been resolved more than a week ago and maybe it would have been if they hadn't moved CWill over to RT to give Carimi some rest when we had two other OT's who could have done that instead.

The excuse was that Tice couldn't trust two inexperienced guys to protect Cutler in last Thursdays game and I admit I bought into that but then they never even played Cutler anyway. So when that decision was made then why didn't they start using Brown and Brandon in the second quarter and move CWill back to LT and let him alternate series with Webb then? Not enough practice reps before the game? Whose fault is that?

God damn but I'm getting sick of this "Chinese Fire Drill" cluster fuck of a game plan concerning this line. Fine, let CWill have the majority of the LT reps this week and start him next game. If he outplays Webb by a wide enough margin to think he should be the guy then leave him the fuck there and start giving Webb reps as the swing tackle. If he doesn't win the LT spot convincingly after next weekend then put CWill back at LG, move Spencer back to RG to compete with Louis and leave Webb the fuck at LT with Brown backing him and Carimi up.

Christ we're not trying to land the Mars Rover here. Just start the same five we began last year with. We really didn't bring in or draft anyone capable of starting over the five we started last year anyway so what's the problem? If Carimi and CWill hadn't gone down we may have ended the year with a fairly decent line. So put 'em back on the field just that way and let them pick up where they left off.

There's waaaaaayyyy more drama going on here than needs to be.

I know but I felt a rant coming on so I needed something to draw from. This is stupid. Lovie and Tice are acting like a two women who can't decide where to meet for lunch.

I'm really kind of mixed up on this whole matter, soul. For starters, I really don't want Webb winning the competition at LT because of his work ethic. As he's made abundantly clear, he's more concerned with playing video games and stuffing his mouth full of tacos than he is with improving his technique at LT. At least CWill cares and really wants the position badly. And, CWill doesn't commit the stupid penalties that Webb does incessantly.

At the same time, I do understand the necessity to come to a final decision as soon as possible. Frankly, to add to your funny comment about Lovie and Tice not being able to make up their minds, I was going to suggest that they get a hotel room and put a "Do not disturb" sign on the door knob outside the room so they can fuck like two rats in a wool sock.

I hope they decide this soon; if Cutler gets hurt in preseason because of this crap, Tice is in the (metaphorical) crosshairs..

No matter which one we play there it isn't gonna be all that pretty.

CWill will get "bull rushed" to death by every DE he faces and the ground game will suffer but he won't make as many mental mistakes as "Beavis" Webb and he'll probably handle the speed rushers better.

The running game will benefit by having Webb play but he'll get faked out of his jockstrap by double moves at least a half dozen times a game and even if he limits his sacks Cutler will always have pressure coming from his blind side and that idiot Webb won't even be smart enough to yell "duck".

As far as this year goes it's pretty much a "can't win" situation whichever you put there. Neither one of them will give anymore than journeyman level play no matter what you do so since CWill is better off at LT I say just put him there and end this farce.

Webb is getting way too much benefit of the doubt and they can call it competition but so far it hasn't even been that. I think you could push Webb just as much or more with James Brown if they started giving him reps behind Webb. Just line 'em up like we did last year and start the season. If Webb falls flat on his ass then go ahead and move CWill outside then. For now I say screw it.

I know this would be against Tice's religion, but why doesn't he consider putting Carimi at LT and CWill at RT, leaving Webb as the swing T? CWill did really well at RT according to what I have read.

I'm guessing that when the dust settles we'll see Webb as our starting LT and Carimi continues at RT. I'm hoping we DO grab a veteran "training camp casualty" guy who can be our swing tackle - and C.Will is allowed to go back to LG where he played solid ball for us last year. This assumes that Webb can step up his game to where he is decent this season. Not great, but just average. I'd be ok with average. He'll get help and the play calling will help him out too.

Then in the off-season Emery (I hope) will fix the oline like he fixed our WR woes this past off-season.

Webb will be better than most people think. I base this on what I've seen so far, not on what the "experts" think. Just based on my own eyes. C.Will is not an NFL level LT in my humble opinion. I like him at LG though.

Omg, I LMAO'd at this one. I can just picture you Soul getting redfaced at your computer typing this out lol.

It's so true though. One more week and then stop effing around. Name the OL and stick with it accordingly.
