Mike Tice blames overemphasizing pass for Bears' run blocking woes

It had nothing to do with a lack of talent. Possibly aliens were involved!
(Webb blames lack of Webb Nation t-shirt sales & too few Big Macs before the game):

    Mike Tice blames overemphasizing pass
    for Bears' run blocking woes

    By Gene Chamberlain | CBSSports.com

Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith always says his team gets off the bus running, but in preseason the Bears have merely been running in place.

Offensive coordinator Mike Tice Sunday blamed that problem with the running attack simply on a lack of practice blocking the run.

"We'll run the ball fine," Tice said. "We just have to pay more attention to it in our individual work.

"We've focused so much on making sure that we're able to protect our quarterbacks that we've taken some of that time that we usually work on in those individual periods and focused on the protection stuff. We just have to, in these next 10 days or whatever, spend more time honing up some of those things."

Against the Giants' first team in the first half Friday, Bears running backs netted 6 yards on nine rushes. In the first preseason game against Denver, the backs had 6 yards on seven carries in the first half against Denver first- and second-teamers.

The only respectable effort came against Washington when backs gained 43 yards on 11 first-half carries.
"I think we need to decide on what runs we want to really focus on this next week and get after those and clean up those and move forward and make some strides in our run game," Tice said. At least the pass blocking encouraged Tice.

Gradually the Bears line has improved in this area since the first game.

"No sacks," he said. "I didn't see a ton of pressure. We were edgy a few times, but nothing that makes you start to worry about where we're at right now."

Tackle Chris Williams calls it understandable that the run blocking hasn't been there from the start due to the emphasis on the pass.

"There are so many moving parts to any part of football," he said. "In the run game, one guy's off, it's not a good run. We just had a lot of that. It'll clean itself up. I'm not worried about it."

The left tackle battle between Williams and J'Marcus Webb remains on for now, as coaches hadn't made a decision on Sunday as to whether they'd call a winner yet or who would play against Cleveland in Thursday's preseason finale and for how long.

Williams has obviously been behind Webb because he's taken fewer first-team snaps. Williams had one embarassing play against the Giants when DE Osi Umenyiora seemed to get around him before he got out of his stance.

Williams doesn't necessarily see his job as being in jeopardy, although it wouldn't be shocking if the loser of the left tackle battle got cut if an experienced left tackle came available when other teams make roster cuts.
"I feel like I've got a spot on the roster," Williams said. "But you never know until the last day's up I guess."

So you learn to throw a uppercut so much that you unlearned your jab riiight. GMAFB Tice, run blocking is fundamental and foundational. Plus your playing freaking VANILLA how much more paint by numbers can you get and still forget?

Remember his past press release after the first game when they didn't run it very well and he said that they were now moving onto pass protection? I thought that was strange since they didn't really do well in opening holes. So now he says that they can't run because they were focused on the pass.

Let me think who might have made that decision..... hmmmmm.... almost got it..... I'm seeing pictures of a meatloaf.... no Webb just ate that...

No, it was a meathead, not a meatloaf. Threw me off. It was close.

ok, so now does he eliminate training on pass protection and move back to the run? Here is an idea.... The guys need to be able to do both. Maybe work on both UNTIL they have one down, and THEN focus on the other. In the meantime, work on both.

Tice understands that you don't have to block well to have a great offensive line.

It's a paradox. Webb is the guru. He understands the Zen of how the correct pasta with shrimp (followed up with Web Nation t-shirt sales) results in good karma. Lovie explains it perfectly when you wake him from his nap. He simply says "Rex is our quarterback"...

Solid run & pass blocking? It's meaningless.

God, I miss Meathead the bot that used to be a resident member of the site years ago. He used to keep me entertained with his funny quips and one liners, none of which made any sense.

Sounds like he was an accurate representation.

Well it's a logical if not totally reasonable explanation so the only question that remains is that if that's what he believes is the root cause what are you gonna do about it. He says what he intends to do about it so all we can do is wait and see if it works.

You can't really fault him for his initial approach to it. Run blocking wasn't the problem last year. Pass blocking was. I still don't know how you can get anything serious accomplished with half your line still "under construction" though.

Of course moving your best run blocking OG out of his spot and using him as a horse whip for your underachieving LT probably didn't help much either Mike. Just get your starters set right now OK? Then work on the timing and blocking schemes you want to use.

I don't think there's a single area of this team that's been handled anywhere near as poorly as this line situation has so far. It's been an abortion. Just poor, poor, and very poor decision making all the way around. Maybe Tice bit off more than he could chew trying to coach both the entire offense and the line simultaneously. Didn't we go through this once before when Lovie attempted to coach the LB's after he made Babich his DC?

I think we had a pretty good chance of improving the line if he'd have just started where we left off last year but this is another example of a Bears coach outsmarting himself. You can't expect outstanding play from guys who don't know there position well enough to play it or even know if that's the position they'll be playing.

Poorly handled Mike. Very poorly handled.

Our season is in the hands of the finest LT ever to walk the earth. Tice sleeps well at night knowing Webb Nation is on duty!

Yeah but Soul, we aren't playing last year. After the first preseason game, the run game WAS a problem and his response is that we are ready to move onto pass protection. Based on what? Last year? I thought you made adjustments based on what you see today? That is what you have to work with and respond to. He moved people around so what they did last year was not what he could necessarily expect this year. An OL coach of all people should know that when you move people around on the OL that it is a different and new day.

I agree that it was handled very poorly. I can't believe my going back and forth on Tice like this. When he was with the Vikings, I thought he was an idiot. Up until he married Webb, I actually thought he was a damned good OL coach. Now I think I was right the first time.

I can't do much about the OL, but I sure as hell can make money off of this. I'm buying all the Taco Bell stock I can come the opening bell
