NFL Rumors: Should Chicago Bears Consider O.J. Atogwe?
One of the bigger names to hit the market after final roster cuts on Friday was safety O.J. Atogwe, who was released by the Philadelphia Eagles.
Atogwe was attempting to make the Eagles’ roster after he was cut just a year into a five-year deal with the Washington Redskins. A hamstring injury he sustained in the preseason finale didn’t really help his case. Now a free agent, Atogwe could be an intriguing option for the Chicago Bears, if they choose to look for some help for the secondary. The defensive backs, and the depth back there, have been something of a concern for this team, even going back to last season. The safeties are especially troubling.
The team is set to roll with Major Wright and Chris Conte as the starting safeties this season, with likes of Craig Steltz, Anthony Walters, and undrafted rookie Jeremy Jones serving as the depth. Third round pick Brandon Hardin is on injured reserve. The Bears have reportedly looked at former Green Bay Packers safety Charlie Peprah, so they’re at least exploring the potential to upgrade at safety. Atogwe could be a player worth taking a chance on for this team. Atogwe had a very solid career with the St. Louis Rams before spending just one year with the Redskins and failing to make the team out of camp with the Eagles. His best years are likely behind him, but he’d at least be a nice veteran presence to have around the young guys currently starting. It’s unlikely that the Bears will seriously pursue Atogwe, if at all, especially since his injury would like him prevent him from contributing right away. Nonetheless, it’s something to consider.

Another injured safety. You can never have too many of 'em.
Trestman - Kromer - Tucker - DeCamillis
I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

I'll admit to being interested in Atogwe before he signed with Washington, but not now. Much like Archuletta, he didn't pan out in a place the desperately needed shoring up at the safety position (sound familiar) in large part because he was/is on the downside of his playing career.

only issue is that he was playing in a scheme not fit for him. Hes a cover 2 safety not a 3-4 scheme guy.

I live in the Washington TV viewing area. Whether I wanted to or not, I basically watched the Redskins weekly. His skills and health have eroded. He isn't as fast. He isn't recovering from injury as quickly.
The scheme doesn't help him, but it doesn't fully explain his decline.

Exactly. I don't want anyone else back there who might remind me of either Archuleta or Meriweather. I'd stick with the guys we have and just work on getting them better through experience. We're never gonna get set back there until we develop our own guys.

My question is when in the hell are we going to develop our own guys and do so with a degree of urgency? At some point, the Bears are going to have to consider drafting some of their picks in the secondary in the first couple of rounds rather than the third, fourth, or even fifth rounds. Not every player turns out to be like a Mike Brown, a Chris Harris, or a Danieal Manning. Also, when we've finally developed a set of safeties who are among the very best in the league, we cut ties with them before we have had the opportunity to get the most out of their abilities over the long haul. This cannot happen. Jerry Angelo was responsible for this type of action far too many times. I hope Emery won't fall into the same trap.

It's too bad that Mike Brown isn't still with us. He's been relatively healthy for the Chiefs ever since he got cut by the Bears.
