"Mac" on SI Cover for Story About Brain Trauma...........

By Fred Mitchell, Tribune reporter 9:04 p.m. CDT, September 5, 2012

The girlfriend of former Bears quarterback Jim McMahon is one of the subjects of next week's Sports Illustrated cover article that is titled: "The Women Behind The Retired NFL Men Who Suffer From Brain Trauma."

Laurie Navon tells the magazine she started noticing changes in McMahon’s behavior in early 2007 before tests revealed early onset dementia. Navon and McMahon appear on the cover of the Sept. 10 issue of the magazine.

McMahon first disclosed to the Tribune in November 2010 that he was experiencing short-term memory loss when the Bears observed their 25-year anniversary of Super Bowl XX in Chicago.

"Back then, it was just tape an aspirin to your helmet and you go back in," McMahon said then. "I've worked with some neurosurgeons and it's a very serious thing, man. My memory's pretty much gone. There are a lot of times when I walk into a room and forget why I walked in there. I'm going through some studies right now and I am going to do a brain scan. It's unfortunate what the game does to you."

After being drafted in the first round out of Brigham Young in 1982, McMahon suffered knee, shoulder and hand injuries, as well as concussions. In 1984, he suffered a lacerated kidney.

In addition to Navon and McMahon, Mary Lee Kocourek (wife of former tight end Dave Kocourek) and Mary Ann Easterling (widow of former safety Ray Easterling) share their stories in the SI article.

OK Jim, but how much of it was blows to the head, how much of it came from all those head butts with your linemen and how much has come from the beer?

    .
If you've ever had somebody you love, die of dementia, then you understand that it is a unspeakable way to die. It is horrific. It is incurable. You lose all dignity as you go through this. There is zero hope.

My heart goes out to Jim, and anyone else with this brain disease.

I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

It is a horrible way to go out. I've watched a couple of my clients develop Alzheimer's and literally just melt away back into and almost childlike state and then finally die. It's been heartbreaking to watch.

You have to wonder just how many of these players will go through that but as Mac says right at the end of the interview. Hey, we chose to do it and it beat working for a living.

I want to LIVE, not be alive. Family is well informed I'm on a DRN list. Body to science, organs to whoever... They get to wait for the BOX in the mail to do what they want after I'm gone. Seen to many people in my life be ALIVE.

Yeah 99. I know what ya mean. Parkinson's Disease killed my mom a few years back & my older brother has it now. He has to take over 20 pills a day. Like you said it just keeps killing ya a little more each day as they can treat the symptoms but there isn't a cure. Maybe someday.

Players are talking out of both sides of their mouths. Look at Witten, he wanted to sign a wiaver to let him play risking his life w/a cut spleen. Urlacher has admitted if he got his bell rung he'd limp off so the doc's would examine his ankle. And there are many more examples of guys that would rather go out and play when they are hurt then play it safe.

I feel for anyone dealing w/this. My mom's husband is doing going through this w/his Mom right now. It's brutal. I feel for Jimmy Mac too, but this is not a man that lived a healthy life outside of football either, heavy drinker/partier also. So trying to prove that it was blows to the head and not his lifestyle.

What about all the people that get it who did lead a healthy life. I think its in ones genes. Are addicts more prone to getting it? Are heathy people?

Think you'll be hard pressed to find to many NFL players that drank little and did few drugs in the 60-00's. But those are the ones that DO have a legit argument.

Now explain how players today are lying and willing to sign waivers to play; and yet somehow these old players were being forced to play against their will's and the teams were hiding the truth of how dangerous the sport was? The players today are building a case AGAINST the retired players lawsuit.
