Where do we go from here with this pitiful oline?

My thinking is that even if we could find a castoff from another team's cuts this week, he'd know nothing about our offense, and it would take time to get him up-to-speed with our oline members. But maybe my mid season or so he'd be decent (something we don't have with our present group).

Watching our starters last night it was crystal clear that:

    1) Webb is bad.

    2) C.Will is worse.

    3) Both Rachal AND Spencer are pitiful LG's. They were DOMINATED last night. At one point our running game was averaging 1/2 per carry. Yes, that's 18 INCHES per carry. Forte had defenders on him in the backfield.

    4) Cariimi looks like he can become a decent RT. Lance Louis didn't look as bad as the left side players, but certainly nothing to write home about.l

    5) Garza looks like crap last night. I don't know WHAT that was all about. The interior linemen couldn't run block, and the pass blocking wasn't that much better (actually, on pass blocking, our LT's looked better than our interior linemen - and THAT'S bad).

Guys, this isn't a "gelling" or "pixie dust" need. You are not going to fix this with 3 step drops (you gotta be able to run the ball better than an 18 inch per carry average in the NFL).

We simply don't have the talent.

I just looked up the official stats for Forte/Bush in the first half (our starters against theirs). That comes out to 2 FEET per carry. Not 2 yards. That's 24 stinking INCHES per carry.

Lotta good it did to sign Forte, and add Bush - this THIS offensive line to run behind. We could have saved some money and added any Soldier Field beer vendor as our RB and got 24 inches per carry.
    Go Bears!

Well I said it in the offseason we spend cap space foolishly instead of adding a guy like nicks or Grubbs and we are seeing the effects of that. Also drafting a situational pass rusher instead of oline sure looks like its going to help the oline

First - I didn't see the game, but from reading this article it seems like they didn't allow any sacks? From reading the game thread, it seemed the OL was horrible, but when I read this article it seems they did well.

Is Webb back to his alternate food reality?

J’Marcus Webb likely secures Bears starting LT job

Getty Images J’Marcus Webb got some rest Friday, had a good meal.
And the whole no sacks and locking up a starting job didn’t hurt, either.
The Bears left tackle had a solid night, and while they haven’t made an official declaration, it seems he has a starting job secured, something he’d still like to hear.
The Bears first offensive line, long a trouble spot, didn’t allow a sack of Jay Cutler in a 20-17 win over the Giants.
“I got a good nap in, and I’m feeling pretty good now,” Webb said after the game, via Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times. “I have to look at the film, and in addition to the chicken, the shrimp and the pasta [I ate], it really made it a good night.
“Man, that pasta was . . . nah, I’m kidding. I would like some resolution, but you know, that’s not up to me. I feel like I keep working hard and playing the way I’m playing, and everything will work out on its own.”
Webb has been involved in a competition with former first-rounder Chris Williams, but seems to have distanced himself in the preseason, and a clean sheet against one of the best lines in the game helped.
“[No sacks] was definitely a good sign,” Webb said. “You definitely want to move the ball up and down the field, work as a unit that feels good and strong, and then come out with the win.
“I think we did a solid job, but just got to look at the film. Can’t give you anymore than that right now.”
Along with a nap and a good meal, it’s hard to ask for any more than that.

Cutler avoided sacks by getting rid of the ball too fast. His passing suffered as a result.

The running game (our starters against their starters) ended up horrific. Forte and Bush (against the starters) averaged about 24 inches per carry (you read that right -- they averaged two stinking FEET per carry.....less than 1 yard per carry).

It was clear that we don't have the talent at offensive line to gel anything other than a stinking, steaming pile of crap.

Well, we always knew that not having upgraded the line that this was going to be one of the possible scenarios. We were betting on a change of scheme from Martz, but I think that Tice more than negated that with is musical linemen

    Exactly.

At some point you realize that we either have NFL-level talent. Or we don't. Other than Carimi, we don't.

Jay needs to run backwards 10 yards and then throw the ball to brandon Marshall. It doesn't have to be a good pass because Marshall just has great hands.

So where do we go with this o-line? to the season. In the famous words of Dick Cheney "You go to war with the army you have". Of course that's true for a retaliatory war, but that ignores the thousands of years of human history of preparations for an invasion, just like Lovie seems to be doing. I really can't blame Emery for this mess. He inherited a team with no depth and weak skill positions. He has done an amazing job so far, IMO. This will take a few years to fix, and unfortunately, BU's window is closing. The door may be slammed shut on him after next year. But the team will go on, and with Emery instead of Angelo, I think we'll be fine. This year? Hopefully Tice is smart enough to make it workable.

Shark, that's a good post, and that's what will happen. This mess isn't Emery's fault. Jerry Angelo left us with a lot of mediocre talent, and pure bad talent in places. Emery IMHO, did a fantastic job getting the team upgraded as best you can in one off season. They gambled that Tice could make this oline "good enough" for the team to be decent this year. Just to buy time for Emery to fix the oline right, next year.

But clearly, the oline looks worse than last year.

How THIS happened, I have no clue. Spencer looks bad. Web & C.Will are REALLY bad. Louis is maginal (he'd be a good backup), and even Garza looks worse this year. Carimi is our only bright spot. We need to have Emery build the oline from scratch, around Carimi. Ship the other bums out of here.
    Go Bears!
