Sorry, back to the OP, Sprinkle was a mean ass dude. I've seen a few clips from him by NFL films & people who got hit by the "Claw" said it was like getting smacked by a chainsaw.
Yep "The Deacon" may have put them all to shame. I think the sacks numbers of some of those old timers would amaze us because in those days lineman couldn't hold and grab jerseys like they do today and QBs were treated the same as any other player. You got the ball? You're gonna get nailed as hard as I can hit you.
When you look at the photos of Y.A. Tittle from the '63 Bears vs Giants Championship Game he had blood pouring down that old chrome dome of his. They beat the hell out of him that game far worse than the '85 Bears beat up on Eason and Grogan.
In the old days they days they didn't call you for roughing just for running into the QB after he released the ball. You had to practically stomp on the guy afterword as he was getting up and some coaches (who shall remain nameless) actually encouraged it.
The Bears seldom ever got called for rules violations like that because Halas made up the rules, LOL.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I know we need the safety rules we have today because players have become so big & so fast & even the players who played in the 60's & 70's have lots of physical & mental problems from playing the game. Having said that I miss the "glory days" of football. The late 60's & all through the 70's was the era that made me love the game.

I wish I had been old enough in the 1980s to watch and understand the game of football so that I could have seen what real power running games were like. Nowadays, it's just running the ball between the tackles, but back then, teams got into the split backs formations and ran both up the gut and off-tackle. I think it was in Super Bowl VII when Bob Griese only threw seven passes. No wonder I like old time Big Ten football so well!

watch the early 70's and before, that was just awsome. todays game just isn't the same, but i understand why. ( well except for the QB over protections) Flag on # xx for looking at the QB wrong, 15 yard penalty and 7 points.
The passion of a few, to rule the many, that's Washington D.C.. Where else was that said before, about whom?

I've watched a lot of film of teams from as far back as the 1960s in both college and the NFL, to now, and the game that was played back then was far more fun to watch. I liked watching Ohio State, Michigan, USC, Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, and Alabama a lot in college because they would either run the ball out of the I-Formation off-tackle or straight up between the tackles with both the fullback and the running back, or the teams would run the Wishbone or some variant of it, like Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Alabama. I've always liked a hardcore ground game. The Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs are the world's best in the NFL today at balancing the run with the pass.
