I'm not sure of the implications for the Bears or the exact rules yttocs. I'll see if I can find some stuff in the CBA on it and post it if I can. I think basically you do it out of consideration for the player. If the guy would rather be somewhere else then I say let him.
We picked him us as a FA and I doubt as a simple STeams guy whose never been much of a WR that we could have even gotten a 7th round pick for the guy. If he stuck around we may have had to let Sanz go and I think we're better off with Sanz myself.
Besides this Joe Anderson we put on the PS is a very similar WR as far as size and speed goes and he played well on STeams while I was watching. Younger, cheaper and PS eligible whereas neither Thomas of Sanz would have been.

The funny thing is if he would've been a Bear the last couple years he might've competed for a starting position.
I don't blame him either Jim. Sanz always has an edge on him because Cutler wanted Sanz to make the team and at best Thomas would see few chances on offense. When the Bears picked him up I recall him saying that he thought his receiving skills were better then they had been and he was looking for a place to prove that. It's obvious he wasn't gonna get that chance with the Bears.

Sorry, but I can't agree with those positions. I guess I am too old school.
If you think that you won't make the team, you don't just quit unless you want out of the league (he said he did, but apparently he didn't). You work your tail off and try to put some good stuff on tape for other teams to see so they might pick you up when cuts happen.
He accomplished absolutely nothing. He didn't keep working out (so he is not in as good a shape as he could have been), he got up and left then changed his mind, (which tells other teams that at worst he quits when he thinks he can't cut it or at best has a hard time deciding if he wants to play in the NFL), and he stayed out past the points where most teams picked up others from the player cuts.
I just don't think he went about it in the right way, and I don't think he gained anything more than he would have had he stayed in and got cut. It's a lose-lose all the way around.

Pretty much like Bell too now he's out there lobbying for work when he might have been collecting a $43,750 game check next week. Decent annual salary for some and that's weekly paycheck for a 4-6 year vet playing STeams like both would have been doing.
I'm not saying it isn't foolish but I do understand why both of them decided to look for another team. Playing RB and WR requires and ego and theirs estimated their worth higher than the Bears did and maybe the rest of the league as well. We'll see.

The fact that the Bears terminated his contract instead of putting him on the reserved/retired list is likely the best indicator that he was on the bubble and knew it.
