I think this is a good point. Olin Kruetz made a comment one time about him that he had the makings of a good LT but as 99 says we never seem to be content with a guy who can only do ONE thing well. Lovie IS enamored of guys with the athleticism to fill multiple roles and Tice talks about not looking for OGs but rather OTs who can play OG.

I'm beginning to think that one of the major reasons we struggle putting a good OLine on the field is that we don't and never have gone about it in the right way. We draft or sign guys who aren't capable of what's expected of them and this OT to OG approach is just one example.

The requirements of the two positions is completely different and so is the ideal body type and basic physical demands. We get rid or a "bulldozer" type like Ricky Henry who is a guy who can move his man off the ball but we keep a guy with more athleticism who can't. If you run a zone blocking system with a cutback style runner this will work. The Broncos made 1000 yard per year RBs out of late round draft picks and UDFA with that system. But you won't be able to run a power running game behind that line and you won't protect a pocket style passer either. You need a mobile QB who can move and roll out.

That's why there was no way we could run Martz offense behind that line. It's also the reason we do poorly running the ball on the third and short and/or goaline running plays. You don't ask a finesse blocking line to power block between the tackles or pass block for 7 step drops. That line isn't built for that. It's like trying to hammer a nail with a screwdriver.

The funny thing is I thought Tice wanted a power blocking line but based on this roster that's not really what he has. Guys are being asked to play lighter, not heavier. His starting OGs will average right around 305-310lbs not 320-330lbs. Even Carimi is playing 10lbs lighter this year than he did last year or in college. Webb is the only really big 330lbs guy on the line.

I'm not gonna fret over OMG. He's not a good starter even a LT and he was an abortion as a swing OT when we asked him to play RT so he's no great loss. Seattle can have him. But we could sure use a vet who can handle either side of the line right now besides CWill. Unfortunately he may be the best we can find.
