Davis

Spaeth

Adams

No ... Rodriguez is NOT a TE.

Not at 6'2" 238 lbs.

K.Davis showed us that all Jay has to do is chunk that ball in his general vicinity and he will go get it and catch it - even if he has to take it away from the defender. Both Spaeth and K.Davis have good hands. Both are 6'7" targets as receivers.

While neither of these guys are going to be vertical threats like a Vernon Davis, they both are weapons - especially in short yardage or red zone situations. I like both of these TE's. Yes, Spaeth too. We simply need to use them.

Part of the problem is that we went from an offense under Martz that had no WR weapons other than possession receiver Bennett - and he chose NOT to use TE's as receivers - to our present situation where we have a wealth of receiving weapons now. So TE's are not priority receiving weapons.

Interesting. I never saw Davis as having consistent hands or fluidity. He looks good on a couple of catches and them drops one or fails to adjust to another. Spaeth's hands do seem good ... his speed however ... not good. I guess I think of those two as very flawed TEs.

I hope you are right here and I am simply too focused on a couple of plays, missing the larger picture. I don't know any actual grades or careful, long-term observation which would be very interesting.

And, as long as I am whining, I don't like any of them as blockers. All okay-ish but none good (despite various talk of Spaeth being brought in as a blocking first TE, or Davis being 'good'). I did luv the double team block Adams had on Ware Monday night. Ware took an upfield rush, Adams stayed squarely in front so Ware had nowhere else to go so he plowed into Adams, nearly putting Adams on his butt. Still that collision brought Ware to a stop too and set him up to get plowed over himself by Big ol' Webb, slightly slow to get there but big when he did, :) Hilarious. Probably can't really afford to have Ware *fully* occupy two offensive players every play, but it sure was fun to watch.

You make some good points RochBear. I'm just going on what I've seen these guys do in training camp, because Martz didn't believe in using TE's as receivers, so they didn't get too many opportunities to catch passes in games. Neither of these guys are going to be Vernon Davis types. But they do BOTH have good hands. And present HUGE targets for Cutler (and as we saw K.Davis to Monday night, they can muscle a ball away from a defender like it's a man against a boy).

In camp, both of these guys are solid receivers. Huge targets too for Cutler.

We have a good problem on offense right now with receivers. There are so many good targets that there aren't enough footballs to go around. I never thought I'd live to see the day that a Bears offense would have so many weapons. It's pretty cool.

Actually, with these guys not getting a lot of fanfare or notice they are flying under the radar of other teams who have to gameplan our "real" receiver weapons. Consequently, with these twin TE sets, we should see one of these guys slipping almost unnoticed to catch a pass to move the chains or for a TD.

I love it.

I'd like to see more of Kyle Adams. Davis needs to be more consistent. Rodriguez is going to be up and down as a rookie both receiving and blocking. Spaeth should be a chip machine and a red zone target. If we garner a legit LT next season I'd be on board with drafting a top receiving TE.

Actually I was referring to them as TE's that shore up a suspect OL.

If they can catch the ball thats great!

They may be what we need to get us thru this season to the DRAFT,

to draft REAL OFFENSIVE LINE players.

Which ... BTW ... would be a FIRST under two different administrations.

Look at our OL ... OK dont look at it.

Our TE's are whats going to keep us alive on the O-LINE.

Rodriguez is really small for a TE. He was drafted as a TE, but is basically 6'2" 230 pound, slow WR, being turned into an H back. He's a totally different animal than our twin towers (6'7" Spaeth and K.Davis).

K.Davis will be consistent if we use him. Like any player who is needed to catch passes, you need to give them work. If you only pass to them once in a blue moon, well, you're not going to get consistency. These TE's were ignored under Martz for a few years. And this year there are so many great receivers that TE's are not getting a lot of looks. Tough for the TE's to be great receivers under those conditions.
