Personally, the numbers alone don't tell the whole story. This is why sample size is so important.

For example, a coach can have a great year due in part to his team staying healthy all year, or a key player (or two) can get hurt and an entire phase (say offense) collapses. In the 49ers case, Singletary was brought in to fix the defense, he did. As a result of that, he was promoted to HC. (partly because the franchise couldn't find anyone better) In Singletarys' only year as HC, Gore got hurt and was out for NINE games. This is in addition to Singletary having to straighten out other players. Harbaugh and Singletary may have coached for the same franchise in consecutive years, but the makeup of the team varied greatly in each of those 2 years. This year, the 49ers have dropped a game to the Vikings, and just got a mud hole stomped into them at home by the Giants.

Again, this is why sample size is so important, Can harbaugh sustain his success? Or did the 49ers just get lucky last year?

    Yikes.

Yes I do think he did a good job there. The 49ers were on the brink of ruin before he got there. He straightened out that defense, which is widely held as one of the best in the league.

I also said he had to go because he is a disciplinarian and that can only take you so far. He reminded me of Scott Skiles as a coach. Strong disciplinarian, brings the team back from the edge of disaster. Gets no credit for it.

Harbaugh deserves little to no credit for what that team did last year. It was going to happen regardless, they were good and injury free. If anything I believe his personality just got in the way.

If Singletary was such a great HC, why is he not one now?

Xx, you remind me of Thanksgiving Dinner during my childhood. My favorite Uncle would always say "You've gotta have some Cranberry sauce so you can appreciate how great everything else on the table tastes."

I'm glad you found this site. We needed a little Cranberry sauce.

Edge of disaster? The team was playing poorly before he got there, and continued its poor play until he was replaced. He did not get fired for being a disciplinarian. He got let go because he was a bad coach.

I'm not sure what "straightened out that defense" even means. Did Mike install a defense and they are still using that defense? Well, no, he was just a linebackers coach. Maybe they just internalized his yelling and pulling down his pants behavior so now they play great.

Harbaugh got to the playoffs with Alex Smith as his QB his first year there. He straightened out that team and got playoff production out of them with many of the same cast. Yes, he had a healthy Gore while KIron Mike did not. That's not the whole sum of Harbaugh's success.

Yeah, I was really disappointed when I heard Singletary was going to be a head coach and it wasn't going to be for Chicago. I really thought we had missed the boat. Problem was the boat turned out to be the Titanic.

If you looked any deeper youd see that they were on the rise in 2010, beacause singleterry had them heading in the right direction. Like i said, you dont go from 6-10 to 13-3 over night, it takes a few seasons.

Reminds me of the 2010 lions, didnt win a lot of games but they were on the rise and finished strong.
