Marshall: Cutler isn't the problem -- he's the solution

Brandon Marshall is becoming a GREAT locker room guy IMHO. Regardless of how you feel about the Cutler situation, you want to see players sticking up for one another. B.Marsh, stepped up today. Love to see that.

Marshall, Cutler isn't the problem -- he's the solution

Jay Cutler offered the assurance on Wednesday that “the sky is not falling quite yet” in his effort to downplay the hysteria reaction launched by his loss of cool and even more by his epically poor play against the Green Bay Packers last Thursday.

Wide receiver Brandon Marshall opined that “it feels like you [media] guys are hitting the panic button.”

Maybe. But there is more of a low-hanging cloud cover than was expected, mostly because of Cutler and Marshall. Cutler threw four interceptions to the Packers and Marshall let a touchdown pass go through his hands in the end zone.

If there is fracturing going on inside the locker room, it was not immediately apparent on Wednesday. The prevailing sentiment is simply that Cutler is the same guy he’s always been and that teammates have confidence this team can win with him at quarterback.

“They do, there’s no doubt,” Marshall insisted. “No doubt in my mind. Guys love Jay. Defensive guys to offensive guys to the coaches, so Jay is a guy that everyone wants to play for and we’re going to continue to do that.’’

Marshall may not be speaking for everyone in the locker room but he would like to see more of the fiery Cutler than less.

“When Jay is not fiery, that’s when I’m going to have a problem,” Marshall said. “I’m going to want to play with a different quarterback. That’s the reason I wanted to be here, that’s the guy I wanted to play for. We have to be productive, we have to make sure we’re communicating the right way, I’m sure there are things that we need to change, but that’s the guy I want to play for.

“I can go back to our second year in the league when he comes in the huddle and he tells us, ‘Hey, we’re going to go down 90 yards against San Diego and we’re going to score, and we’re going to go for two for the win.’ That’s the guy I want to play for and I’m glad to have him.’’

Great article! Regardless of what you think of Jay Cutler, you gotta respect how Brandon Marshall has his back on this. He also manned up on the drop. I liked that too.

Like Robbie Gould said, this could be a turning point for our season. Pulling this team together.

    Brandon Marshall defends Jay Cutler

    By Michael C. Wright
    ESPNChicago.com

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Chicago Bears receiver Brandon Marshall adamantly voiced support for Jay Cutler on Wednesday, saying he wouldn't want to play with him if the quarterback didn't possess a fiery demeanor.

"What people need to understand is everyone's different," Marshall said. "Jay's who he is. Whenever you get outside of yourself, I think that's when you create problems. You have to be who you are. So when Jay is not fiery, that's when I'm gonna have a problem. I'm gonna want to play with a different quarterback."

Marshall's comments come in the aftermath of widespread criticism aimed at Cutler for his behavior in the team's loss last Thursday to the Green Bay Packers. During a heated exchange with left tackle J'Marcus Webb near the team's sideline, Cutler bumped into the offensive tackle, triggering nationwide criticism from analysts, and even teammate D.J. Moore.

On "The Jay Cutler Show" Tuesday, Cutler admitted he shouldn't have bumped into Webb. On Wednesday, Cutler said "Everything's fine. It's a dead issue. We're moving forward."

"That's the guy I want to play for," Marshall said of Cutler. "We have to be productive. We have to make sure we're communicating the right way. I think Jay is learning how to communicate with different guys. The things that go on in our locker room, we try to keep in house."

Marshall, meanwhile, took responsibility for his own play in the team's loss at Green Bay. On the field for all of the Bears' 63 offensive plays, Marshall caught two passes for 24 yards. The sixth-most targeted receiver in the NFL, Marshall is tied for second in the NFL in drops (3) according to ESPN Stats & Information, and is second-to-last (83rd, just above Atlanta's Julio Jones) in catch percentage (78.6 percent).

"Jay can be one of the best to have ever done it, and it's on us to be better around him. One of the things that I want to be known is I've got to make better plays. I've got to make more plays," Marshall said. "Given the opportunities, I've got to come down with the ball. So if I can do my part and the guys around me can do their parts, I think we'll be able to move in the right direction."

Asked why Cutler receives so much commentary for seemingly every move made, Marshall explained it's "because of how he approaches a game" which makes the quarterback different from other highly-regarded signal callers around the league.

Having spent three seasons playing alongside Cutler in Denver, Marshall possesses plenty of insight into the quarterback's psyche.

"Even in our personal lives when we go out, Jay doesn't love the attention. He doesn't want to be the guy up front. He just wants to come to work and do his job," Marshall said. "He really loves this game. I think the media has a picture of what a quarterback is supposed to look like. In our sport now, it may be Tom Brady. It may be the great Peyton Manning; now Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees. They do things totally different."

Marshall said "there's no doubt in my mind" teammates continue to support Cutler, adding that "Jay is a guy that everyone wants to play for."

"A quarterback has a special way of getting guys going. When I look at Jay and having the time in Denver with Jay, and the time so far in Chicago, that's why I made the statement: 'That's the guy I want to play for,'" Marshall said. "Jay knows, he can just say -- I don't want to share it with you -- but he can just make a statement before practice and it'll get me going, because he knows my drive and where I'm at mentally.

"At the end of the practice I'm like, 'Man I just went maybe too hard,' and it was all because of what Jay said to me before. It's truly a blessing to be back in this, be back with him and (quarterbacks) coach (Jeremy) Bates, be with (coach) Lovie (Smith), coach (Mike) Tice. This is a dream job for me. I think we're going to take advantage of it. Hopefully we can come together as a team and win some games."

I think the bump is what did it. It was wrong and he knows it. If he would have just dressed him down, he may even have gotten points as a leader. After all, Webb WAS stinking it up.

He screwed up. But he was EXTREMELY frustrated. His own game was also going through a meltdown and I think he and Bates and Tice thought they were going to come out and show the world "the flying pigskin - greatest aerial act in the NFL", plus his public statements, etc. He was just really vested and it wasn't working and he just lost it.

You need a Tom Brady offense to come out and start flinging it right away and when he gets pressure he can't do it either. We knew (well, everyone but Tice) that we were going to get pressure. The game plan led Cutler right into the trap and he fell down big time and lost it.

Not making excuses for him. Leaders can't do that. He did and that's that.

That was my first thought too. But then I realized we don't have one on offense. Not like on defense. Cutler acts like a loony and probably has hurt his status as a true leader, especially after the Webb incident. Garza? Heck, he was part of the problem, along with the oline (not just Webb). Forte isn't very vocal. So who is the leader there? In the past it would have been Kreutz when he was a vet Pro Bowl lineman. But we don't have any Pro Bowl linemen now.

Probably the new guy, B.Marsh, is as good as anyone. That speaks volumes about our offense.

kruetz would have grabbed Jay by the throat and told to him stfu and never go against his lineman. Then decked Webb and told him to do his job better. After that, he would meet the press and say "everyone is on the same page"

True. A guy like that is priceless. We need to build an oline with some guys LIKE that. Build around Carimi and Lance Louis. Kick the rest to the curb. And no more "projects" like Webb please.
