Amobi Okoye is about to be back with the Bears.
The defensive lineman was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and he’s finalizing a deal to return to the Bears, according to a league source.
A former 10th overall pick, Okoye posted his second-best sack total last season as a Bears reserve, and he signed a one-year, $1.3 million contract with the Bucs during the offseason.
But, Okoye underwent a knee scope in June, and he missed the last three preseason games.
Bucs rookie head coach Greg Schiano apparently lost patience with Okoye, despite trouble with the team’s depth on the defensive line.
“You can be a little cautious at times,” Schiano said of Okoye, according to the Tampa Times Thursday night. “We’ve tried to do that. But at the end of the day, you’ve got to go out and earn a spot.”
Recently, Schiano also acknowledged that the Bucs took a risk with Okoye because of his “history with that knee.”
The Bears have had a host of injuries themselves along the defensive line.
Matt Toeaina entered training camp with a cast, and Stephen Paea missed the final three preseason games with an ankle injury. On Thursday night, Brian Price - whom the Bears traded a seventh-round pick to the Bucs to get - left the game early and underwent tests to evaluate whether he had a head injury.
Nate Collins has flashed at times, but he’ll be suspended for the first game of the season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
The only completely healthy defensive tackle is Henry Melton

and this is why we let another team sign him for WAY to much money.

Actually is was $1.8 mil that he got offered by TB. He got about $1.3 mil from the Bears last year and my guess is that the Bears weren't willing to go beyond that amount by much if at all. He got a $200k workout bonus from them too so $2 mil total was his deal. Now maybe we get him for even less than we paid him last year.

What I'm getting a chuckle over is how TB is helping us add some nice youth and depth to our defense letting all these guys from their old Cover-2 system go since Schiano came through the door. We should thank him.

First it was Hayes, then Price and now Okoye is returning too. Man we got a log jam going on at DT now for sure. I wonder if Price got a serious concussion? I remember seeing his helmet get knocked off on one play but I don't recall if that was the one he was hurt on or not. Should be interesting to see what comes from all of this.

I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

We are a regular three ring circus with our cuts, signings, trades and resigns.

I think people would have been ok trading Clutts for a capable OL, but I don't even think the guy we got for him is all that good. ANd I thought Clutts was damn good.

Last guy we got from houston was considered a bust; Okoye, and look what he turned out to be. Some players are more a product of the system then great players. Okoye was one, maybe this guy will be also.

I fucking love how we went from thinking Tice would save this group to oh we cut a FB that hardly played last year to oh he doesn't know what the hell he's thinking.

Reallity check, Clutts didn't play that much last year, he wasn't an everydown O player. He wasn't the reason the O was good last year, nor will he be a reason the O was good this year.

I liked Clutts, I wanted us to keep him; but the over reasction of cutting Clutts is getting to be a bit embarassing. Better hurry up and resign McCown and Allen b/c apparently all our Qb's and RB's are gonna get hurt b/c Clutts is no longer on the team. Might as well trade away Marshal and Jeffery b/c they won't matter b/c Clutts won't be back there blocking for Cutler.....Holy crap get a hold of yourselves!

You need to be the Bears GM if you could manage to trade a FB for a capable OL.

Well, you have a point there. But it could be the beginning of a trade with maybe a pick included.
