All potentially very true. In a sense Tice is between the rock and a hard place as far as that left side of the line goes. His options are slim and none and slim keeps getting slimmer by the minute. If there isn't
a serviceable vet OT released by someone who we can sign then slim goes anorexic and we get to start the year with Spencer at LG and CWill playing swing OT.
I don't know what to think anymore. I see the need for a vet OT to back Webb and Carimi. That's not an option. It's a necessity if we plan on keeping chaos to a minimum if one is injured or Webb screws up so badly that he loses his spot and suddenly gets hired as the poster boy for McDonalds or Taco Bell. We can't afford another deal like we did when we had to move OMG into that starting RT spot and right now if all we had as an option was James Brown I'm afraid that's about what we'd get. He's not ready to start yet. Not even close.
Thinking about it as positively as I can, after a few starts, Spencer did adapt to RG fairly well last year and playing there his pass blocking was actually one of his strong points. There seem to be conflicting opinions but Brad Biggs, who follows the team as closely as anyone, says he's been OK. Consistent was the term I think he used. All we can really hope for is that with a few more starts he and Webb will get it together over there and begin to play well enough to survive to start with and progress as the season goes on. What other choice is there?
The woulda, shoulda, coulda time is past. It's now become the didn't. So just structure the line with best five starters and the best three backups we've got and work the hell out of all of them. No one ever said that changes couldn't be made if it doesn't work out but for now these guys need to know where they're gonna be playing and who starts and who sits. After that's been done the competition can continue weekly from now until January. Nobody on that line should feel so secure that their job isn't in jeopardy week in and week out.
Maybe we are lacking as far as the best starting talent goes but we do have some advantage in that whoever plays backup will be a vet with his own NFL starting experience so should an injury happen the next guy in line should be able to step in with no real loss in efficiency. I guess that's one benefit of having a deep but very mediocre bunch of lineman.
