Bears Bring in OT Jonathan Scott for a Look...........

Bears bring in veteran offensive tackle for a look

The Chicago Bears have not made any moves to add help for the offensive line but it doesn’t mean the club has not been looking.

The Bears hosted veteran free agent tackle Jonathan Scott for a visit at Halas Hall, according to an NFL source. Scott was let go by the Detroit Lions earlier this week after suffering a knee injury near the start of training camp. It was his second tour with the Lions, who drafted him in the fifth round in 2006 out of Texas.

Scott has also played for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills. He played in 28 games making 14 starts for the Steelers over the last two seasons as injuries impacted the depth chart in Pittsburgh. In his career, Scott has played in 58 games and made 28 starts.
It could be the Bears just wanted to check Scott out physically to see where he is at. Teams work to firm up emergency lists at this time of year in the event a need arises, and the Bears have Chris Williams as a reserve for both tackle positions right now. The team released two undrafted tackles on Friday, waiving Cory Brandon and James Brown. There is a possibility one or both could return to the practice squad, which can be formed beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The Bears also reached injury settlements with veteran wide receiver Rashied Davis and linebacker Adrien Cole.

If he's injury free and can play Scott is about as good a prospect for a vet swing tackle as we're likely to find. It's unlikely they'd add him to the roster now but I'll be curious to see what takes place here after game one.

If Spencer gets destroyed playing LG will they sign a guy like Scott and put CWill back at LG?

I still believe that the Bears should move on without Webb and put CWill back to LG / Spencer to RG. They both weren't bad guards last season. Move Carimi to LT (he has the size and the ability to play on the left side, I don't care what Tice and Lovie think) and let Louis play RT. He wasn't really that bad either.

    Carimi - CWilliams - Garza - Spencer - Louis

Too bad it ain't gonna happen, though.

I'm sorry but that's just not going to happen. Not with how Louis performed towards the end of last year. He's okay as an emergency, but he has a much higher ceiling at guard.

I hope so on both points. In the short week between games 1 & 2 a roster move/cut will have to be made to re-activate Collins from suspension. Likewise, a spot will open up as soon as Pods is ready to punt and Quigs is released. If Scott can be our swing OT, Rachal would be the guy I'd boot outta here. That scenario is the best OL "tweak" Emery may still have in his bag of tricks for this year.

No, that wouldn't work. Just coming back from that injury Carimi might struggle right now even more than Webb. For all intents and purposes Carimi is still a rookie and this time we need to leave him alone and let him develop at one spot and not move him around trying him out somewhere else.

On to of that Louis isn't an OT. He was an improvement over OMG at RT for a few games but KC ate him alive to the tune of 5 sacks in one game. That's even worse than Webb's worst game at LT. Louis is strictly an OG and a dire emergency OT as best. Let's hope we never have to see him there again.

I'd just like to see them bring in Scott or someone like him and move CWill back to LG. Then we'd have exactly the same 5 who started 2011 in the same positions they started in then. I think if Carimi had not gotten injured that would have been a decent line by midseason last year. You'd have two very athletic OG, a run blocking stud at RT, the physically correct but mentally inept at LT hoping he improves, and a wise old bird running the show at OC. That's a good set up for this team.

Scott is Omiyale - but an "Omyale" who has fought injuries his whole career. He's never been able to stay healthy. If we were going to do this, I wish we had just kept Frank.

We just keep reaching into the toilet and pulling out another "stinky one" don't we? I get so tired of it. Really.

But this is the point. We're not gonna find guys out there who are much if any better than OMG was but if we find one he at least needs to be able to play both sides of the line. Scott can probably do that whereas OMG never could.

That's the whole reason why CWill is playing swing tackle. Because he can play both sides of the ball. He may not do it all that well but he sure as hell is better than OMG was. We bitch about him and other lineman as well but the plain truth is there really isn't much better available. Look at the waiver wire. Does anyone jump out at you as far as the answer to our prayers?

Unless we find another OT CWill will stay at OT. That's it. He's more valuable to us as a reserve if we need him than he is starting or at least that what Tice believes and that's all that matters. No backup OT no CWill at LG. It's just that simple.

Amen, Soul. That's pretty much what I was going to say but you beat me to it and said it better.

JABF, my forlorn OL friend, you are being a bit unrealistic to turn your nose up so readily. Do you really think we are going to get much better than a dinged-up, reserve-quality-at-best OT off the waiver wire? Do you really think we are going to find some stud backup OT w/o health and/or performance concerns who was waived by another team? Be realistic as to what can legitimately be achieved looking for "OT roadkill" as you put it at this 11th hour. We aren't going to add to a fantasy "dream team OL" at this point for sure.

I'll settle for an "OMG+" who's reasonably healthy and can be serviceable at both ends of the line in a pinch. One year deal at minimal $. We are just looking for someone to fill CWill's current position on the depth chart, freeing him up to go back to LG. We all agree that's our "best 5" starting lineup for multiple reasons, don't we? The one consistent positive you can say about Webb is that he's been durable thus far. Like it or not, he's the 1st string LT for 2012 and that is not likely to change or improve this year. Pray Carimi stays healthy and this "roadkill OT" we may hopefully sign just rides the pines for most/all season. I'd release Rachal to make a spot for him if/when it happens.

That's the best scenario that is realistically still possible to improve the personnel and depth chart of this OL for 2012.
