    Devin Hester frustrated with role

What do you guys think about Hester not being used much?

    Devin Hester frustrated with role

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- With two catches in three games, receiver Devin Hester said Friday he is frustrated with his role in the Chicago Bears' offense.

"It's hard being one of the top electrifying players in the league and you're not able to get your hands on the ball as much as you want," Hester told ESPNChicago.com before practice on Friday.

In addition to his two catches for 27 yards, Hester has two rushes for 4 yards and has yet to score a touchdown. Through three games last season, Hester had seven catches for 139 yards.

It's hard being one of the top electrifying players in the league and you're not able to get your hands on the ball as much as you want. -- Devin Hester

Hester almost had his first touchdown on Sunday, but he couldn't come up with a pass from quarterback Jay Cutler in the end zone during the fourth quarter of the Bears' 23-6 victory over the Rams.

"We try to get him the ball. It doesn't always work out, like that one in the end zone (against the St. Louis Rams on Sunday) that was designed for him," offensive coordinator Mike Tice said Thursday. "Basically it was a one-man route. We're trying to find ways to get him the ball. Sometimes the coverage dictates we're going to go to him, sometimes it doesn't."

Cutler acknowledged Thursday that he could have thrown the ball a little lower. On Friday, Hester took the blame.

"I was very excited that I knew the ball had about 75 percent chance of coming to me," Hester said. "I ran the route fine, I got open, I just have to find a way to make that."

Hester isn't sure why he's not seeing the ball more. In fact he was on the field for just 11 of 69 offensive snaps against the Rams.

Asked if making plays -- like the one missed against the Rams -- will earn him more touches, Hester said: "They know I want the ball. I just have to keep working at it, keep my head up, and get better every day. And don't let it distract me."

Of course, Hester made his name in the NFL as a dynamic return man, and he came close to breaking a touchdown in the first two games. His next return TD will tie him with Deion Sanders for the most combined return touchdowns in NFL history.

Hester's 27.3-yard average on kick returns is ninth in the NFL, as is his 11.1-yard average on punt returns.

Receivers coach Daryl Drake said the Bears have a plan for Hester, the receiver, every week.

"I mean, it's just a matter of we don't know what's going to happen during the course of a game," Drake said recently. "We go in with a plan -- sometimes those plans are determined by what happens to us defensively -- but we have a plan for him every week.

And then you have to adjust depending on what's happening in the game."

The Bears have struggled to find a way to consistently use Hester in the offense since they committed to him as a receiver in 2008. He had career-highs of 57 receptions for 757 yards in 2009, but his catches have dropped to 40 and 26 the past two seasons.

He hopes the "Hester package" of plays that was talked about in the offseason and during training camp will be used soon.

"Hopefully it'll come one day, but for right now I'm in the same boat as you guys," Hester said. "I'm trying to figure out when it's going to come.

It's a disappointing feeling. I know what I'm capable of."

He needs to take his frustration out on ST returns. Since JC isn't making his reads and forcing it somewhat to BM I bet other receivers are frustrated too.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

That's my feeling too. Often Cutler is getting time for only 1 read. That's it. And the sad thing is that 1 read is a HEAVILY blanketed B.Marshall. This results in a forced ball to BM - or a coverage sack or fumble, when Cutler hangs onto the ball.

Once Cutler has decent pass protection, and can go through his progressions, then the other WR's can be more involved in this offense. It will be a high-powered offense with better blocking.

Sadly, it may be next year before we see Cutler able to use all of our receiver weapons effectively. All he really has in protection is Louis & Carimi.

I as a personal fan of him(SURPRICE?!) hopes that he'll see the ball more, as we progress into the season. But on the other hand he had, had a few drops if I remember corretly that he should have caught, so that's not doing him anything good. I see Hester most effectiv when he is used a bit like Forte, throw him a short pass, and make him run it to a TD. I'm sure we havn't seen the last thing to the Hester package.

