Bears Season: "Jay Cutler places Bears’ offensive burden on the line"

I think Cutler's right. It boils down to the oline.

    LINK to the article

Jay Cutler places Bears’ offensive burden on the line

“We can only do as much as they can handle,’’ Cutler said of his offensive line. “If they can only block three-step drops, we can only throw three-step passes. We’re limited to what they can do and as of now, they’ve been holding up really well.

“We’ve got some guys that can play football on the outside. There’s no doubt about that. It’s gonna hopefully make my job easier; being able to get them the ball, let them work. Up front I think the guys know that there’s some pressure on them because Matt Forte can run if we give him holes. If I get the guys the ball on the outside and we hold up enough time we can make some good plays. So it’s gonna be fun to watch.’’

Or real ugly, real quick, especially against a new-look Indianapolis Colts defense that is running the same type of 3-4 that first-year head coach Chuck Pagano ran as the defensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens last season.

So the question remains: How much can the offensive line handle?

“It’s a test,’’ center Roberto Garza said. “For us, we’ve talked about it, leading into this game all season long. This is where it all starts for us, our journey.’’

“Yeah, we have to prove ourselves, obviously, make Jay feel comfortable back there because this is a quarterback league,’’ right tackle Gabe Carimi said. “And if he plays well, we’ll all going to have a good chance to win games.’’

If the season tanks due to the oline, will the fans just write it off as "just a typical year of oline failure" and not really care? Like a bad movie that they've seen many times before & nothing to get worked up about. Just another season down the toilet...kind of like the Cubs every year. You half way expect to lose?

Or will there be epic heat this time?

I think there will be epic heat in general and criticism of Tuce & Lovie in particular. I think the general consensus of knowledgeable fans are that this is one of most talented Bears teams in a long time and has weapons in the passing game not seen in decades (if ever) and that the OL needs to be held accountable if it flops and kills the year.

This same bad movie analogy is good . As mentioned in the things I hate thread- guys who don't play till the whistle = the same bad movie . Some of our o-linemen have a 3 second clock in their damn heads like ' ok my 3 seconds is up I'm done now ' and then someone gets past them ( either inside or outside ) and Jay then has to run, or gets bottled up, and either gets sacked or has to hurry a throw.

And how hard is it, for these guys to learn to just re-adjust and push their man in the direction he's going ? If he gets a step on you inside - or outside .... just use it against him and just push him in that direction ..... instead of just letting him go . Nobody expects perfection on every play, and guys are gonna get 'a step' on you sometimes . But you gotta suck it up and play for the xtra 2-3 seconds sometimes too .

Never enough energy to do it right the first time - but always enough energy to run 3 more plays to try and make up for a bad play right ? Cept it doesn't always work out the way u want it to . And that's the crap that kills drives and gets all of us pissed at them . DO THE WORK !
What should you call any : Fumble , Hold , Interception , Three and out , or Sack ?

    A " F.H.I.T.S " ? or a J'Marcus ?

Chicago Bears Jay Cutler places Bears’ offensive burden on the line

    BY JOE COWLEY jcowley@suntimes.com

    Last Modified: Sep 5, 2012 04:03PM

It’s a route that Jay Cutler has been very comfortable in driving the past year.
A left on Cusp of Greatness St., a quick right on Give Me Weapons Ave., and then parking that bus directly on top of his offensive line.
So with the start of the regular season just days away, why change now?
Since mid-May, the Bears quarterback has taken at least three opportunities to publicly put the pressure on his offensive line. More specifically, to call them out for allowing too much pressure to be put on him by opposing defenses.
The jabs might have been a bit softer on Wednesday, but they were still thrown.
Cutler was asked for the 100th time in the last month about having a new and improved collection of weapons around him, and found a way to turn that into an “or else.’’
It’s a journey that won’t be starting from the crawling position, either.
According to Cutler, the offensive game plan won’t be limited because of the line unless the unit shows that it needs some training wheels in the blocking packages.
“We’ve got to go at [the opposing defense],’’ Cutler said. “We’ve got to attack and we’ll learn from there. We’re not gonna sit back and second-guess ourselves on what we can call and what we can’t call. We’re gonna go into it feeling good and confident that we can protect it, protect me and open up holes for Matt, and we’ll take it from there.’’
Which is the mentality Cutler has been hoping to have since he was first acquired from Denver prior to the 2009 season. Just give him the weapons on the outside, keep him upright, and get out of the way.
“You know I think in past years it’s been defense first and for good reason,’’ Cutler said. “They were really good at it. They won games. With [new general manager] Phil [Emery] coming in he made an emphasis to help out the offensive guys, to help us be successful.’’
The good news for Cutler is that the offensive line did keep him grass-stain free in the two preseason games he played in. Then again, preseason is an entirely different atmosphere than what awaits the line in Week 1 on Sunday afternoon.
“We’re a work in progress, but I like where we’re at,’’ Garza said. “Once the lights go on, it’s a little different.’’
And as far as the latest body blow connecting from Cutler? Well, that’s just life as a Bears offensive linemen these days.
“Yeah, we have to prove ourselves, obviously, make Jay feel comfortable back there because this is a quarterback league,’’ right tackle Gabe Carimi said. “And if he plays well, we’ll all going to have a good chance to win games.’’
Tire tracks from the bus and all.

