    Webb's doin' better

Webb's play more in line with Tice's expectations

Offensive lineman answers bell against Redskins

    Dan Pompei
    On the NFL

Go ahead, buy your Brandon Marshall jersey.

    Rave about Michael Bush.

    Marvel at Alshon Jeffery.

But none of what those players did Saturday night would have been possible if not for the Bears offensive line.

And none of what those new toys do all season long is going to matter if Bears blockers are whiffing on pass rushers and Jay Cutler is taking a beating like a crash dummy.

It's not as if the Bears linemen were killing it Saturday. But no one is expecting dominance. The line was good enough, and that means something.

Asked what he was most impressed with Saturday, Cutler said, "We protected well. That's where it all starts. That was a main focus from last week to this week."

Cutler also talked about developing an attitude up front. No line can develop an attitude without confidence. And no line can have confidence without success.

There still were three sacks and two false starts in the first half.

However, the linemen did not appear to be responsible for any of the sacks.

The Bears can live with that.

Their offensive line is vulnerable. Of course, there probably are 31 other offensive lines in the league that are as vulnerable or slightly less vulnerable.

That's the state of offensive line play in the NFL.

But for the Bears to get where they want to be, they need a reliable line.

As of now, it is the one area that is unsettled, specifically at left tackle and left guard.

In the first half against the Redskins, J'Marcus Webb and Chris Spencer played four series at the positions, while Chris Williams and Chilo Rachal played three series. After halftime, Webb and Williams each played another series at left tackle while Rachal played all but the final series.

Most of the scrutiny has been on Webb, who neither blocked nor wrote poetry very impressively in the previous week. On Monday, offensive coordinator Mike Tice clearly was trying to send a message to Webb.

Tice made it clear the starting job was up for grabs, and referred to Webb as "the other guy" in the competition.

So Saturday was a big night for Webb and his linemates.

Webb answered the bell. He played with solid technique and showed urgency.

Spencer had some inconsistencies for the second game in a row. On third-and-11, he committed a false start. On the next play, he was late in picking up a delayed blitz from linebacker Lorenzo Alexander, and Jay Cutler threw an incompletion.

Rachal, a free agent picked up from the 49ers, had another false start later in the second quarter.

Webb still has the inside track to be the starting left tackle, but Williams has a chance. There also is a chance, though it's a remote one, that another player could enter the competition.

The Bears quietly have tried out a number of offensive tackles during training camp, but none of them has been the right combination of talent and affordability.

Jeff Otah and Chad Clifton probably aren't healthy enough. Marcus McNeill retired. Kareem McKenzie is out there, but is he really better than what the Bears have?

The Bears' real hope is that the offensive line can keep improving by scheme, rather than by additions.

"You have to protect your offensive line," Bears coach Lovie Smith said. "To me, very few tackles can handle a good defensive end one on one. So you have to protect them, there is no way around it. Especially on the road, in a dome, you have to give your linemen help. Giving them help can be running the football too. We have a plan."

What few people remember is the Bears had a plan last year too. Despite Mike Martz's reputation, he gave the offensive line help in many circumstances.

Despite that, the line was not good enough last year.

    Saturday night, it was.

That is pretty accurate. The age of great olines is dead. Defenses have out-evolved blocking schemes.

I was disappointed last night with the oline, but maybe I was just expecting too much. The left side of the line was good at times and bad at times. I wasn't impressed with Webb or C.Will. But they didn't stink it up, so I guess that's considered "decent" now.

I hope we upgrade by brining in 2 studs in the off-season next year. Maybe 1 in the draft and 1 in FA.

Remember that JA actually built that SB OL via FA not draft; his mistake was ignoring it afterwards to the point of no return. I'm a big fan of building a line via FA, but certain positions will always struggle to find or overpay, LT is one of them. Gotta find that guy in the draft, and the majority of the time it's early in the draft.

I read on different fourms posters cutting the O line. But what I seen was a O line doing their job. They weren't great but were far better then last week and all we can hope for is they are better next week.

The OL was OK. Hit and Miss here and there. Both OT's ( ok all 3 CW, JW , and GC ) had ok games. It was Spencer that stunk it up again. Delayed blitz pickups seems to be the thing that hurts the OL.

I believe you are right on this. I wish we had great talent. But reality is we have average talent. Webb was OK. C.Will needs to go back to that LG position. Rachel and Spencer didn't look like starter quality guards yesterday to me. C.Will is solid at LG so why not put him back there?

Brown looked just like what he is - an UFA, and there was a reason why he wasn't drafted by any team. He's just not that good. Training camp fodder, or maybe keep him for depth until we can draft a "real" NFL level tackle.

Yeah Cwill needs to be the LG if LT is settled. No way Spencer can go against the Suh's of the league. Going to need a LT, G, and C next year esp. if Cwill is relegated to the bench in his final contract year.

It was better but some of these guys have a tendency to get complacent after having an ok game. It has to happen every week. If you can't get up for that 1 game per week, where ur asked to perform well for the 35 minutes ur on the field .... theres always a nice 8hr shift at Taco Bell waiting for u.
What should you call any : Fumble , Hold , Interception , Three and out , or Sack ?

    A " F.H.I.T.S " ? or a J'Marcus ?

The first team OL, as it sets, will be fine if they continue to get blocks during the regular season. Meanwhile, the depth of the offensive line is just downright awful. When you compare what the first team OL did against Washington's front seven to what the second unit did against the Skins, it's really a difference in night and day. That's definitely one area that Phil Emery is going to have to address this coming off season. I think looking in on either Bushrod or Long would be wise, including finding whatever way possible to free up the funds to pay Long if he is able to be had. Also, I would look at drafting a G in the first round or possibly a C depending on whatever position is of greater need at the end of season.

Webb has the job. C.Will isn't being seriously considered at this point IMHO. He was just brought in to push Webb. I really don't think they ever seriously considered Webb NOT being the LT this year. This will also help the Bears not have to pay C.Will the big "starting LT money" in a new contract. They'll pay him less now, since he'll be a 2nd string guy. He would have been better off financially if they had let the guy stay in the starting LG role where he clearly out-shines Spencer and Rachal.

I can't prove any of this. But watch how this unfolds.
