Gould: Incident could unify, define Bears

    By Staff

Jay Cutler spoke to his teammates about the J'Marcus Webb incident.
Chicago Bears kicker Robbie Gould said Tuesday that the Jay Cutler-J'Marcus Webb incident could make the team grow closer and become a defining moment.

But Gould also said if the matter lingers, it will have to be re-addressed.

"The way I look at it is this could be a very defining week in our season, and it's only (Week 3)," Gould said on "Football Night In Chicago" on ESPN 1000. "If you look at the situation as a whole, this is the exact moment I think that this team becomes as close as they possibly can.

"Because there are a lot of new faces. There are a lot of new guys in our locker room. And I think it's a defining moment for us, because if this lingers into (Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams), I think this could potentially be an issue that is going to need to be re-addressed. And we're going to have to go back to the basics and maybe evaluate it in a different way than it's already been handled."

Cutler admitted Tuesday on "The Jay Cutler Show" on ESPN 1000 that he shouldn't have bumped into Webb during Thursday's 23-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers, but Cutler said he didn't regret yelling at the offensive tackle. Cutler was sacked seven times and threw four interceptions.

"I think the best thing that we did this weekend was come in Saturday for film, instead of sitting on that loss for four days and coming in Monday and watching the film," Gould said. "We were able to come in and address the situation, not only from a loss standpoint but also be able to take care of the Jay Cutler-J'Marcus Webb situation in-house.

"I think it's a perfect situation for us to handle it amongst our teammates, to handle it (in)the locker room and say, 'Listen, this isn't tolerated, this isn't going to be tolerated, we're going to become a tighter knit group, we're going to do things together, we're going to do it as one, and not as individuals.' And the other part of it too is not only will it make the team grow, but I think if you look at the long-term effects it will have on a team like the Bears, with what I think is a very mature and older group of gentlemen in that locker room, I think it's going to make our team that much better on Sunday and the rest of the year."

I've been kinda thinking the same way. This could be the spark we need.

My gut feeling is that the team will be so fired up over the Packers debacle, that they will destroy the Rams. I mean absolutely blow them out.

Look for Tice to call a better game & consequently look for Cutler to put on a clinic.

It could unify, or pull apart. For the season sake, it better unify. It could also do nothing b/c the team just expects JC to do this crap.

I have no belief that this team can blow out St Louis, they aren't a good team, but they aren't bad either. I don't know that they could blow them out w/or w/out being fired up.

Tice just needs to stop worrying about showing the world that the Bears can now pass, and call the plays that will win the game. He tried to make GB a statement; unfortunately the wrong one was made.

Ric, this has had me baffled all week long. I can't get it out of my mind. Why on earth would Tice call such a stupid game? Really. It's almost like something Martz would pull. Crazy stuff. Crazy as a pet coon.

All we heard from Tice since the draft was how he was going to help this oline with play calling. Then he loses his mind last Thursday. I'm stunned. Nobody in their right mind would call the game Mike Tice called Thursday. Nobody man.

What the heck was his thinking? It's like once we make a guy our OC he turns into a lunatic. Now we have "Mad Mike" Tice -- instead of "Mad Mike Martz"...

Does anyone know that Rogers bitched out one of WR on Sundays and from what I hear it was ruff.

Yeah, I saw it. It was worse than Cutler, except he didn't do the bump 'n grind. But that was okay, because he's Aaron Rodgers. He's just trying to make a play and the WR screwed up. Once. Hmmm, how many times did Webb screw up?

I heard or read somewhere an analyst comparing the two bitchings. Saying Rodgers was ok because Jones made a mistake, either mental or being lazy. Webb just got beat. It's not like he could help it. So Cutler was out of line. I don't know if I buy justifying one and condemning the other but there is some logic to it.

ARodgers has a sb ring; and is considered one of the best qb's in the league; that affords you a lot of leeway; and like PF said, one guy made a mental lapse; the other is just not good enough to be out there.

Again, Cutler has a 4 td 1 int game; this blows over after 1 day tops. It was his 1 td 4int game that made this look worse. When your pissing your pants on the field it doesn't look good when you then dress down a player that isn't capable of doing better.
