Bears depth chart
Bears starting QB Jay Cutler and backup Jason Campbell take a breather during training camp last month. (Phil Velasquez/Tribune) (September 2, 2012) |

Quarterback (2)
Jay Cutler
Jason Campbell
Comment: Team made decision not to keep three veteran passers on roster to create flexibility elsewhere. Undrafted rookie Matt Blanchard gets spot on practice squad.
Running back (3)
Matt Forte
Michael Bush, Lorenzo Booker
Comment: Even though there are only three backs on the roster and six wide receivers, offensive coordinator Mike Tice still will prioritize ground attack.
Wide receiver (6)
Brandon Marshall, Devin Hester
Earl Bennett, Alshon Jeffery*, Eric Weems, Dane Sanzenbacher
Comment: Will be very interesting to see whether Jeffery can continue to turn heads. If he does, could push for starting job by middle of season.
Tight end (4)
Kellen Davis
Matt Spaeth, Evan Rodriguez*, Kyle Adams
Comment: Bears keep extra body here with decision to go without a fullback. Time for Davis to play up to club's expectations.
Offensive line (8)
J'Marcus Webb, Chris Spencer, Roberto Garza, Lance Louis, Gabe Carimi
Chris Williams, Chilo Rachal, Edwin Williams
Comment: Chris Williams provides great flexibility because he can play every line position except center. Spencer and Louis entering final year of contracts.
Defensive end (5)
Julius Peppers, Israel Idonije
Shea McClellin*, Corey Wootton, Cheta Ozougwu
Comment: Search for reliable third end continues.Real hope is first-round pick McClellin answers pressing need. Wootton and Ozougwu had good summers.
Defensive tackle (4)
Henry Melton, Matt Toeaina
Stephen Paea, Amobi Okoye
Comment: Melton needs to play better against run in contract year, and someone else at this position needs to provide push in the pass rush.
Linebacker (7)
Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs, Nick Roach
Geno Hayes, Patrick Trahan, Blake Costanzo, J.T. Thomas
Comment: Really isn't any cover here if Urlacher's left knee is an issue throughout season, but Bears are hoping for some special-teams standouts among backups.
Cornerback (5)
Charles Tillman, Tim Jennings
D.J. Moore, Kelvin Hayden, Sherrick McManis
Comment: Jennings had strong camp and preseason, and his former teammate with Colts, Hayden, provides improved depth.
Safety (5)
Chris Conte, Major Wright
Craig Steltz, Anthony Walters, Jeremy Jones*
Comment: Pass rush is biggest concern on defense, but safety is a close second and it begins with durability of starters.
Special teams (4)
Pat Mannelly, Robbie Gould, Adam Podlesh
Ryan Quigley*
Comment: Podlesh's hip injury forced team to carry second punter. Quigley won't be around long.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Looks a hell of a lot better than the one we had at the beginning of the 2011 season. I can't see much in the way of any changes forthcoming either. There's a pretty nice blend of older vets, young vets and rookies here and not may holes that I can see with the exception of the one we all agree one.

Looks a helluva lot better and deeper than last year especially when you add Collins @ DT and kick off Quigs which I have a feeling will happen between weeks 1 and 2.
Now if only this one other tweak could happen...
Offensive line (8)
J'Marcus Webb, Chris Williams, Roberto Garza, Lance Louis, Gabe Carimi
Chris Spencer, Edwin Williams, vet swing OT off waiver wire
Comment: Chilo Rachal was released after the Bears signed veteran OT xxxxxxxx to man the swing position.

We need to have a year with fewer injuries to key people. Injuries will happen, but it makes a HUGE difference as to WHO gets injured. This may ultimately determine our success this season.

I'm ecstatic to see Campbell behind Cutler.

Hester is listed as #2 WR???
I have to say I LIKE this. He has much time left in his career and having his speed on the field IS something to be happy about next to Marshall who will get double coverage
