Cutler says he still has faith in LT Webb

Whether he means it or not, I'm glad he said it. The team doesn't need any stupid distractions right now. They need to concentrate on moving forward, and winning games.

Cutler says he still has faith in LT Webb

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Despite hitting somewhat of a rough patch in their relationship on Thursday against the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler maintains faith in the ability of left tackle J’Marcus Webb to protect his blind side.
There seems to be no other choice.

“Have to, have to (have faith in Webb),” Cutler said. “For me to be successful at my job, I’ve got to have faith in him, and I’ve got to believe each week that he’s going to do his part, and it’s going to allow me to do mine.”

Explained by the quarterback as an attempt to motivate Webb, Cutler was caught on camera berating and eventually bumping into the offensive tackle during an exchange near Chicago’s sideline. On his radio program “The Jay Cutler Show” on ESPN 1000, Cutler said Tuesday that he’s already discussed the matter with the staff and the offensive linemen.

The team now wants to put that incident and the loss in the past, with Cutler calling it “a dead issue.”

Webb gave up two sacks and two more pressures against the Packers. Despite maintaining his starting job heading into Sunday’s game against St. Louis, the third-year veteran is down to his last chance at remaining a starter, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

Cutler, meanwhile, hopes the rough outing at Green Bay develops into a defining moment for the Bears.

“You want this to happen early in the season rather than late, definitely,” Cutler said. “You want this to be a hurdle you cross early in the year when it’s not as detrimental to your team, and you can fix it early and move on and grow together. This offense is still young. We’re still a lot of moving parts that are learning and trying to figure out each other and the relationships, and how to communicate within the week and during the game. The sky is not falling quite yet.”

I just read the article. It doesn't say he has faith in Webb. He says he has to have faith in Webb. Two different things.

Right. And I agree. A QB can't drop back every time looking over his shoulder knowing he is likely to get destroyed by a LB. He's gotta put it out of his mind and play. Also, Webb has given no reason for anyone to have faith in him. Jay sees this more than anybody, practicing with him every day. It's not that poor little Webb is untalented but trying his best, it's that he doesn't care. To have faith that he will become a good tackle means having faith he will suddenly decide to care.

I do think that is his biggest problem. He doesn't WANT IT. and I also want to say, he doesn't necessarily realize he is as bad as he is.

I wonder. I'm beginning to think Webb just lacks, emotionally, what it takes to be an NFL player. He also lacks the ability to handle quick edge rushers. The guy isn't letting those players go by on purpose. He just doesn't have the skill set to block those guys.

There is a difference between a guy simply not able to perform, versus a guy who doesn't care. He's not totally stupid. He cares what people think of him.

Tice pumped us all up by saying he has the "raw talent" to be our LT. I don't see it. Yes, he's a big guy who played for a little school when he couldn't cut it at the big college. So - if he can't hack it in college, what makes Tice think he's our "answer" at LT? That's nuts.

I don't understand anything Tice is doing with our oline. It's just flip flopping people around, and playing them in new positions - and then calling game plays that get our QB killed.

Yet he's hailed as the oline guru. Go figure.

He might have to say it (have faith) but he ain't gotta mean it.

In his defense (sort of), he transferred because he couldn't hack it academically. He played 12 games with the Longhorns as a true freshman.

Ya but does LT really have to be an Ivy leaguer to be good at what he does? It's not exactly the QB of the OL. See that guy in front of you.....keep him from getting behind you for 3 seconds....problem is he cannot hack it at this level.

Right Ric. I've watched this guy and it's not a lack of effort. I don't care WHAT Mike Tice says, there is no raw talented diamond in the rough here. He simply is too slow. His lack of quickness makes him unable to handle quick/agile edge rushers. It's not a situation where you just "work on his footwork" or adjust his technique. The guy is about as quick as a statue out there.

He is not an NFL quality offensive lineman. Period.
