Jackie, i think it is because our o-line aucks, and so do some of the blocking te's we already have, not to mention bell sucked too. We need to see who can better help our tackles out while using davis as more of a receiver. We aren't on the cusp of a magical new type of offense here....

Hey guys - new poster here. Go Bears! I don't know about all you guys but I'm nervous about the upcoming game against the Lions. After analyzing the two teams it looks like we have an advantage in defense (although Detroit's run D is playing well) and a slight edge at RB. The only thing that makes me nervous about the defense comparison is that our D has had the luck of the bounce most of the year and has taken advantage with defensive scores, I don't think we can continue the pace. Also, with the lions addition of LeShore I think the RB edge for us is very small to non-existent. I fear that if Stafford can show up for 4 quarters on Monday we could be facing a double digit loss.

Welcome!
I'm a bit worried myself aswell. I fear that our offense might not show up, but what brothers me the most is that if Lions want a chance to go to the playoff they have to win this game. They are really motivated, and it's now or the season is over imo. The Bears can walk away with a lose and still have a good chance of reaching the playoff, the Lions don't.
On the brightside, their Oline look worse than ours they sure did against Philly, puls Stafford were making stupid mistake against Philly so something tells me that he isn't totally over his hip injurie yet.

We have the better team, by far. We're usually solid coming out of the bye week, so that's in our favor too. We're remarkably healthy right now, and I love that fact. Tice has settled down now, and is calling a better game. We have a top-3 defense in the NFL. The oline has improved significantly over the past several weeks.
If Jay can just play within himself and not self-destruct, we have this game won.

It could be that the position is being reorganized before our very eyes.
That position has been revised and revised again at least a dozen times over the years since Ditka re-invented it 50 years ago when he lead the team in receiving.
Tice probably has more uses for his TEs than any other OC in the NFL. When he coached in Minny he had Jim Kleinsasser and that was a re-invention of how a TE was used. He basically became the model for an HBack who does some of what you're advocating but he was never a ball carrier.
These guys are blockers and occasional pass catchers not RBs. Kleinsasser was Urlacher's biggest nemesis when we played Minny. He had the size and speed to go after him in the second level and take him out of plays. And he was damn good at it too. So using these guys as multipurpose players is nothing new. It's been done and being done but I can't see adding ball carrier to that list. Not when they're far better at taking out a tackler than trying to run over or through him with a ball in their hands. That's whole different challenge.
No, you take a guys like Eldridge and use him as a backfield or inline blocker and you throw to him from time to time just to give the other guy something else to worry about but you don't hand them the ball on key downs where a fumble may cost you a score or halt a drive. They aren't used to carrying the ball. They don't practice it and they can be vulnerable to fumbling unless you truly make a a hybrid RB out of one and as far as the Bears are concerned I don't see that happening.
ERod would have been a better candidate for a FB type who may have had the athleticism and size to be a ball carrying FB but nobody uses guys like that much anymore. In order to be effective at it you have to have bulk and run with a low center of gravity like the guy the Pack has, John Kuhn. He's 6' and 250lbs and built like a FB. You don't take 6'5" or 6'7" guys like Eldridge, Spaeth or Davis and ask them to do that. It's not gonna work even if you do think it looks good on paper.
Wiping the slate clean as far as what a TE should be. Yeah, Denver and the NYJ are trying to do that with Tebow at the QB position. How's that worked out so far? It's the NFL jackie not Boise State or BYU. Change comes slowly when it does come and most off the wall offensive innovations fail when they become too easy to defense. Making RBs out of TEs isn't something that will get you much or you would have seen more teams doing it for years because NFL TEs are some of the best athletes on the field.

Welcome to the board Rich.
This one is simple. If we protect Cutler and contain Megatron as well as we did last time we played them we'll win. The Lions can't beat us on the ground. Only giving up big plays can kill us.
Cutler has played well against them so all we need to do is make certain he's got time to find his guys and throw to them because the Lions have a shitty pass defense. This is another test for the Oline. Open some holes and keep the pressure off Cutler and we can roll up some scores on these guys.
This could also be Hester's coming out party. He's due for a long return and the Lions have given up 4 tds off KOR so far this year.

I do agree with you on this one. During the game we are going to need to have Cutler and the rest of the Offense at 100%. IMO Detroit is better then they have been playing and after a win in PHI and Stafford who is having a down year (4 TD's 5 INT's) will be looking to pick it up and they just could do it in front of National TV.

I would have never thought that Aaron Hernandez could rush for 150 yards in a game.
I didnt think he could rush at all ... I was wrong.
He's a TE ... he blocks ... he catches somtimes.
What if too many TE's are on the field at the same time?
How do you defense that with little swift CB's and somwhat bigger Safetys going up against sheer bulk?
Lets say IN THE FUTURE , there are 4 TE's on the field , a Grontkowski who is in the endzone alot , a Hernandez who runs ,
2 more kept in to block ... or could do more. What more could those 2 do? Thats the mismatch.
Under those circumstances ... do you know who the most perfect TE would be ?
BRIAN URLACHER
Yep. Find me those ... put them in Navy & Orange. I can dream ... TE's are thought of as SLOW ...
but why not use them where they are fast?
Ask Grontkowski. BTW ... is Grontkowski a WR who can make a block when needed?
Didnt we have one called MARTY BOOKER ? Or was Booker a TE ? Dont think he was.
Positions get blurred. What gets the job done ?
