LA TIMES: It's official: Refs out of their depth

No matter what side you're on here, I thought this is a good, objective article, regarding the replacement refs.

It's official: Refs out of their depth

    September 26, 2012

Imagine cruising along the freeway at 55 mph and being suddenly transported into the middle of a NASCAR race, surrounded on all sides by world-class drivers racing powerful machines at top speed.

That, according to one Pac-12 Conference football official, is similar to what the NFL's replacement referees have experienced in recent weeks.

“It's not that easy,” said Steve Strimling. “Not everyone can do this.”

The inadequacies of the replacement referees was crystallized Monday night, when Seattle threw a game-winning up-for-grabs pass that was intercepted but ruled a catch, giving the Seahawks a controversial 14-12 win against the Green Bay Packers.

The NFL reaffirmed the ruling Tuesday, even as an intense uproar among players and fans grew to a boil regarding a play that was ruled on by a former Division III football referee.

“I think all of officiating knew that it was going to take a play like this to really wake everybody up,” said Rich Kollen, a retired Division I referee who coordinates football officials for about three dozen community colleges in Southern California.

Lance Easley is the side judge who ruled a “simultaneous catch” between Seattle receiver Golden Tate and Packers safety M.D. Jennings, who appeared to have possession of the ball when both players hit the ground. Another official initially ruled the play as an interception and touchback.

Both officials missed Tate shoving a defender out of the way as the pass came toward them, which should have resulted in a penalty for offensive pass interference.

The NFL requires its permanent officials to have at least 10 years' experience, including at least five in major-college football.

Easley, the least experienced of the Monday night crew, had four years of experience, none above Division III.

In fact, last summer Easley was deemed not ready to officiate at the Division I level, according to Karl Richins, who made the determination along with his staff at the Stars and Stripes Academy for Football Officials in Salt Lake City.

Easley, a Santa Maria resident, is among several referees who went from officiating small-college games to the NFL, which locked out its officials in June after their contract expired. Whereas seven-member NFL officiating crews by policy include no more than one rookie, the replacement crews are all rookies.

“You can imagine how they're feeling as a whole,” said Bill McCabe, whose experience includes three decades officiating football in the Western Athletic and Mountain West conferences.

“They wanted to do it because they knew they'd never get [another] chance, and now I'm sure they're thinking, ‘Boy, I'm not sure I would ever do this again.'”

Across the officiating community Tuesday, there was embarrassment and frustration.

“When you see this, then people have a tendency to question other officials, in the small-college game or wherever,” said Mike Burton, commissioner for the Northwest Intercollegiate Football Officials Assn. for Division II and III schools.

Said McCabe: “It's affected all of officiating. ... It's sad.”

Several longtime college officials described the lengthy and tedious process it takes to rise through the officiating ranks, from working high schools to community colleges, then up through the four-year college divisions and to the professional level.

Strimling said it's not unusual for officials to spend a year or two attending spring practices and scrimmages before being allowed to officiate a small-college game.

“There's things they've called and mistakes they made, and when you get to the NFL level you've already made those mistakes,” Strimling said.

Several top-level Bowl Championship Series conferences restricted their referees from becoming replacements in the NFL, which meant the league had to pull from the lower levels, such as Division II, Division III and the Lingerie Football League.

Compared to other echelons of football, the NFL offers unmatched speed, size and talent — and also a notoriously extensive rule book, said John Pemberton, who has officiated football games on nearly every level but the NFL since 1968.

“An old friend wrote that rule book,” Pemberton said. “There's exceptions to exceptions to exceptions that we don't have to deal with on the other levels.”

Then, the fact that the two referees were not in clear agreement when the play was over — one signaled a touchdown, the other a touchback — made it even worse.

“They couldn't have scripted it any better to make a point that they need to bring back the regular officials,” Pemberton said.

What was the NFL thinking, that refs from the "Lingerie Football League" would be appropriate for professional football at the NFL level?