It's a good article. I think Jay sums it up nicely. We can only go as far as the guys up front are gonna allow us to go.

One noticeable difference this year is that Jay is speaking out on his likes and dislikes and his concerns. With Martz it was never a matter of whether he liked it or not. It was they way it was gonna be and that went for the line too. It didn't seem to make ay difference to him when Webb had to handle a monster pass rusher like Jared Allen he was still gonna call his 7 step drops.

For all of our concerns and all of our complaints there is a far more common sense approach to offensive football being applied this year than anything we've seen over the past two years. So much so that we battle more over whether or now we should have cut Tyler Clutts now than we do over whose gonna catch the football.

The line we have is the line we have. It's not going to improved from anywhere else but internally. The five guys upfront have to make it their mission to improve their play individually and as a group each and every week for 16 weeks because only a team that can open holes for it's backs and protect it's QB is ever gonna win a Super Bowl these days.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Man, as a Yankees fan, I find it intolerable to not try to win. We've only won one World Series in the past twelve seasons, though we've appeared in the World Series three times and made the playoffs as either division champs or Wild Card all but once -- the 2008 season -- since 2001. Right now, the Yankees are at a crossroads. Yes, we're in first place at the moment, but we've blown a ten game lead since July 18, and things are looking pretty grim. We may not only lose our grapple hold on the AL East, but a spot in the playoffs altogether. Yankee fans on the message board of which I'm a member are not happy about this and are blaming the front office for not making any moves over the past two off seasons other than a couple of miniscule trades and one free agent signing (Kuroda). Right now, I would say that GM Brian Cashman is looking over his shoulder at possibly losing his job due to the team's lack of solid postseason performance over recent years as well as this team's weakness in both starting pitching AND in the lineup. When you go out and sign or trade for a bunch of .250 or below hitters and are paying $32 million for Alex Rodriguez to bat .270 with 15 home runs and 45 RBI while he cannot stay healthy for a full season, something seems fishy, and it's not just the pussy belonging to the woman Cashman schnooked who would go on to extort money from him.

What does this all have to do with Chicago sports fans? It shows that a large percentage of sports fans in Chicago, Bears fans included, will blithely follow their teams regardless of the results they post on the field of play. The Bears haven't been consistently good since the years 1984-1991, and only recently has the franchise shown any signs of life, albeit inconsistently. I think fans in general are happy-go-lucky people who will settle for whatever crap Halas Hall puts out there to compete. It's well known that the Bears are getting ready to lose the all-time lead in the series against the Packers, and it's also well known that the Giants are one championship away from being tied with the Bears for second most NFL championships.

Look. The Bears are the winningest team in the history of the NFL not because they've been good or great over the past fifty years, but because of the dominance it experienced between 1920 and 1967. During that time, the Bears won nearly 69% of the games the franchise played, and won its first eight championships all during that time. After Halas retired in 1968, the team went into a tailspin for seventeen years, in which during that time the Bears would only appear in the playoffs during the 1977 and 1979 seasons. The Bears hired Jim Finks to rebuild the Roman Empire, and he did so, but then was let go for whatever reason (probably Mikey). The Bears won five divisional titles from 1984-1988, including Super Bowl XX, and then had a couple of good years in the early 1990s before falling apart again. Virginia McCaskey took the first step in trying to turn around the club's fortunes when she fired son Michael and appointed Jerry Angelo as GM. When Jerry Angelo didn't work out after several years of attempting to build consistently contending teams and failing miserably at doing so, Virginia's son George, who was hired to replace Michael as Chairman and CEO just two years ago, instructed Ted Phillips to fire Angelo because he couldn't draft well. What they did was go after a GM who would major in scouting talent and thus would stand the best chance at bringing in the best talent available, and thus they hired Emery. I think the team is going in the right direction here because of this move.

That being said, fans of the Bears don't know what it's like to win, just like they don't know what it's like for the Blackhawks, the Cubs, the White Sox, or the Bulls to follow suit. Sure -- the Hawks and Sox have each won a championship over the past seven years, and the Bulls won six NBA titles in the 1990s and have been competitive over the past couple of years -- but let's face it: most of the winning that the teams in Chicago experienced happened so long ago that most of today's fans don't really remember that level of success. I don't understand this mentality, but every year when I gear up for another season of Bears football, I start out expecting the team to at least make the playoffs and playing deep into January or beyond. Perhaps 2006 and 2010 spoiled me. I don't know. But I know that as a Yankees fan, I consider winning to be a business, and it's something that the Bears ought to consider doing more seriously. If that means getting all new coaches, so be it.

Good post and I learned a little more about our history . BUT - the only Chi team I've never seen win it all is the Cubs ..... so it could be worse.

And that Blackhawks ride a couple years ago was almost as much fun as the 85 Bears was . But ur right it has been too long for Da Bears . It would be great to see a resurgence .

It starts with the GM. If Emery can turn this franchise around, then we could be one of the best NFL teams for a number of years. I rag on the oline woes, but we haven't seen a single game yet. We COULD be a lot better than we think. Some posters have mentioned over the summer that we don't have to be great, but just average. If you give Cutler "average" from the oline, I think we can be very good.

Then, my dream is that Emery begins rebuilding the oline to be better. If the oline is average this year, then maybe he adds a powerful piece, next year. Maybe 2 this first year.

Just have to watch the games now, and see what we really have this year. Can't wait.