Cutty to BM, yea seems like he is a bit to fixated on him and we saw that in week 1. Ofcause he has been playing with the guy before, and knows him in and out, so no wonder if he'd go for him in the first weeks, I hoped it'd be week but seems like weeks. If I were the new guy in the class and there was someone I knew I'd go and talk with him first. Hopefully this will not turn into a tradition for Cutty because then we might aswell bring Oline mens on the field insted of WR's.

Isn't it time for a return to a TD Devin? I think so.

Even when he does have time for 2 or 3 reads he's still only getting it to BM or AJ/EB on the first 1 or 2. In that StL game, he had more then a few drop backs where he had all day to throw and he didnt even try and read the field.

Actually CATCHING THE BALL would probably greatly alleviate what Hester is frustrated about. Dating back to late last season, DH has pretty much been a butterfingered drop machine since.

I know. We have 2 of the top 15 worst WR's in the NFL for drop rate, based on the past 3 seasons - Brandon Marshall and Devin Hester. The good news is that Earl Bennett has been the #1 guy (lowest drop rate in the entire NFL over the past 3 years).

    Three Years of Drop Rate:
    Wide Receivers

    Khaled Elsayed | 2012/07/02

It’s a new week but we’re continuing our look back at three years worth of Pro Football Focus Signature Stats, turning attention now to our ‘Drop Rate’ stat. A simple enough premise where you look at how many drops a receiver had as a percentage of balls deemed catchable.

We’re going to start off by looking at the wide receivers whose primary job is to catch the ball and make plays. So let’s see which wideouts have done the best (and worst) job in this regard over the 2009, 2010, and 2011 seasons.
For the purposes of this study, wide receivers need to have seen at least 125 catchable balls come there way during the three-year span. That bar for inclusion left us with 61 receivers to consider.

    Opportunity Knocks
Since we’re looking at which players have dropped the most ‘catchable balls’ it’s probably worth looking a little bit at those balls we deemed catchable. Firstly, it’s a simple enough way to determine a catchable ball: it’s a pass that is either caught or dropped. Got it? Good. Let’s move on. It won’t surprise many that the man who was thrown the most catchable balls over the past three years was the Patriots’ Wes Welker. His 363 catchable balls was 33 more than Roddy White in second, and 60 more than Brandon Marshall in third. It says something about the quality of quarterback Larry Fitzgerald has had to deal with over the past two years, with Fitzgerald second in total targets, but way down in fifth when you look at the number of those that were catchable.

Rank Player Current Team Targets Catchable
    1 Wes Welker NE 439 363
    2 Roddy White ATL 494 330
    3 Brandon Marshall CHI 419 303
    4 Reggie Wayne IND 439 300
    5 Larry Fitzgerald ARZ 461 275
    6 Calvin Johnson DET 413 258
    7 Marques Colston NO 331 253
    8 Andre Johnson HST 332 239
    9 Santana Moss WAS 345 233
    10 Percy Harvin MIN 307 232

    Dropping the Ball
It won’t be a surprise that those with more opportunity have tended to drop the most balls. Indeed, if you look at Wes Welker, his 32 drops were second in the league over three years. The only wide receiver with more than him? New Bears receiver Brandon Marshall who led the way with 35 drops over three years. Chicago will be hoping that linking up with Jay Cutler will help calm this number down, but it’s worth noting that if you go back to 2008 Marshall had 16 drops in that year alone. Other numbers that stand out are the 26 for Chiefs franchise player Dwayne Bowe and the 22 picked up by Pierre Garcon, Michael Crabtree, and Donald Driver. All three head into 2012 with various questions (can they step up as a No. 1 receiver?/how much have they got left?) and they’ll be looking to cut back on the drops that have plagued them at times.

