At least this side of the ball is pretty bright!
Its nice to get past all the crap from the GB game on O and look at some considerable bright spots. I know it is early, but damn the DL looks good! I wanna see Paea get in the mix too but Peppers looks as beastly as ever, Melton is kicking ass, Izzy is solid, Shea is off to a good start, and Wooten finally seems to be contributing. Add Okoye and Collins in there and that's a fierce rotation, boys.
Throw in the fact that the CBs have been outstanding, Conte has been solid, Wright hasn't eff'd up badly (yet), Briggs is playing great, Urlacher seems to be gradually getting his legs back, and the D side of the ball looks really really good. If I had told you on Spetember 1st that the D would have 8 sacks, 6 takeaways, and only surrender 3 TDs in 2 games against Andrew Luck and Aaron Rodgers, you'd have taken that deal in a heartbeat and figured "sweet! that means we are 2-0!".
The OL and Tice now have to step up and Jay has to settle down. We have a shot to be really good this year and despite the disappointing performance in GB, no one in the NFC looks all that dominant except maybe the Niners. Heck no one in the AFC looks great either. Saw a stat on ESPN recently: this year has the most 1-1 teams and the fewest 2-0 teams at this point in any season in the history of the NFL. We are in decent shape and, call me a homer, there's no reason why we can't reach the bye at 4-1. We need to beat 2 bad-to-mediocre teams and traditionally handle Tony Homo pretty well.

The defense was solid against GB. Special teams gave up the TD. Briggs did drop an interception. Other than that they held a high-powered GB offense in reasonable check.
Trestman - Kromer - Tucker - DeCamillis
I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

Wootton is beginning to look like the guy we thought he might become. If he stays healthy for once I'd say we're looking at Izzy's heir at LDE. He's got the size you look for over there so what he needs now is the experience. If he can learn to rush from DT too like Izzy's does he'll be exactly what we've been looking for and McClellin can continue to be used like the weapon he is.
Paea is still recovering from that injury he sustained in preseason and not 100% yet. That's probably affecting his initial burst. I'm not worried about him. When he's completely healthy he's a monster to try to block when he shoots the gap. We already saw that in that Minny game last year.
We also don't know what his assignments are all of the time. If we're getting a rush from the other three, and we are, he may be the stay and home guy to guard against the draw play or he has contain when the QB steps up to escape an edge rush. He's playing NT and that makes him the secondary inside pass rusher. Melton is the UT and he's always gonna be firing into the backfield.
Then we still have Collins and Okoye to work into the rotation and both have shown they can get at the QB too. This is the deepest and best pass rushing DLine we've had in years and that's been pretty evident so far. Ric says that Rodgers is on track for 64 sacks and one of the reasons for that is that we sacked his ass and hounded him that last game like we haven't been able to do before.
We have a talented bunch of guys on that line now so if we can get the offense squared around we should be able to win a lot of ball games. Aaron Rodgers got one TD off that defense mainly because we kept giving the ball to him and we sacked him 5 times. Against him that was a hell of a good defensive effort but the offense was pathetic.
Once the OLine can play anywhere near as good as the DLine we should be able to beat anyone but if that never happens you can kiss any hope of the playoffs goodbye. We'll never beat a good team.

I am not entirely worried about the O-Line. Great team this year. Anything less than 10 wins will be a big let down.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Ric, but isn't Bulaga considered a good RT. I know that I read somewhere that he's considered a "premier" RT.

Don't know, ZZ, but Rodgers is on pace to have 60+ sacks this year. And was harassed all night, and not just from McClellin. We have 4 or 5 sacks that night, and constant pressure. Our DL looked absolutely dominant; and I think GB's OL had issues week 1 also(but I really don't follow them so i'm not 100% sure.

Yeah, their line isn't much better than ours, but their receiving corps usually made up for it. Wells and Bulaga were typically the bright spots, IIRC.

Over the last 3 years Rodgers has been sacked more then cutler, and pressured more also. So while I cannot tell you if he's a handfull to get when he's on the move, he can be gotten to. I would say Newton w/out question is a harder qb to bring down, Vick also(maybe not so much anymore). Romo also is a bear to get to. His OL has always been suspect and he finds way to run for his life every time.

JC averages getting sacked 2.68 a game over the last 3 years.
AR averages getting sacked 2.54 a game over the last 3 years.
Spliting hairs there, I'd say they have been sacked the same, not AR more.

Well we know one thing so far. He's a failed LT. He was drafted out of Iowa (Reiff) was his successor to replace Chad Clifton but he's never been able to win the position. In fact the Packers have spent two late first on LTs (Bulaga and Sherrod) and so far neither is playing LT. Newhouse is and he's a mid round pick.
That should give us a little idea of just how hard it's been to find really good LT talent late in the first round of the draft. I think the last name of our next LT is either Long or Clady. I'll be passing out dicks from BBPB's bag of them if Webb ever gets that spot cemented this year.
