Bears future looks bleak for Chris Williams

This is a mystery to me. Another Bears 1st round draft disappointment. I wish there was some way we could try a trade and get something for the guy. It reminds me of how we let Cedric Benson go - for nothing in return.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- It's fair to wonder if Chris Williams is playing his last season in a Chicago Bears' uniform.

Chris Williams was inactive for the Bears' game against the Cowboys on Monday.

In the final year of the original rookie contract he signed in 2008, the former first-round pick (No. 14 overall) was a healthy scratch in Week 4 as the Bears opted to activate veteran tackle Jonathan Scott to serve as the backup to left tackleJ'Marcus Webb.

Bears offensive coordinator Mike Tice explained the decision behind Williams being inactive for the first time this season.

"Well we wanted to give Jon a chance," Tice said on Wednesday. "Jon had not suited up. In the minimal role our backup tackle has in the game, we were going to utilize him a little bit in goal line. And also not the only reason, but he’s our backup deep-snapper, too. And a legitimate one. But we wanted to give Jon a chance to suit up. We brought him in. He’s been a good player in this league. And it was his turn up."

Williams started 38 games for the Bears over the past four years and entered the preseason in direct competition with Webb for the starting left tackle spot. Even though he eventually lost out to Webb, Williams did appear to do a decent job at left guard the last few years before he went on injured reserve midway through last season. But when it came time for Tice to bench starterChris Spencer, the Bears passed over Williams in favor of Chilo Rachal.

Williams handled the demotion in a professional manner in the postgame locker room in Dallas, but his future with the Bears does not look promising given these recent events.

CW has virtually no trade value sitting on the bench. If he can't crack the starting lineup and play well, he isn't worth anything more than league minimum to anyone.

I can't help but wonder if another team could use him as an interior lineman where he was a serviceable starter. I'm not saying he was great, but he seemed like our most consistent starter last year. I understand he's not a good tackle.

And maybe he isn't worth anything to anyone, but in my gut, I feel like he'll be picked up by another team and play well for them as a starting LG or RG. Even if we could get a 6th or 7th round pick for him, it would be something back for our 1st round spent on him.

I still get angry over the C. Benson deal. I have a hard time letting it go. It was a stupid pick to begin with, but then we compounded the mistake by letting him walk.

We spent a 1st round (4th overall pick in the draft) on the guy, and let him go for nothing. A 4th pick overall in the NFL draft is a FRANCHISE guy. You don't get many of those kind of picks very often.

After we let him walk, he then goes on to average over 1,100 yards per year for 3 years, and now he's playing for our division foe, Green Bay. That's kind of hard for me to accept. He was cleared of both the boating while drinking charge & the DUI charge. It's not like a Pacman Jones thing.

But even so, I'm fine that we let him go. I'm just not fine with letting a guy like this go for nothing.

This "buying high" with 1st round draft picks and then letting them walk for nothing, just doesn't seem to make sense to me.

p.s. I wonder if C.Will just got into Lovie's doghouse somehow. We've seen that one before. Once that happens you are dead to him no matter what. You're done.

If Cwill is healthy you know pro-personnel scouts will have good tape on him and are just waiting for the Bears to release him. Hell, trade for Clutts back, at least you get a blocker out of it.

There's nothing in that article that indicates his inactive status is an every week thing. I fact Tice says just the opposite. It was Scott's turn to dress for the game.

His career in Chicago may be over or it may not but you guys are reading a lot into things. If he remains inactive for several more games then maybe we'll have a better idea but one injury and he's right back in uniform again.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I thought about that. I hope you are wrong here Mats, but I have the sick feeling in my gut that you are right.

I understand that Soul, but the handwriting is on the wall regarding his future. He's a goner once this season is over.
