Yeah, I think so. In the sense that he knew that a vicious pass rush would make all the difference to the D and even affect the O. Lucky for him the rest of the team rallied when Shea is still trying to make a difference. The point I was trying to make (not very good I guess), is that the pass rush was even more important than a LT - and you guys all know how much I want a stud LT.

It's a good move. He was green as a gourd when we hired him (zero head coaching experience). He made a lot of mistakes, but he's evolved over the years into a decent HC for Chicago. He will benefit with Emery feeding him better than average talent - better than Jerry Angelo did.

In addition to all this, it's going to be nice to have some continuity. It looks like the Bears have this defense fine-tuned to the point it's always going to be one of the better ones in the NFL. With Toub we will always have one of the best special teams units in the NFL. Emery has stocked the offense with top talent now, and will continue to build it stronger (oline). I think Tice will be a solid OC, getting better moving forward.

With all of this in place, Lovie will be the guy to win a Super Bowl, and keep the team as one of the better ones in the NFL most years.

It would be a shame to blow it all up, now that we've finally got everything in place to win consistently. Let's ride this bubble until it bursts.

none of the coaches that are better than him will be available... keep what you have and the devil you know. Would you want Singletary to replace him?

First off, if Terry Boers heard it from "his guy", you can pretty much count on it not happening.

Anway, it's way too early to sign him to an extension. Let's see how the Bears do through the entire season. If the Bears finish 8-8, that extension isn't going to look good. I think Lovie is at worst an average coach, but the Bears have still had issues with him. They haven't been able to find good OCs to work with him, but admittedly, part of that was the team having bad offensive talent and Lovie not having a longterm contract. I mean, if Tice's offense sets the world on fire he probably gets another head coaching job, and if he bombs out, he will be fired. Either way, we will again have to find an OC who has no relationship with Lovie to come in right the ship again.

Ultimately, it's the players and not the coaching who make the difference (unless the coach is REALLY bad). Lovie didn't become a better coach this year, he got competant receivers for the first time ever and young players on the D-line started maturing. If Emery gives Lovie talent to work with, he will be fine.

While I agree that there aren't many good coaches available right now (except Bill Cowher & Jon Gruden) I do think it's way to early to give him an extension just because the Bears are 4-1. Remember when Josh McDaniels and the Broncos started the season 6-0? Didn't turn out too well, did it?

There are a lot of Lovie haters out there, but if you look closely, it's only fans who have such a problem with him for both fair and ridiculous reasons, e.g., he's not the best in-game strategist (fair), or he doesn't yell enough (ridiculous). Players love playing for him, the owners obviously love him, and he's well respected by other coaches in the league. Is he the most dynamic, exciting coach in the NFL? Of course not, but he has a winning overall record, the defense he built has taken us to the Superbowl, an NFCCG, and to multiple playoff appearances, can the same be said about other coaches since the Ditka years?? All in all, he has been a good coach for the Bears.
All that being said, if Emery and ownership are looking for stability and consistent competitiveness, it may not be a bad idea to extend Lovie's contract earlier, rather than later to keep his costs down (provided the Bears do well this season). Emery, in his first year, has done a great job of assembling a team stocked with veteran and young talent to fill in the gaps we've had before. Locking up Lovie w/ an extension keeps a level of consistency the bears have lacked in years past... A great way to set back that talent would be to start over with a new coaching staff.

UPDATE: Emery and Lovie's son/agent deny that there is talk about an extension.
