Guess you missed the post game follow ups a day later where he admitted he shouldn't have bumped him but said he made no apologies for his frustration with the situation or for yelling at Webb. Where were you when that was happening brother?

I don't know what more he could have done that that.

And it makes no difference whatsoever who the QB is or whether or not he's won a SB or not. If you want to win a SB then you need a strong leader at QB. The guys you named are all strong leaders who at times have gotten in the face of a lineman who wasn't blocking or a receiver dropping catchable balls just like Cutler did with Webb.

The only difference is Cutler gets more heat from the media anytime something they deem negative happens and it's all a steaming pile of horseshit. You want to win football games? Then you want Jay Cutler as your QB. Or would you rather have Rex back with his "deer in the headlights" look when the Pack ate him alive in that game right before we went to the SB?

Rex didn't bother to yell at anyone and he was pissing himself all night long in that face of that pass rush. Gimme Cutler and the yelling anytime over that. I want a QB who doesn't need to be wearing Depends when the heat is on.

During my +30 years, the constant rule of thumb has always been "Praise in public, punish in private."

And, by and large, that is how things should be done and it's a successful practice.

But to correlate to field usage; if you're in the middle of a firefight and one of your troops -by his actions- endangers the rest of your men, you don't wait until you're in private. You get in his grill, right then-right there. It's short-lived. There's no time for reasons why.

Yes, there is a MONUMENTAL difference between the two; one is a life-and-death situation and the other is just a game.

But that warrior mentality takes hold in either circumstance.

You take an elite player and a medicore player, both doing the same thing; they're both assholes, right? But if one is proven and the other is not, you're going to respect the ability of the proven player time and time again... and a professional is going to strive to meet the standards of the winner.

That's how it works.

You can't force people to follow you. You lead by example. When "Bad Jay" is slinging interceptions, should Urlacher publicly yell at Cutler and push him? (I know, sometimes I wish he'd kick him in the groin and send his private parts into the 400 section of Soldier Field :smile:). But that is not the best way to lead.

I go back to Walter Payton. For those of you who watched him play, did you EVER see him humiliate a teammate for blowing a play? No. He was the consummate leader. He was ALWAYS encouraging players. He was a class act, and one hell of a leader. Even opposing teams respected him.

How about YOUR boss? Would you work better getting humiliated in public - or if he pushed you? Does THAT make your boss an effective leader? When I screw up, I appreciate the fact that my boss will talk with me in private.

If any of you have been through leadership training, it's a cardinal sin to criticize your own people publicly. You do that in private. Not because you're a nice guy, but because it is more effective leadership.

You're right; you can't force people to follow you. Your actions are your own, whether or not the person you're dressing down decides to step up or walk away is entirely their own. So did Webb step up on his own, or did he step up because Cutler had something to do with it?

I missed the part where we're comparing Cutler to Payton.

I SO, SO agree with what you say/said. BUT, player are so much different today ,then back then. Look at coaches that got in players faces, they are called a thing of the past. You really can't use the BEST FOOTBALL PLAYER TO EVER PLAY and use him as an example.

You (and these others in this thread) may be right. I guess it is a different world now. Of course my entire adult life I supervised people who had loaded guns & other scary stuff that could put a hurt on you. You didn't jack them up in public. :smile:

That's why I tried to make that distinction; it isn't like Cutler is chewing players out at dinner. It's on the field. You wouldn't jack up one of your people at the barber shop, but in the heat of an engagement... gotta believe that's a different story.

Nobody but you or the press is making a big deal over that Tice thing. If it was such a big deal don't you think the two parties involved would have something more to say about it? You assume he walked away pissed but yet you don't really know whether that was the case or not. Campbell came over to sit down next to Tice so maybe it was actually Campbell he wanted to talk with.

Man the press makes a big deal out of it people follow like sheep even without knowing the whole story of what went on. Assumption and nothing more. Man I'm gettin' tired of this crap week after week. The guy had one of the best games of his career with a 75% completion percentage, two TDs, no picks and a QB rating of over 140 and still there's complaints.

Until he starts walking on water and raising the dead some people will never be satisfied. :rock:

In life and death situations, you are a team. At least that's been my experience. One mistake and one of your teammates dies. I've never, ever, yelled at anyone in a situation like that. Afterwards, we could have some pretty heated exchanges, but I never did that in public. Be a man. Deal with it one-on-one in private. It doesn't make you a leader to berate a subordinate in public.

I don't believe it works in sports either. Like I said, if that were true we'd see Urlacher all over Cutler when he becomes "Bad Jay"......what good does that do? Does that make Urlacher a better leader? I don't think so. Motivate. Encourage. But don't be denigrating your own men in public.
