Vikings work out 6'5" Chris Summers

He'll be picked up by an NFL team as a project, and developed into a weapon. He has Brandon Marshall's speed but is taller. I just hope he doesn't land in our division. AT least he's not going to be a threat this season.

HOUSTON -- Leslie Frazier suggested on Tuesday the Minnesota Vikings might look outside the organization for help at receiver. Apparently, that process is already underway.

An NFL source confirmed on Thursday the Vikings recently worked out Chris Summers, who was waived by the Chicago Bears on Sunday.

Summers, 23, is a big body (6-foot-5, 213 pounds) and had 188 catches for 2,712 yards (14.4 average) and 26 touchdowns in four seasons at Liberty.

    He broke current Vikings receiver
Jerome Simpson's Big South Conference record with 1,081 receiving yards in 2010.

A Jacksonville, Fla., native, Summers went undrafted in April, then signed with the Bears shortly thereafter. He had three receptions, including gains of 28 and 24 yards, in Chicago's first two preseason games before he was cut.

guys we knew that we weren't going to get everyone. We knew this year was going to be a time when other teams snagged quality players. Summers(crazy to think) wasn't good enough to make this WR squad, how awesome is that to get to say about the Bears!

And clearly Summers is a project. To stick with the Bears he'd have to have been a stellar ST's player.

And that's why they didn't keep him. He hasn't made anyone's roster yet. He's got size and speed but he's also raw. The best he might expect is to be somebody's #4 or #5 guy and at this point in time if the Vikes cut him we can still pick him up and put him on our PS.

This is one of the reasons I'd line to see the NFL develop a minor league system of teams where the NFL teams could option players like Summers and still hold their rights. They don't even need one for each team. An 8-12 teams league would do it with 3 or 4 NFL teams being affiliated with one minor league team and it would be there optioned players who staff those rosters along with others who aren't under a minor league contract with any one team.

    I'm with ya Soul.

It is surprising that some truer form of minor league system has not been put into place already. Canadian, Europe, and Arena leagues have managed to hang around and snag up college players... The NFL Network even televises quite a bit.

JABF99 brought it up a while ago, when posting about the number of preseasons games. People can bitch all they want, but with cutting down a 90 limit roster to 53, NFL teams need all four scrimmage games. Set up a better development league, and I'd be all for cutting back or eliminating them all together depending on the depth of the system established.

That was what the euro league was for, but the league decided it didn't like putting money into developing guys.....

The Euro league never got the overall support it needed from the NFL or fans overseas.

I'm talking about farm teams here in the good old USA or possibly in Canada where there will be enough fan support to sustain those operations. The Euro thing was done primarily to expand the NFL's broadcast markets not for the purpose of developing players Ric. What I'm talking about is different.

Put teams near major markets that already support NFL football or would love to have a franchise, like Toronto, but won't get one in the foreseeable future. Those markets will support those teams financially and the cost of operations should be far less than it was to sponsor the Euro league. The NFL gambled there and miscalculated how popular their product would be.

Won't work well here in US either, b/c NFL fans look at college as the farm system. Canada might work, but the Euro thing was a good idea b/c it was a neutral audiance that didnt follow College or NFL.

but the NFL cannot look at it as a money making venture, it won't be. Like the WNBA, the NBA is losing money on that, but they keep it around for good PR and tax write offs, not for profit.
