    Bears-Cowboys: Devin Hester's role

    By Kevin Seifert

OK. We've reviewed the Sunday performances for three-fourths of the NFC North. Now it's time to turn our attention to the Monday night matchup between the Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys. Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m. ET, but the game will be hard-pressed to reach the drama level of last Monday's affair.

We've discussed a few aspects of this game, from the apparent mismatch the Bears' defensive line should have over the Cowboys offensive line, to quarterback Jay Cutler's dismal record in prime-time games on the road, to the Bears' aggressive but unsuccessful attempts to get the ball down the field through three games.

In the last few hours before kickoff, I'd like to focus on the Cowboys' top-ranked defense, and how a potential antidote has to this point not been a part of the Bears offense.

The Cowboys are limiting opponents to an NFL-low 250 yards and 15.7 first downs per game and boast one of the league's top pass-rushers in DeMarcus Ware. An easy and high-percentage offensive alternative to the Bears' downfield throws could include an emphasis on receiver Devin Hester near the line of scrimmage, but to this point Hester has been almost invisible in the Bears' new offense.

Hester has been targeted on five passes, catching two for 27 yards, and has played on 30 percent of the Bears' snaps, according to Pro Football Focus. Late last week, he expressed frustration to ESPNChicago.com, saying: "It's hard being one of the top electrifying players in the league and you're not able to get your hands on the ball as much as you want."

Based on what we discussed over the weekend, I'm not sure Cutler wants to redirect his efforts away from receivers Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery. But you wonder if Hester won't emerge as a bigger factor Monday night -- or whether he should. Just a thought.

NFL Quick Shots: Chicago Bears throwing deep too often

Didn’t the Bears dump Mike Martz because they wanted fewer slow-developing pass patterns? Advancednflstats.com says Jay Cutler is tied with Joe Flacco for highest percentage of deep passes through the first three weeks. A third of his passes are to receivers more than 15 yards downfield.

He ranked 31st and 15th in deep passes in two years under Martz. Short, consistent passing is often the way to go, especially with a line as porous as Chicago’s. Tom Brady has ranked No. 22, 29 and 38 in deep passes the last three years, Drew Brees 23rd, 33rd and 36th. Even Aaron Rodgers ranks 27th, 11th and 10th.

Forte and Bush up the middle for the first three quarters, with some passes thrown in to mix it up. And if Hester throws in a return TD or two, that would be great.

I'll believe that a "Hester Package" actually exists anywhere else but in the mind and the very last pages of Mike Tice's playbook after I begin to see it on the field. In the meantime I'll settle or some nice returns to give us great field position and maybe the chance that he'll break one.

If they bring blitz pressure and double Marshall the way the Packers did those slants should be wide open and it wouldn't hurt to take a shot at a few with Hester running a couple. Somewhere along the line there's a few big plays in there this year for us if Tice will just put those plays into his game plan.

I agree Soul. It would be almost criminal to fail to do this.

I also agree let them double team Marshall, by them doing that it would leave our other WR and RB one on one and those are the guys Cutler should be throwing to.

I like JC, but his first look IS BM, if he doesn't have HAPPY FEET cause of the OL, and can look past BM, the Bears will be OK. Just kinda wish BM was JC THRID read. Atleast JC looked elsewhere then went to a FRIEND.

Here's what they do instead of throwing the ball down field all the time. Short & Quick passes!

Man was a happy boy when Hester got that TD. Best birthday present of the day!
Hester package needs to be played more, he has the speed to make some huge plays. Quick throws and make him run a maraton down in the end zone. Hopefully this will show Tice that they need to use the Hester package more offen, as it can be effectiv.

in 20-30 pass attempts, Jeffery, Hester/Bennett, x TE, x RB need 10-20 of them w/BM getting the rest. of those 10-20 Hester should get 3-5. And all of them should be slants, flats and curls. DH has the speed to adjust to a ball he sees coming at him, but he doesn't have the skill to adjust to a ball over his shoulder unless it's dropped right into his hands.