I read stuff like this and wonder if Goodell has finally lost his mind. Seriously.

    1) another article not talking about the issue that is causint the lockout, and only focusing on the result, yawn.

    2) the nfl has a closed door agreement w/the ncaa not to take div 1 officials during lockouts b/c that is their farm system and they don't want to screw up the farm system. Also those refs do have nfl asperations and don't want to screw it by playing the scab role. so the best choices were never a legit option.

    3) 1st article talking about the dispute and not angleling around it will be the first.

    4) no duh these guys aren't capable; that doesn't mean the nfl has to aquiesse to everything the refs want, many of things actually hurt the nfl worse then a few weeks of bad refereeing.

I thought it was an exceptional article that helps people understand WHY the replacement refs are failing. It wasn't written as a contract issue article.

I agree regarding the refs shouldn't get everything they want contract wise. But the Lingerie Football League? I read that and just about stroked out. I do think Roger Goodell has finally lost his mind. The Lingerie League? You gotta be kidding me.

JABF, but we all knew any of these guys were going to be over their head. Div 1 guys would have been in over there head and we all knew before the season that they wouldn't be in there.

These guys shouldn't be here. Check out my post in the 2 points thread about the current issues. If it was only money/pension I think this would have been handled by now b/c the refs would have backed off the pension.

Lingerie Football League says NFL is using a ref it fired

I just found this article. Apparently one of the refs Goodell got from the Lingerie Football League, is a ref who was fired there.

This just keeps getting worse. It is a PR nightmare for Goodell and the owners. Every major news outlet is jumping on the replacement ref fiasco (not just sports media). The replacement ref controversy was even on the front page of our local newspaper this morning. Goodell and the owners are looking like total buffoons nationwide right now.

This is one reason. Stuff like this:

Lingerie Football League says NFL is using a ref it fired

    By Houston Mitchell September 26, 2012, 6:54 a.m.

Note to NFL: You know you are in trouble when even the Lingerie Football League is making fun of you.

Mitch Mortaza, commissioner of the LFL (which is exactly what it sounds like: Women in lingerie playing football), took a shot at the NFL on Tuesday when he said one of the NFL's replacement referees had been fired by the Lingerie League a year ago because of incompetence.
Mortaza was speaking specifically of Craig Ochoa, a replacement official hired by the NFL. Ochoa was an official during an NFL preseason game and is on call as an alternate during the regular season.

"It was a bit of a shock to see guys that couldn't officiate in our league were officiating in the NFL," Mortaza told Yahoo Sports.
Mortaza says he fired the entire officiating crew that Ochoa was part of.

"The entire crew was released due to several poorly called games which included missed calls, poor judgment and poor presentation for broadcast. They were hurting our overall broadcast caliber. And if it's opening up our players for potential injury, those things raise red flags here. When either of those two things are compromised, it's time to start thinking about parting ways."

Mike Pereira, the former senior director of officiating for the NFL who is now an analyst for Fox, blasted the NFL earlier this year for similar reasons.

"They’ve tried to say that Craig Ochoa ... was a BCS official, that he worked in the Big Ten," Pereira said. "He didn’t work in the Big Ten. He’s not been a major college official.

I don’t think the NFL is going to say that he actually got released midway through the last Lingerie Football League season as a referee. I don’t think the league is going to put that out. The league wants as little out as possible. They don’t want people talking about it. They don’t want me talking about it."

Maybe that there is your problem...years of needlessly and questionable tinkering with the rules to end up with this hot mess of a rule book...

LOL. Why would anyone want to leave the Lingerie League anyway?
My wife would NEVER let me have a job like that

Don't you think SOMEBODY would have foreseen the PR disaster of hiring ex-refs from the Lingerie League? Especially one fired for incompetence as a ref in the Lingerie League.

It's like the NFL plane is in flight but Goodell isn't in the pilots seat. Oh, the humanity of it all...
