Starting a series of articles on greatest games in Bears history...
Hello to all,
For those of you who have been members of this message board throughout the course of its existence, you know that I have written articles chronicling Bears players both past and present as a Staff Writer on the old "DaBearz.com" site as well as historical pieces such as my "famous"/"infamous" works titled "Championships Missed: The Lost Years." Now that I have some free time to pursue a new task at hand, I want to begin working on a new series of Bears historical articles dealing with the greatest games in the history of one of the NFL's truly iconic franchises. I have an idea of at least six games I would like to write about - the 1933 NFL Championship Game where Red Grange makes the game saving tackle with ten seconds left in the game to preserve the Bears' second consecutive NFL Championship against the New York Giants; the 1940 NFL Championship Game, where the Bears set an NFL record that still stands today by defeating the Washington Redskins 73-0, the most points and largest margin of victory ever posted in league history; the 1963 NFL Championship Game, where the Bears upset the heavily favored New York Giants 14-10 on the strength of five interceptions and the total mauling of Giants quarterback Y.A. Tittle; the 1965 regular season game versus the San Francisco 49ers, which the Bears won 61-10 thanks to running back rookie sensation Gale Sayers scoring six touchdowns that Sunday; the 1988 NFC Divisional Playoff, otherwise known as the "Fog Bowl," which the Mike Ditka-coached Bears won 20-12 over former Bear defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan and the Philadelphia Eagles; and the 2006 regular season game on Monday Night Football versus the Arizona Cardinals, where despite Rex Grossman's turnovers, the Bears showed Dennis Green and the Cards just who we really were - a lean, mean, ass kicking machine on defense and special teams.
If there are other games that anyone finds interesting and would like to suggest to me so I can research and write about it, feel free to do so.

Question, in order to be considered for greatest games in Bear's history, did the Bears need to win the game? We've been involved in some fantastic games that we didn't win.

I would say no, Bears needn't have won the games in question. Great games are great games, regardless of who comes out victorious.

I would ask you to consider the (what I call the)"You should never leave a Bears game early." game.
I THINK it was 2006, 49ers at Bears(bit more sure about this), the Bears were getting blown outta the water, the stands were 1/2 to 3/4 empty and Mike Brown hauls in (i think) two ints' late in the game to allow the bears to pull out a squeak by victory. People had left the stadium, thinking the bears had lost, got to their vehicles, turned on the radio to find out that the Bears had won. During the next game, there was a banner hung showing an upheld hand (like one is making a vow) with the comment "I will never leave a bears game early."

I think they had another "Miracle" win against Cleveland the next week. Down 21-7 we scored twice in the last 40 seconds to force OT, Then Mike Brown intercepted another tipped pass & returned it for a game winning TD in overtime for the 2nd straight week! I'm pretty sure it was back to back weeks. But I think it was 2001.

Lookin' forward to these J. Your historical pieces are very popular around here and always well researched and well written.
I'll add a couple of suggestions for you.
Everyone remembers the '86 Super Bowl and many fans have probably watched the highlight video from it so many times that they're on their 4th or 5th copy. But the real battles were the two NFC playoff games leading up to the SB game.
There's was the Giant game and the infamous whiffed punt by Sean Landetta and the Rams game where Singletary dropped Dickerson for no gain on a critical 3rd down run that sealed the Rams fate.
Those were the two post season games where the '85 Bears really "made their bones" and also made believers out of the world as far as that "46 Defense" was concerned. Back to back shut outs of two very good offensive football teams.
I don't believe any team ever accomplished that before them and I don't believe it's been accomplished since either so you may want to take a look at those two.

One of my favorites was the 1984 playoff game in Washington against the defending SB champs & we kicked their butt. I always felt that game jump started the 1985 season. We hadn't won a playoff game in over 20 years. I think Payton ran for over 100 yards & even threw a TD pass if I remember correctly.

Im fairly certain that that is the legendary Bears/Cardinals game you are referencing. Definitely not the Bears/9ers game of 2006, we smashed them 41-10 lol
