We're in trouble.
The 1st half, when we were going against the NY Giants starters, they looked like world champs. We looked like a steaming stinking pile of crap.
The LT's both looked like they didn't belong in the NFL. The interior olinemen were turnstyles. Cutler looked off. The run blocking was non-existent. Our defense sucked. Even our special teams looked out of sync. We were totally out-classed.
What do you DO now?
Too late to do much more with this oline. Not at this point (it's laughable to talk about the "competition" at LT and LG.....all of those guys are pitiful). Cutler can't do much with his new toys on offense without blocking. Forte is crap without blocking (did they really say we averaged 1/2 yard per carry at one point against the NY starters?...did I hear that right?) Great that we signed Forte, but what good is he without an oline?
I feel sick.

I didn't see the game, but did read the game thread. Sounds like our worst case scenario. The OL is not able to handle a real football team. This means we probably won't get very far in the post season - assuming we get there to begin with.
We brought in all this firepower and we can't use it against a team that puts on pressure (ie a good team).
Well, thanks Tice. I guess we won't be "just fine" on the OL. That was the acid test and apparently we failed it. Looks like we are going to have to go another year or two before we can really challenge for a SB. Problem is, I really think the window may have closed on Urlacher now and Briggs maybe in another year. Sounds like a real mess.

It's amazing Forte had any positive yards; he was always hit 2-3 yards in the back field. It as pitifull. Once NY knew we couldn't run the passing game just shut down and the game was over.
CWill has to be moved back to LG, Spencer cannot handle it, for whatever reason. You cannot put carimi in the same position you did CWill by constantly moving him around. You're stuck by default w/Webb(Omyfail 2.0) at LT until next year and hopefully James Brown can stepup and take it.

I would think the first thing to do now would be to accept that these experiments, castoffs, half-measures, and schemes aren't going to take us to the promised land. Jay isn't going to have either the time nor the health to use his shiny new toys. A scaling back may be in order at least for now.
On defense I know Paea wasn't in there but he alone isn't going to help the run D. Jennings and Peanut got exposed. Yes I know its PS and vanilla plays are called but I'm sure Rod has to scheme for the loss of BU. Any more scheming to minimum weaknesses and it will be exposed.
Honestly, I'm not worried about ST as that is the way of the beast in the PS.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

We were totally out-classed tonight. Offense, defense & special teams sucked.
I can just hear Lovie now crowing about how we "won" the game. We didn't win crap. Our scrubs came back on their scrubs. Meaningless, because our STARTERS looked like scrubs.

Ric, that was one of the worst performances I've seen the Bears play. Holy cow. We looked like boys against men. If it had been a boxing match they would have had to stop it because we were helpless out there and they were knocking the snot out of us. Did Manning miss ANY passes that first half? Any?

It is preseason and one thing I know about the bears is that the game was meaingless and we never play well. When we have all of our starters out on the field we will play much better and all parts of the game will come into sync. Remember, Lovie plays a boring ass preseason games and our players still need time to gel and the Captain of the defense will be back.

You are right about Lovie & pre-season games. And the Bears will fix the ST's problems. The defense will be ok (man, we NEED Urlacher badly & for him to play the entire season healthy).
But that offensive line though is really bad. It's more than a LT problem. The pitiful thing is that Cutler & Forte won't be much use to us if the oline can't block. I don't know how much gelling they can do in two weeks.....gettin' pretty close to our regular season now. I don't know man. Those oline guys looked like something you'd like to flush down the toilet (ugly and stinking).
I'm usually a very positive guy here. You guys know me by my posts, that it takes a lot for me to despair. But I really think we're in trouble if the oline is this bad.

Gentlemen, there were positives that came out of this game, if but only one or a few. One was that the first team offense came out in the second half and improved over what it did in the first half. I didn't watch the game in the second half as I was disgusted at what I witnessed after the blocked punt, but Cutler did manage to pass for what, 96-something yards on 9 of 21 passing attempts -- certainly not great by any means, but it did pick up in the second half? I think Forte even got like 39 yards on 10 carries, which is just a hair shy of 4.0 yards a carry. That's not that bad against a defense like the New York Giants. And, if you take away that punt block that the G-men had against Quigley, we go into halftime only down 10-7 and no worse than 13-7 despite how poorly our defense guarded the pass. That being said, the first unit defense actually did guard fairly decently against the run with the exception of that David Wilson fellow, who busted us for two long runs. If one remembers, we gave up a couple of big runs against Washington in Preseason Game #2, but then settled down. I suspect that once Urlacher is back and healthy, most of those big runs up the middle will be stuffed.
I'll agree with you, JABF99, though. That left side of the offensive line looks God awful. I don't know what else Mike Tice can do to improve the line unless we pick up a quality veteran presence off of waivers. The good news is that as I understand, both Bushrod and Long will be available during free agency next year. That is something we need to definitely take a very close look at. We also could look into drafting a G in the second round to replace the dead weight we have in Spencer and Rachal. I frankly don't understand why we don't plug in Edwin Williams at LG because he played relatively well there last season when Chris Williams went down. Tice is going to have to seriously consider putting Chris Williams back at LG because he was at his best when he played there the past two season. He could pull, run block well, and he was a pretty serviceable pass protector. Basically, Chris Williams the left guard has been our best offensive lineman along with Roberto Garza over the past two seasons. Outside of that, I don't know what more we can do about LT. Webb is just going to have to munch down on some more tacos for us for another season. Thanks to Tice (I say this dripping in sarcasm), we have arguably the worst offensive tackle in the entire NFL, as well as the two worst offensive guards in the league in Spencer and Rachal. I can't believe that Emery was serious when he signed Rachal. I guess this is where bad linemen go to show off how pathetic they are.
