Bears vs Rams: Top 5 Matchups to Watch

Sunday’s matchup between the Chicago Bears and St. Louis Rams looked like it would be a cakewalk for the Bears. I don’t think that’s the case any more and I don’t think the Bears will think so either. St. Louis comes into Soldier Field at 1-1, like the vast majority of NFL teams. The Rams may be young but the coaching of veteran coach Jeff Fisher may have this group headed in the right direction. There are a few matchups that I’ll be watching closely on Sunday.
Brandon Marshall vs Cortland Finnegan
This is the featured matchup on Sunday. Marshall was taken away by the Packers’ 2-Man defense 10 days ago, so he’s seeking to bounce back strong on Sunday. In his way stands Cortland Finnegan, the tough, physical cornerback who’s been known to mix it up on the field and get opponents out of their game.
J’Marcus Webb vs Chris Long
JWebb Nation faces another big challenge on Sunday while going up against young up-and-coming pass rusher Chris Long. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s the son of Howie Long. The Bears have shown the willingness for change as they’ve just replaced struggling left guard Chris Spencer with newcomer Chilo Rachal, so another bad game and an upcoming date with DeMarcus Ware could slide Webb to the bench. Last chance anyone?
Danny Amendola vs Tim Jennings
Danny Amendola skyrocketd up fantasy rankings after a 15 catch game last week and has emerged as Sam Bradford’s favorite target. Tim Jennings has been the Bears’ defensive MVP so far, already tying a career high with three interceptions in a season. Size-wise, this matchup is a dead heat. I’ll take Jennings to slow down the only weapon on the Rams offense.
Lovie Smith vs Jeff Fisher
Lovie Smith is already drawing some early fire this season as the Cutler/Webb/DJ Moore shoving and talking about it issue has people questioning whether he has control of his locker room. Jeff Fisher is one of those names that always comes up when a potential Bears head coaching job comes up. He just signed on with St Louis, so he’s not really a viable candidate, but as an ’85 Bear and a long-time successful head coach, Fisher has a bit of a following in Chicago.
It will be interesting to see the styles of these two matching wits on the sidelines. Lovie will try to confuse the inexperienced Bradford with some mixed defensive schemes while Fisher tries to harness the youthful enthusiasm of his Rams to pressure Cutler into another meltdown.
Jay Cuter vs … Jay Cutler
There’s no denying Cutler’s talent. There’s also no denying Cutler is often his own worst enemy. After a poor showing vs the Packers, Cutler will look to rebound on Sunday vs a weaker Rams team. The Rams have a couple of really good cornerbacks in Finnegan and rookie problem child Janoris Jenkins. Can Cutler put his ego in check and take what the defense gives? Can he get his other receivers involved if Marshall and Jeffery are taken away? Can he avoid another meltdown?

I wonder:
1. Will "Good Jay" or "Bad Jay" show up?
2. Can Rachel learn how to pass-block by Sunday?
3. If Marshall is shut down, then Jay needs to go through his reads and find the open receiver. One will be there IF the oline gives Jay the time to progress through his reads. Can the oline give him this time?
4. Tice needs to be sure to take his meds befor the game so he doesn't turn into Martz again. If Tice needs reigned in, will Lovie step in and do that?

With the Bears having virtually a bye week to look at and correct ALL the mistakes they should be able to put a effective game plan together. This should be a defining game one way or the other but I see it as a opportunity for them to make a positive statement that last week was a exception to the rule. They need to come out with a nasty attitude and put the league on notice that they are a playoff team and won't be pushed around by anyone !

Damn straight. First play - knock the entire defensive line on their butts.
Secondly, I sincerely hope Tice used up the entire supply of polyjuice potion he stole from Professor Snape so he can no longer be a Martz duplicate.

I think thats gonna be the ultimate factor " which Cutler shows up". I understand the O-line needs to step it up but if the Good Jay shows up so will the Chicago O line, I have to say when Jay has his 5 yr old fits i see a decline in the O lines morale under the snap, but if Jay can keep it together and LEAD instead of complain, we have a shot at the playoffs. Football is a game of Physical ability but Mental Stability. He has to keep it together out there cuz the opposing teams Defense will feed off the the negativity of our QB.

You bring up a great point about negativity. It's a killer to a team. The opposite is true too. I'm not criticizing the oline or QB in this post, because we've beat that dead horse long enough this week. I did want to comment on that "negativity" point though. Football is a game of momentum and emotion, and not just x's and o's.
I still watch old Bears games from many years ago. Some I've watched many many times. I guess I'll never tire of watching great Bears games
One thing I loved about Jim McMahon was how he was so "positive" with those linemen - even when he got blasted by defensive players and viciously hit or sacked.
Back in the '80's defenses could do SO much more to a QB. You watch those old games and realize 90% of those hits would not be allowed today. In fact you'd probably see some ejections from the game & Goodell would hand out multiple game suspensions.
But Jimbo never got on his linemen. Never.
He picked himself back up (he did jaw and shove defensive lineman after they hit him.....and I saw him drill a dlineman with a ball to the face once......but never his own guy). And you could see that his olinemen would have killed for Jim. Died for him. They quickly would regroup on the next play and do better. They loved the guy.
Granted, the olines McMahon played behind were infinitely better than what we have now. No question there. But Jim never let a hint of negativity creep in to a game. I liked that about him. That's a smart player who can do that.
