Agreed. Surely there is a reasonable compromise here. I can understand the owners wanting to move from a DBP to a Defined Contribution Plan. That's the way it has been moving throughout the business world for several decades. DBPs are dinosaurs and employers understandably don't want to be on the hook for guaranteeing investment returns, especially in the crappy economic/market conditions that have prevailed since the dot-com bubble burst over a decade ago (DBPs do, DCPs don't). So, can't you owners give the refs full-time status/benefits and a bit more pay/401k match in return? This isn't all that hard of a compromise for either side to make imho.
Sorry, these replacement refs do suck. It's not really their fault. They are mostly Div 2 & 3 guys with some HIGH SCHOOL refs thrown in there too. No way to reasonably expect these guys to officiate the NFL game as well as the regulars when just thrown in there. Whole different level by far and even different rules too. There's going to be a lot of blown/missed call controversies starting right off the bat in week 1. It's going to be a mess.

But their pre season games are their learning curve, this is where they are getting used to the rules. And they have improved each week.
BUT it was the correct ruling, they were just supposed to ask the HC; ever see a ref call that before? No so in that NY/CHI game they actually showed they knew more of the playbook then the reg refs apparently are aware of.
I complain each week about the officiating, So now w/replacements I'm not? makes no sense man. Of course these guys will be bad and worse then the normal refs, I just don't think it's the gap you see it as.
This is where we disagree. If they knew the rule as well as you say they did then the rule states that Coughlin would have that "option" and they never asked if he wanted to exercise it. It is not an automatic call at the end of the 1st Q. Only at halftime or the end of the game.
These guys are so far away from being able to competently ref at this level that certain games will turn into disasters. I'm sure of of it. Not all of them but enough that games will turn on a bad call or too.
Good officials should be transparent as far as the outcome of a game is concerned. Are they always? No. Not even the regular guys are that good but these guys have become the focal point of some games and that's not the way it should be.
The regular guys have a few legit issues and a few others aren't worth pursuing like the pension plan deal. What bothers me though is the way the NFL is handling it. They're trying to blow smoke up our collective asses about these guys like we were a bunch of twelve year olds or women who little or nothing about the game. That and the fact the owners will never move off dead center until they're virtually forced to do it.
This will be a PR nightmare for them before it's all over and done with but they simply chalk it up to the cost of doing business. It's risk a risk management basis operating system. They aren't losing $$$ because of it and until they do it won't matter to them what the overall effect is.
It's like the automaker who decides it's easier to spend $20 mil to settle some wrongful death lawsuits caused by a defective part than it is to spend $200 mil on a recall. The quality of the NFL product will suffer as far as the players and the fans are concerned but as long as it isn't costing the NFL $$$ it will continue to be the way they do business.

Soul they knew it better then the full time refs who have never called it.

I've come to the conclusion that this is one of those "life things" I can't do anything about. We'll survive the replacement refs. Life will go on.

Maybe there's a reason it's never been called before. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense does it? I'd rather they knew the rules the govern more obvious calls like "incidental contact" isn't Pass Interference and you don't throw a flag for PI when both players are out of bounds and a ball is uncatchable.
If I were them I wouldn't be overly proud about knowing the bizarre but missing the obvious. They have to spot the ball more times during a game than they'll ever have to deal with a penalty as time expires at the end of the first Q.
Just sayin'

Hmmm doesn't seem like these new replacement refs are near as bad as you claimed; Dungy even said they were no worse then the regular refs; which apparently is the general consensus. Missed a few calls, some obvious, but that's what the regular refs do(as I stated). Guess the world isn't ending after all....

LOL, got up pretty early to start arguing about this already didn't you? Nobody can be bad all of the time and since it WAS a nationally televised game you know the NFL had the best crew they could find covering it. Now if they can officiate 15 more just like this one I may agree with you but Sunday isn't here yet.
Hope your daughter does well following her surgery.
