Giants dline: NFL-best 13.0 sacks through two weeks of the preseason!

Jason Pierre-Paul may not be able to play Friday, but Justin Tuck & Osi Umenyiora are as good as we'll see all season long. As Cutler says in this article, they can be devastating bull rushing OR speed rushing.

Two years ago they sacked Cutler nine times and knocked him out of their Oct. 3 game with a concussion. They then sacked backup Todd Collins one more time for an NFL-record 10 total sacks in a 17-3 win over Chicago.

There will be sacks in this game, even if our oline is better this year. I hope they get Jason Campbell in early.

    Cutler praises Giants' defensive line

The Bears' offensive line has been a point of emphasis in training camp, and the front five will get its biggest test of the preseason on Friday when they match up with the New York Giants and their vaunted defensive line.

"Those front four that they have are some of the best in the league," Jay Cutler said. "They're really long, fast, they can bull rush, they can speed rush. So it's going to be a challenge."

Two years ago the Giants sacked Cutler nine times and knocked him out of their Oct. 3 game with a concussion. They then sacked backup Todd Collins one more time for an NFL-record 10 total sacks in a 17-3 win over Chicago.

Last season, defensive ends Justin Tuck, Jason Pierre-Paul and Osi Umenyiora combined for 30.5 sacks, and the Giants finished third in the league with 48.0 sacks as a team.

And the group has picked up right where they left off last season, recording an NFL-best 13.0 sacks through two weeks of the preseason. The next closest team is Houston, with 9.0 sacks.

"I don't think anyone else in the league has five, six guys that can rotate in the front four that can play like those guys," Cutler said.

The Bears' offensive line has allowed 10.0 sacks through two games, and will have their work cut out for them Friday night. And as Cutler said, it could be a learning experience to truly gauge how far along the group is with the regular season right around the corner.

Probably right but we're working on it. Gotta have a pass rush like the Giants have and then you can destroy opponents passing games. We're gonna need to use a lot of 3 step drops come this weekend.

This may be the best pass rushing defense we face all year, even with Jason Pierre-Paul out. It will be fascinating to see:

    1) Tice's play calling for a game like this. He will have to adapt the game plan for an elite pass rush like NY has.

    2) How long will they leave Cutler in against a defense that can injure him on any given play (this is an extremely physical team that can take a QB out).

    3) Will we run the ball more? It seemed like we passed more, last game. I hope we mix it up with more run plays in this game to protect Cutler.

Either their DL is an amazing run stopping D or our OL blows at it! I'll guess it's our OL. Everytime Forte has touched the ball he's been met 2 yards behind the LoS

According to the stat sheet, Forte carried the ball six times for a grand total of four yards. The one carry that Bush had netted him only two yards. Now, I'm sure that we didn't really game plan all the much, but there was more than meets to the bad play than just offensive line. Cutler looked like a sleepwalker out there, like a zombie. He was missing easy throws that he normally makes in his sleep. Meanwhile, Chilo Rachal look horrible, and I mean HORRIBLE, out there. I didn't pay attention to when Chris Spencer was in the game, but surely to God he wasn't as bad as Rachal was. And Chris Williams? What do you say about him? He looked lost. I think it was Umenyiora who blew right by him on a missed block and nearly took out Cutler - luckily, Cutty got rid of the football before any damage was done.

The play that really disgusted me, though, was the blocked punt. I think it was you, Ric, who said that it was Unga who missed his blocking assignment. I couldn't tell through all the craziness, but if that punt had gotten off, we most likely escape the first half with no worse than a 10-7 deficit despite how poorly the defense played and despite how God-awful the offense looked.

One player on defense about whom I became concerned was Peanut. He looked fooled on at least two different place, one being that slant that he originally throught was going to be a fade or go route, while the other being that play in the end zone on which he was flagged for pass interference as he was trying to defend Barton. I don't know if this is the beginning of the end for Peanut, or if he's just having a bad game.

I've never liked the Cover-2 defense very much, and I wish that we would get a coach who thinks more like Tom Coughlin. We need to be more physical. Tice and Marinelli might have the mindset, but they haven't impressed that on me since I've been watching. Perhaps this is because of the personnel we have not being able to execute the plays properly.

I think Ric said that it was Unga who missed the blocking assignment on the blocked punt. At least from what I remember, that's what he said. You'll have to ask him.

Wow. I'd say Unga is gone. He's been on the bubble for two years.
