Clutts making the most of a long look at FB - executed strong blocks

I thought Tyler Clutts put on a clinic last night. All night long he sprung the RB's with huge blocks. He caught the ball well too. The guy is a blocking stud. He also got work as a long snapper, and of course on ST's.

In the 2nd quarter, the Browns strong side LB was injured when he tried to tackle Clutts. Tyler is a load trying to tackle.

An intriguing look to the first half of the Bears-Browns game was the extensive use of Tyler Clutts at fullback, working as a lead blocker as he did with great success for Forte last season.

Coordinator Mike Tice prefers a one-back offense and the Bears have been expected to carry four tight ends – Kellen Davis, Kyle Adams, Matt Spaeth and rookie Evan Rodriguez. Davis and Adams project as locks, and Rodriguez is the team’s 2012 fourth-round draft choice and developing well through camp and preseason.

But Clutts appeared to be playing himself into real consideration for a spot that seemed a longshot just a couple weeks ago.

Spaeth is a good blocker but more expensive than Adams and Rodriguez. Clutts is a contributor on special teams, including serving as the backup long snapper.

Clutts worked into a variety of roles in the backfield, where Spaeth is arguably not as effective. Clutts executed strong blocks for both Armando Allen and Lorenzo Booker, and also was out in short passing routes.

Bradd Briggs just tweeted that Caplan is reporting that the Bears have already waived Clutts. Apparently last night was a night to showcase Clutts so he can get on another team. :badmood:

I figured as much. The first time I watch the Bears fail to punch the ball into the end zone when we have the ball on the goal line (one of those "1st and a few yards to go" situations, I'm going to throw up. This oline isn't going to get it done in those situations. And our TE's are nothing to write home about as blockers either (including Spaeth).

Cutting Tyler Clutts is taking TD's off the board for 2012, in my humble opinion. A lot more field goals instead of TD's will be the result.

JABF, to be fair, those two HB's Rodriguez and the other(cannot think of his name) you haven't seen in the pre season games how they will be used. You don't know that they will be worse or better and throwing those blocks. But again, this is the same as last year w/Olsen and Devin Amarashoooo w/Martz, he liked big fat blocking TE's and tiny fast wr's; so those guys never stood a chance. Tice doesn't like FB's, he like TE and HB's.

Man, I just hate getting rid of "good football players" because they don't fit in with the scheme that the "coordinator of the month" wants to run. Sometimes, you modify your scheme to something that works well with good players. None of these H-Back tight ends look like they can lead block anything like Clutts. I'm not saying Clutts is a "star", he's far from it, but he has done well when given the opportunity to play. We gave up a top level TE last year because the OC at the time didn't like Tight ends, now THIS OC DOES use a TE and we have a mish mash of "hopefulls". Not real happy about the way this works. If the Bears don't make the playoffs and have a subpar year, there is a good chance that THIS OC will be gone with a house cleaning. Then we'll bring in an old school guy who likes both Tight Ends and Full Backs. :badmood:

I get it Ric. And we all knew that Tice doesn't like FB's in his offense. Tice is also pleased with this oline (and didn't feel we needed to bring anyone in this year in the draft at those positions). This will be his 3rd year of being the "oline guru" for the Bears.

Me? Under Tice, I've seen some of the worst blocking from the Bears that I can remember. I've also seen some of the worst oline talent. But hey, what do I know. Tice is the man. If he says it's a good oline, then what do I know?

When I was watching Clutts blocking, it was like we finally had 1 guy who was stellar at blocking. He's as good as I've seen in many years. Watching him block for Bush's TD in that earlier game - made me realize that the Bush/Clutts combo would FINALLY make us studs in the red zone.....certainly those 1st and goal situations were NOW going to be TD's instead of the many FG's we settled for in the past.

We leave WAY too many points on the field. A big part of that is that our oline is overpowered in those goal line situations. We get no surge. Nothing. Our TE's couldn't block my grandma - and that includes Spaeth.

Clutts could have changed all of that. Especially in combo with Bush.

When we begin leaving points on the field again THIS season, I'm going to have to restrain myself from throwing a chair through the TV. Because we had the man who could have changed this. And we cut him.

p.s. At the end of the season, lets see how many points Adams is responsible for. I'll bet a big fat zero. As in "none"....

no disagreement here JABF. But remember that some of that blocking improved greatly when Martz's O plan was reduced. I do think this team is over valuing Tice, but it's Smith's last shot so I don't think they were getting into another OC quaqmire like they did last time that Martz got hired.

If we don't make the playoffs this year, due to a crap oline and crap blocking, I believe Lovie and his coaches will be swept out the door. They'll throw out Tice along with his crappy box of pixie dust that never worked too.

But we can all be happy with the thought that we kept the mighty Adams in Tice's offense. Who needs blocking when you can have the mighty Adams on your team?

The Chicago Bears have begun the process of trimming the roster to the 53-man limit. Fullback Tyler Clutts, who was added just before Week 1 a year ago, will be placed on waivers, according to Adam Caplan of thesidelineview.com. Clutts played a little more than 30 percent of the time on offense last season when the Bears rushed for 2,000 yards for the first time since 1990.
The move is not a surprise as offensive coordinator Mike Tice prefers to use tight ends because he believes they are more versatile. Clutts’ playing time dropped significantly during the spring and training camp and he barely played in preseason until the exhibition finale Thursday night in Cleveland.
Clutts’ departure is a strong signal the Bears will elect to keep four tight ends on the roster – Kellen Davis, Matt Spaeth, Evan Rodriguez and Kyle Adams.

Having a great blocker in the backfield somewhat mitigated our oline woes (a bit). I'm not claiming to be a smart football mind. But over the years there have been countless times where the Bears made a move like this, that I thought would come back to bite them on the butt. Most of us here have seen these moves over the years, and thought they were mistakes at the time.

And you know what? Most of the time they DID come back to hurt us. Why is it the fans can see these as bonehead moves, yet the Chicago Bears coaches can't? This isn't just a Lovie Smith thing. It goes back many years. You scratch your head and wonder "why would they DO that?"....then the coaches come and go. The fans remain.

Here we had one guy who could help us fix part of our blocking woes. We cut him to keep a 4th TE. I get it that he'll be an H-back. They can call him anything they want (Tice's Grand Master Save the Universe Back).

But he won't have the impact on our team that Clutts would have had.

Oh, well.

So it goes with the Chicago Bears. Who needs good blockers?
