Benching him in order to keep him around for much less money isn't making any sense to me. There is still the possibility that he would pick up a better contract in FA after the season.

I have no idea what is going on and I wish a they would fill us in a little bit on this.
I wasn't aware until today that CWill had been deactivated and didn't even dress for the game (with no injury either as a cause). I guess that either tells you that Scott now has Tice's confidence to be the reserve OT or that CW is in the doghouse big time for some behavioral reason. Take your pick.

Biggs went even further and wrote that CWill flat out isn't in the team's plans present or future and needs "a fresh start elsewhere". That's a real head scratcher for me this early in the season. If Scott has indeed come along enough to man the swing tackle position, that's great. CW is a crappy OT anyway. But how you could move him in effect to 3rd on the depth chart at LG is beyond me. Spencer was a fail and Rachal has had two nice games only. There's no way to know yet if Rachal can be "the man" at LG even for this season, much less the future (and he's a FA too in '13). So what's with giving CW the finger right now?

I don't get it. Tice and the whole organization has jacked up CW from the very beginning--he was over-drafted by a mile, then played in the wrong position, then shuffled all over the line, and now he is getting screwed out of a chance to perform where he plays best. He's at least valueable as an experienced reserve who can play anywhere but C in a pinch but they have him behind Spencer whom he outplayed by a mile as a LG.

There's gotta be something else going on here behind the scenes.

Trade him to the Packers for an 8th round draft pick.

Yup. It will be very very interesting if we get a believable explanation. I don't know if he was really a good LG. He certainly was great as a pulling guard, run blocking in space and that is what most of us *see*, but the root-'em-out run blocking and the pass blocking against the might-bull-charge of the NFL DT are, arguably, more important and I never thought he was good at either. I could be corrected, though.

That's a fair assessment IMO. And we know that Tice likes physical over finesse in his OLmen. But it still seems really early to me to be sending out the "CW is dead to us" signals yet. If Rachal, who's not exactly a wall at pass pro himself, falters badly or gets hurt, I'd much rather see CW stepping in at LG than Spencer or EWill.

Then told can't go back to LG where you excelled and need to be a swing tackle. Maybe they will ship him so the team can get some value.

I'm not a huge Cwill fan but the dude was grossly mis-managed.

I'm with shorty on this one and I'd also add that I wouldn't read all that much into this just yet.

The headline were meant to grab attention but I wouldn't exactly call one week on the inactive list a "free fall". We all know that Tice prefers more physical lineman and as it Rachal and Scott may fit that description better than CWill. So maybe Tice figures he gives them a shot.

Rachal seemed to have had a better game that last week and God knows that based on his college career we may have a very good OG on our hands if he ever matures into the player SF though he could be when they drafted him. The jury is still out on that so far.

If CWill remains inactive for the rest of the season then yeah, his fate as a Bear is sealed. But I wouldn't start thinking that just yet. Let's see how it comes down the pike as the season progresses.

I doubt that this will happen but I'd like to see Cwill have a chance to get his LG spot back. Cwill does more than pull well. He gets to the second level, uses his hands well and has way better pass pro. He's a hell of a lot more athletic-that mystic trait Tice enjoys in Webb. For a guy who made the transition from LT to LG where you have to play on the balls of the feet to the heels in OG was a bit impressive IMHO.

I agree that C.Will has been badly mismanaged, and i would like to see him get his fair shot. However, Rachal is playing LG at this time and he sure does play mean. Check the last play of Mondays' game, one cowboy decided to dive for the ball on the kneel down. The Bears most aggressive responder to this was Rachal. I think he intends to take absolutely no crap. From anyone. Ever. I really want to see just how good he is.

I think there is some serious revisionist memory going on here regarding Williams at guard. In 2010, he was horrible. In 2011, he lasted 9 games before getting yet another injury.

At best, Chris was a serviceable athletic body being used at guard. He could move okay in space, but just remember that so could Beekman. That is not as desirable a trait in offensive linemen as durability and drive blocking. We sucked in short yardage situations. And based on interviews I have read with Williams, my impression is that he does not want to play guard long term. He was just doing what he felt was best for the team while waiting for another crack at LT. You watch. I bet when he goes to another team next year, it will be to compete at LT.

I don't need the ghost of a first rounder hanging around in a position he is not suited for just because we drafted him. Look at how Rachal has done with two games at LG. See the improvement curve? That's why Williams is being shown the door. Not good enough where it counts.

He could still help this team in an emergency and save his job. So there is still a chance for the guy.

Maybe he is just not as good as the guys in front of him.

Spencer must be the exception, he has looked poor since he got here.

Spencer was signed to play center, but played well at RG last year. It's why he is here this year at 2.25 million with a 500k roster bonus. They thought he would be starting at that kind of money.

Yes, he sucked as a LG. But Tice probably figured Spencer's success at RG would translate to LG. It helps Spencer's case that Louis is an injury hazard that must be prepared for. It's why he is the active guard and not Williams is because Louis gets hurt frequently.
