Bears receivers coach Darryl Drake has no problem with Devin Hester lobbying for more touches. In fact, Drake wouldn't have it any other way.
"As a receiver, you better want it,'' Drake said Saturday. "If you don't want the ball, I don't want you. If you don't want the football, what good are you ... what kind of competitor are you?
"Every receiver I've ever known has wanted the football. When I was playing as a receiver, I wanted the football. And those who don't, they don't need to be playing receiver.''
Hester, who has two catches for 27 yards, told ESPNChicago.com that it's hard to be an electrifying player without getting your hands on the ball. Quarterback Jay Cutler obviously has targeted Brandon Marshall (16 catches, 214 yards) more often than Hester. Offensive coordinator Mike Tice talked in the preseason about having a Hester package, but that has yet to be evident.
Hester was targeted in the end zone during last Sunday's 23-6 victory over the Rams, but Hester and Cutler failed to connect.
"I thought it was a tough catch but one he has to make,'' Drake said. "It was high. But every ball is not going to be perfect. Here's our philosophy: Make the ones that you're supposed to make, and make the ones that you're not supposed to make.''
Drake believes Hester will find a rhythm, eventually.
"We're not going to give up on him,'' Drake said. "We're going to keep sawing wood, keep trying to get better.''
