Bush ready to fill in for injured Forte

    September, 20, 2012 2:44 PM CT

    By Jeff Dickerson | ESPNChicago.com

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The four-year, $14 million contract the Bears gave running back Michael Bush in the offseason seems like a wise investment now that starter Matt Forte is dealing with a right ankle sprain.

With Forte sidelined in practice this week after injuring the ankle against the Green Bay Packers, Bush is preparing to make his 20th career start on Sunday against the St. Louis Rams. He spent the first five years of his NFL career (Bush did not play as a rookie in 2007) in Oakland where he rushed for 2,642 yards and 21 touchdowns, while also catching 91 passes for 879 yards and a score. He rushed for 977 yards last season and became the Raiders’ featured back when Darren McFadden was injured.

Bush leads the Bears with 26 rushing attempts and two touchdowns scored in short-yardage situations through two games this season.

Talking that all into account, Bush doesn't believe Bears' fans should be shocked by what he is able to accomplish on the field Sunday against the Rams.

"There ain't nothing to show. I've already done it," Bush said. "There ain't nothing to show. I'm in my fifth year now. You guys saw me backing up McFadden (in Oakland) when it was my turn to play. I did what I was supposed to do. It might come in different ways, but I'm getting the same type of production. It's football."

Forte is able to beat teams in several different ways. He ranks fourth in Bears franchise history with 6,418 all-purpose yards, fifth in rushing yards (4,344) and fourth in receiving yards by a running back (2,074). And he has compiled 12 games with 150-plus scrimmage yards, second only to Hall of Famer Walter Payton.

Bush said he doesn't expect the coaching staff to alter the game plan much, if at all, when he is in the backfield instead of Forte.

“They told me when I came here that nothing was going to change, that they were looking for a guy to keep the offense rolling when (Forte) was out,” Bush said.

Hope Bush stays healthy. A. Allen looks like a significant drop in talent, from Forte & Bush. And that may simply be due to his inexperience.

HA i called this!!! i love how 2 years ago Forte would play through a broken back but he stubs his toe and is out now (rollseyes)

I think Bush will be a monster for this team, our second coming of Thomas Jones.

Are you implying that a runningback SHOULD play through an ankle injury of that type, and Forte is gonna take a bavk seat when he comes back?

are you kidding me? What dies he have a pinched vagina lip? He doesnt even have a high sprain! Id tell him to quit his money hungry crybaby ass and get out there and play!!! 20 years ago you would complain about a high sprain and ditka would break it off and eat it and give him the remains and tell him to play on that! the NFL is full of pussies unless your name is Adrian Peterson

You ARE, apparently serious. I need not go into how silly that is, nor mention that DTs were significantly smaller in Ditka's days than today, nor that today's players are a lot faster, nor that the average life of a RB is a lot shorter. I'll not mention any of that, but I will ask you what YOU think his injury actually is...

You completely managed not to pick up on anything about RBs or the NFL as a whole, I see.

while you 2 have ur tit for tat i would just like to say although Forte's injury is unfortunate i believe Bush will raise to the occasion, this is his time to shine and with Forte becoming injury prone this might be his chance to show he's got the moxy to have the spot, plus he does have about 30lbs on forte so maybe he can put that weight in to good use and pound in a few extra yards.......
