Owners letting Goodell be the fall guy for doing their dirty work?

Goodell is scapegoat for ref debacle

It’s no surprise to see NFL players kicking away at Roger Goodell, an attack by Twitter, mostly. If you’ve seen enough prison movies, then you know how it goes: The warden portrays himself as righteous, but really is just making sure the prisoners are broken into submission to help him get what he wants. You can’t wait for the comeuppance.

    THAT HAPPENED

The NFL's replacement official debacle hit a new low Monday night in the Seahawks' 14-12 win over the Packers.

Goodell is no Warden Norton from “Shawshank Redemption,” but the NFL players see him that way. They hate him, and finally have their chance to act on it. So they tweet away about the NFL, against Goodell’s orders, daring him to do something about it. He won’t.

It’s something the players never would have risked before the replacement refs blew the Seattle-Green Bay game. This isn’t just about the refs, though, but also about how Goodell handled Bountygate, player conduct, safety issues and the lockout. Goodell has made some mistakes that deservedly should get him in trouble, but it’s too bad that what’s going to undermine him is something he’s not fully responsible for.

The owners are the ones directing Goodell to act tough against the officials in the labor fight. And what’s surprising is this: While the players are chirping away, what have we heard from the owners?

    Crickets.

They don’t seem to be standing up for Goodell, taking some of the blame for the collapse of their league’s credibility based on their demands.
They aren’t helping Goodell through the mess, either.

If anything, they seem to be offering him up as a sacrifice to the players. If everything keeps going this badly, Goodell is going to take the fall. The owners have him positioned perfectly for it.

Jerry Jones? Even you don’t have anything to say?

“I didn’t see that ending last night,’’ the Cowboys owner said on KRLD-FM radio in Dallas. “I cut it off about halftime.’’

San Francisco CEO Jed York tweeted this: “Good night hanging with family & friends in Youngstown. Did I miss anything on #MNF’’

It’s as if they don’t really even know what Goodell is up to.

You know, last year, New England owner Robert Kraft got all the praise of the NFL media for heroically bringing together both sides during the player lockout, despite his wife dying of cancer.

Now, negotiations continued Tuesday between officials and the league, and not one owner apparently was willing to break ranks and say, “We need to end this referee deal. The integrity of the game is at stake. Safety is at stake.’’

You’d think at least one of these guys would have the courage to step forward.

So far, this has worked out nicely for the owners. They can stay tough on the officials, but use Goodell as the front man. The players can express their anger.

    And Goodell?

The players are sensing his weakness for the first time.

That’s not to say that Goodell is just some sort of puppet. If he were a strong enough leader, then he would be able to talk the leaders into the obvious, that it’s time to give in.

These replacement officials have lost their credibility. Players don’t believe in them on the field. It has led to players taking more cheap shots, figuring they can get away with them. More injuries will follow. Meanwhile, gamblers are losing faith in the credibility of the game, and that’s something the NFL can never have. Too much of the league’s popularity is tied up in gambling. And fans see a game that’s losing its legitimacy.

When all forms of authority have lost their respect, all you have left is chaos. Goodell now is struggling to hold on to his own respect.
Does he deserve all the animosity? Are players right to dislike him so much?

Well, he did overstep during Bountygate, penalizing players without any transparency. He didn’t feel the need to offer up evidence, and wanted people to simply take his word for what was happening. He also wanted to be the appeals process on his own decisions.

    WHAT'S GOING ON?

Touchdown? Touchback? See how it all unraveled Monday night.

And last year, the NFL beat the players in the labor fight.

Goodell stepped in and changed rules midseason on player safety, but I applauded him for that. With so many retired players’ brains turning to mush, and some ex-players even killing themselves in depression, it was a good move. It also was about liability to the league, by the way.
Maybe that directive came from owners, too?

Goodell's job is to represent the owners, who pay him. But the players just have too much built-up resentment toward him to see what’s really happening.