    Rank Player Current Team Drops
    1 Brandon Marshall CHI 35
    2 Wes Welker NE 32
    3 Roddy White ATL 30
    4 Dwayne Bowe KC 26
    5 DeSean Jackson PHI 25
    6 Santana Moss WAS 24
    7 Pierre Garcon WAS 22
    7 Michael Crabtree SF 22
    7 Donald Driver GB 22
    10 Nate Burleson DET 21

    Drop Rate – The Bad
Now let’s get to the important number. Players like Marshall and Welker may have more drops than anyone else, but Welker doesn’t figure in the Bottom 15 of the 61 players who had at least 125 catchable balls thrown their way over the past three years, and Marshall was just in the Bottom 10. Instead, the worst offender was Roy Williams who has dropped 14.62% of catchable balls over three years. That was narrowly worse than James Jones of the Packers, with the Buccaneers’ Mike Williams bringing in the third highest mark at 13.42%. 49ers fans (and Alex Smith) may want to look away when he sees the drop percentage of some of his receivers (new and old) as Crabtree, Mario Manningam and Randy Moss all rated poorly.

Rank Player Current Team Drops Catchable Drop Rate
    1 Roy E. Williams FA 19 130 14.62%
    2 James Jones GB 20 139 14.39%
    3 Mike A. Williams TB 20 149 13.42%
    4 DeSean Jackson PHI 25 193 12.95%
    5 Brandon Gibson SL 18 141 12.77%
    6 Terrell Owens FA 18 145 12.41%
    7 Donald Driver GB 22 179 12.29%
    8 Randy Moss SF 15 126 11.90%
    9 Dwayne Bowe KC 26 225 11.56%
    10 Brandon Marshall CHI 35 303 11.55%
    11 Michael Crabtree SF 22 195 11.28%
    12 Mario Manningham SF 19 174 10.92%
    13 Pierre Garcon WAS 22 206 10.68%
    14 Santana Moss WAS 24 233 10.30%
    15 Devin Hester CHI 14 136 10.29%

    Drop Rate – The Best
To the best, and up at the top there’s a name that won’t surprise many Bears fans but may surprise many others. Earl Bennett, with just four drops from 127 catchable balls, has the lowest drop percentage of just 3.15%. That wasn’t much better than the ever-excellent Larry Fitzgerald who continues to show remarkable consistency with his hands, dropping an average of three balls each season and just 3.27% of catchable balls. Behind him are less-heralded players like Kevin Walter and Lance Moore, while San Diego fans will be happy to see Malcom Floyd with the fifth-lowest drop percentage, and new signing Robert Meachem down in 11th.

Rank Player Current Team Drops Catchable Drop Rate
    1 Earl Bennett CHI 4 127 3.15%
    2 Larry Fitzgerald ARZ 9 275 3.27%
    3 Kevin Walter HST 5 148 3.38%
    4 Lance Moore NO 5 136 3.68%
    5 Malcom Floyd SD 6 131 4.58%
    6 Reggie Wayne IND 14 300 4.67%
    7 Jabar Gaffney NE 10 197 5.08%
    8 Jason Avant PHI 8 152 5.26%
    9 Austin Collie IND 10 182 5.49%
    10 Sidney Rice SEA 8 141 5.67%
    11 Robert Meachem SD 8 137 5.84%
    12 Michael Jenkins MIN 8 136 5.88%
    13 Anquan Boldin BLT 13 219 5.94%
    14 Mike Thomas JAX 10 167 5.99%
    15 Deion Branch NE 10 165 6.06%

Catching the ball isn’t the be all and end all when it comes to receiving. You need to be able to get open and make things happen after the catch. But, fundamentally, if you don’t secure the ball then your route running is wasted, and you don’t even get a chance to find your way for extra yardage. So the Drop Rate is an extremely useful tool in terms of determining which players have the best hands (though it should be noted not all drops are created equal).
Stay tuned tomorrow when we run down the tight ends to see which at that position have the best and worst hands.

Please catch the ball, Mr. Hester. I can assure you that your "involvement" will greatly increase if you do that first. Start there.

We just got a WR Corp this season, for all intents and purposes,

Marshall and Jeffery are both rookies.

Bennett and Hester are the old timers, they know Cutler in his current incarnation.

But it has to gell ... and it has to gell fast.

I hope it doesnt take eight games for this to click.

Dallas? Man I'd love to see it set loose at Dallas.

    We fuckin know its there.

Marshall at split... Bennett at slot ... Jeffrey at flanker.

Forte and Bush in the backfield.

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM ... that means 5 OL to protect Cutler.

Well at least for one play.
