Tice on LT issue: "I have trouble sleeping at night"

Good read. Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but it sure sounds like Webb is on thin ice. Not a good thing for a 320 pound lineman

Bears' left tackle competition heats up

Chris Williams (left) and J'Marcus Webb at Bears practice. (Phil Velasquez/Chicago Tribune / August 13, 2012)

By Brad Biggs Tribune reporter 2:20 p.m. CDT, August 13, 2012

BOURBONNAIS — Chris Williams will get playing time with the starters on Saturday as the left tackle derby continues and the Chicago Bears want to see him against Brian Orakpo.

The Bears will host the Washington Redskins at Soldier Field and the competition for the starting job at left tackle is now wide open with offensive coordinator Mike Tice saying it is important to see J’Marcus Webb and Williams both go against Orakpo, who lines up on their side and has posted 28 ½ sacks in his first three seasons.

It’s another sign Webb could be losing a grip on the starting job that before the preseason opener vs. the Denver Broncos looked like he had secured.

“It’s very important, if you’re going to be real about the situation, that both guys get an opportunity to go against 98,” Tice said. “I think that is very important for us in our evaluation process.”

Tice said his biggest disappointment in the first preseason game was in the inability to run the football, something the Bears did well last season. He believes that will come around and now he’s focused on shoring up the pass protection with the starter on Jay Cutler’s blind side unresolved.

“I have trouble sleeping at night until I know that our quarterback is protected,” Tice said.

Tice said he was not sending a message to Webb when he had him on the field for 41 of the offense’s 49 snaps in the 31-3 loss to the Broncos. He said he is up front in communicating to his players what expectations are. For Webb, it’s real simple: Get better.

Webb sells T-shirts online that have the slogan “J-Webb Nation,” a curious side project considering most offensive linemen don’t make efforts to be individually recognized. Tice said he’s not concerned about social media activities and such. He’s just looking at what happens between the lines.

“Anytime your players are playing with inconsistency, as a coach you struggle,” Tice said. “So, you want to look at what you’re doing first. What kind of drills, what do you ask him to do, how are you teaching it, how are your power points going, what kind of film are you showing them, what kind of notes are they taking? I think that’s all I can do.

“I can’t worry about Webb Nation and all of the other things he does socially. That’s not for me. He’s a grown man.
I just want him to play better football for us.”

Otherwise, he might soon be passed on the depth chart by Williams

lol I just heard that interview on ESPN. He didn't even mention Webb by name when talking about him, except once. The rest of the time he referred to him as "that other guy".

Ya but there were no better options out there then this crew?
Pitt has 2 rooks on their line right now, 1 is Decastro at G, the other is Mike Adams at LT...took them 1 and 2 in the draft. If our best option was a situational DE, maybe we should have traded down and picked up Adams in the late 1st early 2nd. He, even as a rookie couldn't be a worse option then Webb.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have 6 Superbowl titles and 8 AFC titles. Hmmm? Perhaps that organization knows a little something about putting together winners. Now, with that said, they did not have all pro O-Lines with each of those rings, but they obviously know when a deficiency needs to be addressed.

Well it's about time he went from "walking on water" to "being on thin ice" in Mike Tice's fan club.

“I have trouble sleeping at night until I know that our quarterback is protected,” Tice said. (This is your own damn fault Mike. You've stuck by a guy ranked as the worst pass blocker in the NFL two years running hoping you could bring him around and it's not working and it may never work. It's time to "fish or cut bait" for J'Marcus Webb and to "shit or get off the pot" as far as your faith in him. He's done nothing to deserve it.)

Webb sells T-shirts online that have the slogan “J-Webb Nation,” (Guess this is what he spent that $1 mil rookie roster bonus of his on. He must have an entire warehouse full of 'em by now the way sales are going. If they're 100% cotton I'll take a half dozen for free. They'll make great polishing clothes for my guitars.)

“I can’t worry about Webb Nation and all of the other things he does socially. That’s not for me. He’s a grown man. (Is he really? You wouldn't by chance want a few second opinions of that would you?)

I just want him to play better football for us.” (Good luck! See the above.)

Sorry Mike but right now the kid is too immature and too much of a mental midget to be trusted to play LT in the NFL on a consistent basis. In another year or so who knows but for now just get what you can out of him and if he can't cut it then either play CWill at LT or give him help on passing plays. Just do whatever you need to in order to make sure that we don't lose Cutler again or there goes any chance we have of winning a championship.

Aw come on man let's not dig up this old dead horse and beat it to death all over again. We didn't. Over and done. Asked and answered, finis, fini'te, non acomplait. We didn't get it done this offseason but you can bet it will be the first thing on Emery's "To Do" list next year.

The sad thing is over the years we keep shitty OL players much longer than shitty DL players yet when we do dump DL players we use a draft pick that say year as a replacement.

Soul...question has to be asked when your OC is losing sleep b/c the OL is that bad. Sorry but it's true. Situational DE w/the 19th pick? I think we could have found one later, OT obviously couldn't have been found earlier.

I understand Emery's logic for doing what he did (doesn't mean I agree with it, but I understand his strategy). They rolled the dice with this oline in the hopes it would be "good enough" until they could do some serious fixing/upgrading next draft, and next year's FA's.

The way I'm personally dealing with this (so I don't totally despair) is just keeping the mind-set that what's done is done and I'm not going to get an ulcer over this (I hope).

A couple of you guys have mentioned that we COULD pick up a guy cut in training camp. I realize this won't exactly be a Pro Bowl level guy . But there could easily be somebody cut that is better than Webb. Or we could do a trade (I hate trades, but sometimes they are necessary evils).

So, the show might not be over. Emery really strikes me as a sharp guy who will do everything possible to put us in a position to win THIS year. So stay tuned.
