Maybe This is Why Safties Don't Stay Healthy............

Tulane safety Devon Walker stops breathing after hard hit, has to be revived by CPR

By Frank Schwab | Dr. Saturday – 2 hours 4 minutes ago

    (YouTube)
There was a frightening scene just before halftime of Tulane's game at Tulsa, when Tulane safety Devon Walker stopped breathing after a hard hit and had to be revived with CPR.

Fox Sports reported Walker stopped breathing on the field. Walker left the stadium in an ambulance. KTUL-TV reported that Walker suffered a broken neck and a collapsed lung, and a tracheotomy was performed. The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported that Walker has a cervical spine fracture, and he is in traction, immobilized and being treated for swelling.

According to a tweet from Tulane football, Walker is in stable condition at a nearby hospital, according to the team doctor.

Walker was attempting to tackle Tulsa H-back Willie Carter when he and teammate Julius Warmsley, a defensive tackle pursuing the play downfield, crashed into each other helmet-to-helmet. The Associated Press spoke to Walker's brother Raynard, who said their mother was watching the game on television when the injury happened.

Thoughts and prayers go out to Walker, his family and his teammates.

    Here's video of the hit:

Just an accidental helmet to helmet with a teammate and this is what happens. Freak injury but scary none the less and with his mother and brother watching on TV. Man that had to agonizing.

Cannot see the vid, did both have proper tackling, or were their heads down? If their heads were down, then it's not just about safeties, and it could have happened to any player not using good technique.

It's not exactly rocket science why these guys get so punished. Safeties have to make more "downhill" tackles than anyone else on the field. More plays where the runner has built up full steam and made his way to the second level, more tackles where they carry all of their momentum up to the LOS against the run and more tackles on WRs and safeties streaking across the intermediate. That's why the Reed's and Polamalu's of the world get an absolute crapload of respect from me -- other than their obvious playmaking ridiculousness and first ballot HOF likeliness.

They weren't actually making the tackle. The ball carrier was already down and both were coming from opposite directions to cover him on the ground. Walker dropped his head a little more but since both were looking down at the time and his teammate smacked into his helmet almost head on. It looks more like just a freak deal. Wrong place and the wrong time kind of stuff.

Once you watch the video you'll see it. It's also posted at Yahoo Sports.

Yeah I think both you and sox are right mo. These guys are involved in high speed collisions on nearly every play. That's why I was saying that if Hardin expects to have an NFL career he needs to learn how to protect himself out there. Same with Conte. College CBs have a lot to learn about playing Safety in the NFL.

To think I was a FS. But honestly I cannot imagine being in the game, at the game, or related in any fashion to this player. Could have been so tragic, hell still is.
