Cutler: "There's a lot of work to be done. This isn't a final product."

    Cutler is right.

What we see right now isn't a final product.

It never is at this point, with 1 pre-season game played to date. Fans often fail to realize this. For those who remember the 1985 season, we were butt-ugly in the entire pre-season. We got beat in the opener (scored only 3 points, by an offense that finished the season as a top-10 offense in the NFL). The second pre-season game we got beat by the Colts (one of the bottom-feeders of the NFL back then, who only won 5 games that entire '85 season.

The next game the Cowboys beat us like a drum. We only scored 13 points in that game. Of course we went on to DESTROY them in the regular season 44-0.

I guess my point (and Cutler's point) is that the team will improve over the course of pre-season. That's the purpose of pre-season. I think all of us (me included) need to factor this in and not panic or over-react at this point.

    We'll get better.

Protecting Cutler not just a job for offensive line; it's a team effort
August 13, 2012|By Fred Mitchell, Chicago Tribune reporter

    Cutler continues to preach patience.

"We're a long way away. We've got a lot of stuff we've got to figure out," Cutler said after Monday night's practice at Olivet Nazarene. "We've had good days out here; we've had bad days … We've had really bad days out here.

There's a lot of work to be done. This isn't a final product."

Here's some more of that article:

"Obviously, during training camp when you're installing, you're experimenting with all types of things," Tice said. "But now when we're getting into games, we're eliminating some stuff. Just keep doing what they're doing. It's up to the line to step up and do a better job. It's up to me to make sure we scheme it right and make sure that we're not exposing anybody that might not be up to par right now."

More from Cutler in the article:

Cutler says he is losing sleep as well, and not just because he is worrying about being sacked. "I've got the baby and all kinds of stuff," Cutler said with a smile."(The offensive linemen) are going to be fine.

Watch the actual video. He more smirked than smiled when asked about the OL. Says a lot more than his words which are rah rah for public consumption. He's not going to throw Webb under the bus like that, nor should he, but I doubt he's satisfied privately thus far.

Thanks, that adds some context here. I wouldn't expect him, the coaches OR the players at any position, to be at all satisfied at this point. But the team at this point is a work in progress. Not just the oline, but a lot of the younger or newer players - or any players at new positions this year - will be trying to "get better" and they will. In fact, if Cutler to Marshall looks rough on Saturday, I'm not going to worry either. Obviously they have each played well in past seasons, but that's not a "given" that they will look like mid-season form on Saturday. It is pre-season. Early pre-season at that.

This doesn't excuse anyone (Webb or whomever) but it simply means it's not a finished product at this point. At least that's how I look at it. If we stink once the season begins that is a whole different matter. But I'm not out on the ledge over the 1st pre-season game.

The offense will hit it's stride once they start putting together a playbook and game plans based on what works best. The talent is there and it's just a matter of time. I've done hundreds of band rehearsals in my life and we were always trying on tunes to see if they fit. Some made it while others got discarded right away and still others not until we'd played them a few times during gigs. Sometimes you need to give something a shot, an even chance of working and pare down from there. I understand how they're going about this and why but that's not my concern.

Until that line situation stabilizes what will and won't work is largely dependent on them so at the same time the RBs, WRs and TEs are working out their parts Tice needs to select his best five and put them to work as a unit. That's when we find out just how effective the playbook and game plans can be. They're not even close to that point yet and won't be even after this next game. In fact I'd guess we'll go through at least 3 or 4 regular season games still working out the kinks.

Cutler doesn't go out of his way to destroy people, but it's always publicly known when he's not pleased.

You're right Henry you can always tell but now rather than act like he's in a perpetual bad mood he's just sort of chagrined and flashes his "well sorta" smile with that little "whatta ya' gonna do" shrug. It's becoming his new trademark look. LOL