The league office put out a statement that basically backed the replacement refs, and the touchdown call on the Hail Mary. It cost Green Bay a win. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers called the statement, “garbage, obviously.’’ On Milwaukee’s ESPN 540-AM, Rodgers said he wanted to do something that the league would never do: apologize to fans for the product they are seeing.

“I just feel bad for the fans,’’ he said. “They pay good money, and the game is being tarnished by an NFL who obviously cares more about saving a little money than having the integrity of the game diminish a little bit.’’

When he said “NFL’’ did you hear “team owners’’ or “Goodell?’’

The players stand together. The fans, too. They are getting the comeuppance they want. Who would have thought the owners would have been the ones to give it to them?

This has more to do w/the back to back union lockouts and the fact that the players know they caved in and are still mad at themselves for doing it. Goodell, like any in his position is always the front man for the owners that's the very position they take.
He's not weak either. Bounty gate, while reported the judge over ruled him(she didn't but did want a clarification)has not come to it's conclusion and he showed the players the evidence they had and now it's back in the hands of the courts; besides did anyone really think a LA judge was going to rule against a NO's player? The minute that goes to a higher court outside of LA it will be overturned again just like when the players "won" in court in Minny and it got overruled in a higher court.
All this was planned out well in advance, although the monday night game seemed to move it up by a week. The owners wanted to lock them out through week 5, now maybe it will be through week 3 or 4. And both sides have supposedly gotten a lot in consessions from the other.
Heard someone on ESPN say the NFL could fine for all the neg tweets but have basically allowed the players to vent via tweet b/c of the issue; person also hinted that when the stoppage is over they'll tell them to stuff those tweets or else.
Gooddell for all the neg press has actually done a remarkable job. Even w/2 very nasty work stoppages back to back, the viewership is at an all time high, fans still love the game and go to the game even in the midst of a wicked depression(recovery my ass), and the owners are raking in money hand over fist; why would they get rid of him? Players don't like him b/c he's a hardass; but they can blame the retired players for his current actions b/c they are now sueing the league b/c of their safety and he has to show a front that he's trying to make it safer.

The owners got a PR black eye from this replacement ref fiasco that goes beyond sports. As tied to the hapless replacement refs, they ended up the butt end of jokes in every office in America this week.

They have to be embarrassed right now from looking like total butt holes (and inept butt holes at that). No matter what the deal ends up being with the refs - the owners will be perceived by most Americans as having "caved" after mismanaging this whole thing. Perception is reality in the minds of most people. Always has been.

To save face the hapless owners could let Goodell take the hit for the blunder. They could always say he "pulled a Sarah Palin" and "went rogue" on them

They don't give 2 shakes if people think they look like fools; they're to busy counting their billions and laughing at the people that think they care.
The media might well narrorate the story to look like a cave by the owners but again, they aren't going to care as long as they are happy w/the deal. And if their front man took the majority of the heat while giving them two kick ass deals bank they won't let him go easily.

Actually they care very much about how their peers perceive them. And some of these franchises are not doing well financially. So some are not counting their billions, but sweating out the present economic situation, hoping they don't lose their franchises.

Goodell is the extremely well paid hand puppet of owners. We've known this for a long time. I don't feel bad for him at all. As a commissioner he's a jerk and as long as the owners leave him there I hope he'll keep getting exposed like this.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

The owners don't care about "Due Diligence" when they hire a commissioner in ANY sport let alone the NFL. They just want someone who will tow the line and do their bidding. Sad but true.

Of course Goodell is taking the fall for the owners....it's his job to do so.

2-3 years from now no one will hate Goodell anymore, until the next labor stoppage 8-10 years from now. Dude's a straight cold blooded killa for the owners and he doesn't care what anyone thinks about it.

As for those that hate how he punishes players, again remember he's got to show the legal system that he's trying to clean up the game and make it safer for the players b/c of the current lawsuit by retired players AND for future lawsuits when the current players try and pull the same thing. He's got no choise but to come down strong.
