Adam Podlesh's hip flexor is a "bad injury" that could force the Bears to make a roster move before the regular season.
Undrafted rookie Ryan Quigley will handle punting duties Friday against the Giants and the Bears will consider their options soon afterward when they hope to know more about Podlesh, who is scheduled to see some specialists.
His injury occurred when he tried to run down the Redskins' Brandon Banks on a 91-yard touchdown return Saturday night at Soldier Field. Podlesh was at practice Tuesday but did not participate.
"I am very concerned," special teams coordinator Dave Toub said. "It's a bad injury for a punter to have."
Podlesh's injury is to his left hip and that is not as concerning as it would be if it was on his right side because he kicks with his right leg. But it's still troubling and that it what led the team to bring in Matt Dodge, who punted for the Giants in 2010, for a tryout Tuesday. The plan right now is to evaluate Quigley and it would not be surprising if the Bears brought in multiple punters for tryouts next week depending on how the rookie from Boston College performs.
"This is going to be a good test for him," Toub said. "We'll see if he can handle it."
Podlesh became the first punter in franchise history to complete a season with a net average greater than 40 yards. He replaced veteran Brad Maynard, who was with the team for 10 seasons and has the third-most punts in NFL history. Maynard, 38, played for the Browns last season and had a tryout with the Eagles last month.
But if a vested veteran like Maynard is on the roster in Week 1, he can claim for termination pay if he is cut. Therefore, the Bears could be on the hook for a full season of pay to Maynard or a similarly experienced punter even if they kept him on the roster for only one or two weeks. That's an expensive short-term rental.
"We'll figure out what we need to do," Toub said.
Does Toub want Podlesh and kicker Robbie Gould trying to make plays in the open field in exhibitions?
"Yes," he said. "Adam was just competing. Next year I might (tell them not to)."

Well at first they said they weren't that concerned. At least they came out quickly with this reversal , cuz they usually don't do that.
What should you call any : Fumble , Hold , Interception , Three and out , or Sack ?
A " F.H.I.T.S " ? or a J'Marcus ?

give that rookie a chance first

Can we start teaching our punters and QBs it's better to just give up the TD than to try to tackle, themselves?

What a retarded situation. He "gets injured" just running? There was zero contact on the play. Then we are told its just a minor hip flexor muscle pull on his NON-KICKING leg. No big deal, right? couple weeks rest and all good, right?
Now, he is suddenly "seriously hurt" and we are looking for other punters...wtf? It's amazing how many key players we get "dinged up" who then become "out" for a prolonged period of time shortly thereafter.

better have them out now and healthy during the season than the other way around

They might just be being overly cautious right now but Toub doesn't often bullshit. If he's says there's some concern then I'd say there's some concern.
What's pissing me off is the number of starters or key backups who have gotten injured so far. Add in this shit with Urlacher and some days it seems to me like we can't catch a break.

I was wondering about that. I remember in College Orton had a Hip Flexer his junior or senior year, along w/another inj and they said it's a struggle just to walk w/one b/c of the pain. Now imagine trying to move put all your weight(if it's your none kicking leg) on that, or(if it's your kicking leg) trying to etend your leg all the way up w/all your force.

No kidding. Very frustrating.
We have 3 starters right now who are either doubtful or questionable for week 1: Urlacher, Conte, and Podlesh
Then we have some important ST/reserve players like DeCicco and Hardin who are also sidelined at least for the time being.
Not to mention Wooten and Paea missing time and just now practicing again. And we have only played 2 PS games so far...
