    Davis loses out to Sanzenbacher in roster battle

    The competition between Rashied Davis and Dane Sanzenbacher for a spot on the Chicago Bears' 53-man roster has ended: Davis told the Tribune he was released Wednesday morning.
    The Bears had not announced the move, but Davis suffered an undisclosed injury and did not practice Tuesday.

    With Brandon Marshall, Devin Hester, Earl Bennett, Alshon Jeffery, and Eric Weems locks to make the roster, it appeared to come down to Sanzenbacher or Davis for that sixth receiver spot.
    Davis, who was signed late during training camp, had experience on his side in terms of his previous play on special teams, but Sanzenbacher showed great progress on special teams throughout the preseason. Not to mention quarterback Jay Cutler has publicly lobbied for Sanzenbacher to stick.

    Sanzenbacher, a former undrafted player from Ohio State, caught 27 passes for 276 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie last season.

    The 33-year-old Davis, who played for the Detroit Lions last season, felt he was a little behind after joining the team late. He also was accustomed to playing the slot on offense and only lined up outside in the previous exhibition games.

    The Bears have to shave their roster to 53 Friday evening, and their roster would stand at 74 after the Davis move is announced.

    The Bears started Week 1 of last season with six receivers on the 53-man roster and one other on the practice squad.

    This was such a no-brainer for the Bears. I would have been bitterly disappointed if R. Davis had made our roster. Nothing against the guy. I wish him the best. But if HE is the best we can do here on the Bears, then something is horribly wrong.

    Even if Davis was just a bit better than Sanz I'd have taken Sanz over Davis. He is a young player and he might turn out to be something big imo..

    Vaugn McClure reports that Davis suffered an inj and couldn't practice yesterday. Appears that would be the reason. Go fig a mid 30's lil wr suffered an inj.

    Made my day too. Kinda sad though that we have to cross our fingers and hope on some of this which seems a no-brainer.

    Don't care the reason, just happy w/the final result.

    There were reports that he was on the bubble to begin with. So it's possible this is the reason they were looking for.

    The only reason I didn't blow a gasket when they re-acquired Rashied was because we already addressed the WR position with Marshall and Jeffrey. At any rate, I'm with Ricza, not sad to see him go... remember when he was the number 3 guy in the receiving corps? *shudder*
