    News on Some Others................

Practice makes perfect: All eight players signed to the eight-man practice squad Saturday were with the team in training camp. Quarterback Matt Blanchard, running backs Armando Allen and Harvey Unga, offensive tackles Cory Brandon and James Brown, wide receiver Joe Anderson, defensive end Aston Whiteside and cornerback Isaiah Frey all have jobs. Practice squad players earn a minimum of $5,700 per week during the season.

Taking a look: The Bears brought in veteran offensive tackle Jonathan Scott for a visit. The Lions released him earlier this week after he suffered a knee injury early in training camp. A fifth-round pick for the Lions in 2006, he played in 28 games and made 14 starts over the last two seasons for the Steelers. It's likely the Bears wanted to see how Scott is physically.

Extra points: Guard Ricky Henry, whom the Bears waived Friday, was signed to the Saints practice squad. They tried to sign him to their 53-man roster late last season. … Wide receiver Chris Summers, let go in first cuts, joined the Vikings practice squad. … Safety Mark LeGree, waived by the Bears, will join the Falcons practice squad. … The Vikings released former Bears cornerback Zack Bowman. … The Bears return to practice Monday.

Well it seems like Phil Emery has the same idea as we do. No doubt he's looking for vet OT as a reserve/swing tackle so they took a look at former Lions OT Jonathan Scott whose a 7th year vet with some starting experience. His injury is probably the biggest issue as to whether he can be of any help right now.

Looking over the PS roster I'm not sure I understand why they would keep another DE (Aston Whiteside) over an OG like Ricky Henry who was scooped up immediately by the Saints. If the Saints had tried to sign him off the Bears PS last year which is why the Bears moved him to the permanent roster then they had to know that there was little or no chance of his clearing waivers in order to put him on the PS again this year. Are Spencer and Rachal really that much better than Henry? The kid looked awfully good as a run blocker in the Cleveland game.

As expected Chris Summers ends up on the Vikes PS instead of the Bears but I think the fact that we didn't keep him has to do with his being unable to make it as a STeamer whereas Joe Anderson can play STeams. We also have two big WRs so keeping him purely for his size wasn't that important.

Zach Bowman finally has his NFL career ended. If the Vikes couldn't use him I doubt he's high on anyone else's list. He looked like the real deal a few years back but then just seemed to hit a brick wall as far as his progress went. Good cover guy but can't play in a zone worth shit.

The Saints know oline talent. They have one of the best olines every year. If they think Henry is good, then he is good. I just keep hoping Tice knows what he's doing (FWIW, I had this same feeling all the time "Mad Mike" Martz was making crazy moves).

I sure wish Chris Summers had NOT gone to a division rival. He won't be a threat this year, but he will be a great WR soon. He's a young Brandon Marshall - only taller. Coming from tiny Liberty College, means he'll need a year to get up to NFL speed with his game.

I really don't think Ricky Henry is as good as he needs to be to start in the NFL, however, neither are most of the other guys we WILL be starting. However, Ricky ain't from Texas, Johnathon Scott is. Everyone knows that makes you a better football player.

I think we would be relying on Tice on this stuff.

I would trust that Emery and the newly expanded scouting dept. would either:

    -augment Tice's personnel decisions
    -contrast them/balance them out
    -or show them as lacking

Either way it's all good. To constantly look to upgrade esp. at weak positions.
