Normally I would have just stuck this in with the thread about Sanz making the team but they're all off the front page now. I know we all felt that signing Davis may be a threat to that. After reading this today I'd say that Sanz has little or nothing to worry about because of it.
Up to speed: When veteran receiver/returner Eric Weems rolled his left ankle during the fifth practice of camp, he was uncertain how long it would take to recover. As the Bears prepare for their second exhibition game against the Redskins on Saturday, Weems still is not where he wants to be health-wise.
"It still is frustration, knowing that I'm supposed to be out there preparing for a season," Weems said. "I feel like it's holding me back from my abilities. It feels good right now, but I'm about at 80 percent."
Weems was signed as a free agent this offseason to be a major contributor on special teams and as possibly a fourth receiver. Once healthy, he still could end up as the primary kick returner in front of Devin Hester.
"It all depends on what's going on with the coaching staff and how they feel Devin's role is going to play on offense," Weems said. "Whatever they want me to do, I'll do it. … I feel really comfortable as a kick returner."
I wasn't aware that Weems has been missing since the 5th day of camp. He's still out at only 80% of normal playing ability and is uncertain how long the recovery will take. So here's the reason for bring back Davis. Weems was signed as a STeams ace and KOR specialist not primarily as a WR. Davis is filling Weems spot right now and will probably continue to do so until he returns then the Bears may or may not ditch Davis.
I don't see this having an effect on Sanz right now but Sanz does need to prove himself on STeams if he's gonna stick.
