Oline failure: Is PART of the blame Emery's?

I definitely understand Cutler's frustration with the oline. Everyone Bears fan knew that the offensive line was rated #31 in the NFL in 2010, and the 2011 oline was rated #32 - worst in the entire NFL.

The fans realized the oline was our Achilles heal. But Emery failed to draft a single oline player. He didn't pursue any highly regarded FA's.

Tice is rearranging the deck chairs, trying to find SOME combination that will allow Cutler to survive this season. But it seems to me the Captain of this Titanic is Emery - who failed to see the iceberg. Surely he should be blamed for some of this failure. We have a team that could contend for a Super Bowl, but due to the bad oline could end up (again) in 3rd place in the NFC-N.

It really really makes me sick.

Yes, he had a surprisingly high amount of highly ranked prospects available when he picked up mcclellan. Also, his biggest pickup was either an UFA, or the worst 49ers lineman. Either way, it depends more on Tice to set the tempo with easy plays early, so we don't have the same results of the last two games

ya it's on him; and it's on tice for saying that he could work w/these guys, and it's on lovie for letting tice make that statement.

its on emery for not adding legit talent and its on tice for not developing anyone

I also wonder if Tice was told he had to make this unit work "as is" for 1 season, while Emery focused on other pressing needs THIS year. If that was the case, maybe Tice had to cover Emery's butt by saying we'd be OK with this unit. Then Tice would get much-needed help with the oline in 2013.

We will never know what went on behind the scenes. But no intelligent person (even fans) are stupid enough to think that we didn't need oline upgrades this year. Not after being rated the worst oline in the NFL last year (and 31st in the NFL the year before). That would be like saying we wanted Hanie to be our starting QB again this year after being a total disaster last year.

It just doesn't make any sense to me. The iceberg was there. Emery sailed the ship into it anyway.

With Lovie you never know. I could hear "Hanie is our quarterback, and there is still a lot of football left to play" :smile:

Lovie "likes our chances" too...once "the sun still comes up in the morning"....

Of course the way they like to play players out of position, maybe Lovie plays B.Marshall as LT next week :lol-032:

I disagree. IMO you can only do so much with one offseason and its unrealistic to expect Emery to fill every hole left by Angelo.

Emery had to review last year and prioritize what he was going to address and the five game winning streak prior to Cutlers injury showed that the offense had learned to work with this line to a certain extent. What this team couldn't survive last year was losing Cutler or Forte. After that what this team needed most was upgraded weapons on offense and defense. He addressed all those issues in the draft and free agency.


I'm not saying that this line is good! If Emery had more draft picks or there was available O line free agents then I am sure Emery would have addressed Oline. The fact is that this coaching staff was saying that this line could do the job and could point to that stretch of games as evidence that it could if Martz was fired. Thursday Tice did his best Martz impersonation for the game plan and the O-line couldn’t hold up. Quick passes? Screens? Seriously establishing a running game?

If they adjust the protections and the game plan then this O-line can be average which is what Emery was counting on.

If Emery looked at last year and said WR and DE were bigger issues then the 2yr running last rated OL then I fear for the future of the Bears while he's GM.

Totally unfair. I strongly disagree. Ric, I posted a bunch of stuff on this in other threads so I won't re-write it all.
