Henry Melton Wants to be "The Man" on the Bears Defense.....

Henry Melton wants to be ‘the man’ on Bears’ defense

Bears defensive tackle Henry Melton doesn’t need anyone critiquing him because he is very critical of himself.

“I always grade myself very hard and I want to be consistent, and at times last year I wasn’t,” Melton said. “I’m trying to be more consistent and really be the man for the defense.”

In his first full season as a starter in 2011, Melton finished with seven sacks, tied for third-most among NFL defensive tackles. Two of them came in the opener, and another came two weeks later. He then went five games in a row without a sack before tallying four during a five-week stretch. He went sack-less in the final three games.

Asked if he got tired as the season progressed, Melton said, “Not really. It’s just the season. Mentally and physically, you’re going to get tired. I finished OK but definitely could have been better.”

Melton noted that he split a lot of repetitions with Amobi Okoye, the former first-round pick of the Houston Texans who played last season with the Bears. During the offseason, Okoye signed as a free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Of the Bears’ 1,007 defensive plays last season, Melton was on the field for 621 of them, 57.5 percent. Okoye played 593 snaps, 54.9 percent. “People felt I disappeared sometimes, but I wasn’t playing as many snaps as people thought,” Melton said.

At 295 pounds, Melton certainly isn’t the biggest defensive tackle, and the Bears were mindful of not wearing him out last season. But with Okoye gone, Melton might play more this season. That’s why he focused on his conditioning this offseason. “Because I felt I’d have a bigger role this year,” he said.

Melton’s backup is Nate Collins, who will miss the first game because of a suspension.

Melton performed well last season, but he has another great motivator this year: His contract, which will pay him $565,000 this season, is set to expire after the season.

“It’s always out there, and you want to set yourself up and your family,” said Melton, who is single but noted that he wants to help his mother and sister. “You’re always working toward making sure they’re going to be good. But you can’t think about that too much.”

Surely, though, Melton hasn’t missed some of the monstrous deals signed by players at his position, such as the Baltimore Ravens’ Haloti Ngata, who signed a five-year deal worth $61 million.

Melton, 25, doesn’t get too ahead of himself. He started his collegiate career at Texas as a running back, and he was a fourth-round pick of the Bears in 2009.

“Every day is just a blessing, especially where I started,” Melton said. “It’s been a long journey, but I’m still young.”

Heading into the season, defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli is pleased with Melton. “He’s made explosive plays for us,” Marinelli said. “But we want to see them again. He’s had a good, solid camp. And I like solid.”

I think we all recognize that stellar play from the DT position in this defense is the difference between opposing teams having the time to carve up the secondary and having eyes the size of saucers as they approach the line of scrimmage to snap the ball.

I want Melton to be the man too.

Well if he want to be "The Man" it's all right there for the taking. With other defensive line leaders like Pep and Izzy approaching the ends of their careers there's no time like the present for a new one to step forward. If he puts the effort into he can certainly be that guy.

A couple of things worth noting here as well.

    1) If Nate Collins is on the depth chart as his #2 then that surely means Brian Price is either listed as a NT or, like Paea, he could be used at either DT spot. Because Collins will be out for the Indy game and Paea still isn't 100%, and may not be for another month, I'd say that gives Price a pretty good shot at making the team. At least for now.

    2) If Melton does elevate his play enough to get some consideration for post season honors then if we use the deal Ngata got as a yardstick Melton won't be cheap to extend. This is another one of those cases where I have to wonder how the Bears will approach this. Will Emery play this like Angelo used to and get him extended before the year is over and possibly save himself millions by acting before the guy hits his peak or will he take a "wait and see" approach?

To me this could be one of the more interesting contract pursuits coming up since we don't know as much about Emery's style of doing things yet. Melton still has a lot to prove and this will only be his second year starting at DT but you can see that the potential to be a great one is there. This is one guy I'm gonna be following pretty closely this year.

Melton needs to worry about being the man for more then 1 or 2 games this year. All but 2 of his sacks came in Game 1 against an OL that was completely desimated from Inj; and he hasn't proven to be a great run stuffer either.

Basically he was a rookie or at the most a second year DT last year. I'll take those seven sacks out of a guy with that little time on the job as a good start. Yeah he needs to get better at making the play when he shoots gaps. That's where his run stopping skills suffered. He wasn't getting blocked as often as he was simply running himself out of plays.

He's still got a ways to go to be a great all around DT. Marnelli called his play in camp and preseason "solid". That's a good term for a guy with journeyman skills but not so good for a guy who want to be "The Man". Dominating is a term I'd be looking for and Henry isn't dominating yet. But he could. He's got the upside to do it so now it's up to him.

Soul, I'm not down on him; just not nearly as high as you are. He got 4 sacks against guys that should have been PS material b/c of the OL issues that 1st game.
My point is the one you just stated, he's got a long way to go. Stop worrying about being the man, and just get better and more consistant.

Well he only had 2 sacks but I understand your point completely. He needs to show up and step up versus higher level of competition. He has the tools, hopefully he continues to progress and tears it up even more this year. I'll take consistent pressure over inflated sack numbers.

my concern about him is he lost his starting job cause even the HEAD COACH------not us posters--------saw him bullshitting and used that to light a fire under him. He loses focus or else that wouldnt happen. He has to take his job seriously especially in a contract year.

we had another player a few years back with the same problems-anyone remember tommie harris?
