Lets keep in mind that all those "lost picks" really didn't matter because JA couldn't draft "O" worth a shit anyway.

fair enough; but in 2009 outside of Williams, he did a fair job, so nothing is certain.

I believe you mean '08, just to let you know. :) No QB can be considered elite if he doesn't produce. However, considering what little attention was paid to the offense before Jay got here, give the guy some credit. He almost made a 1000 yard receiver out of Johnny Knox.

Remeber JA's "it starts w/the QB" comment. The fan base was given an expectation, and bought into it.
Now your asking them to just lower it, forget the lost picks and not be upset b/c well we have a really good qb that needs talent around him. Well guess what, that's what the fan base had been saying for years before Cutty got here, was that the previous qb's didn't have any talent around them.
Reality is what it is, Cutler is not what he was billed as, but still been better then what we've seen from Chicago QB's. But I've never been a propoenent of comparing the current Bears QB to past Bears QB's b/c that's a short mearsuring stick. What's upsetting about cutler is he's had more talent around him then the previous qb's(Orton had a horrid OL also btw) but has not fared exponentailly better considering the teams talent around him.
Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't jettison him from the team, but I understand why the fanbase is upset that he hasn't fared better; and btw I think he's good for more then 1-2 stinkers a year.
Ric, I'm not disagreeing with anything in your post.
Jay Cutler is presently ranked as the #19 QB in the total QB ratings, as of this week (52.8 rating). Just behind Dalton, Stafford, Tannehill & Vick. LINK
The problem is that Jerry Angelo was totally incapable of drafting a decent QB. He couldn't have drafted a guy as good as Cutler if his life depended on it. Seriously. So he had to sell the farm to get Cutler.
Now that we have Emery, I'll bet we could get a guy ranked 19th overall in the NFL (as Cutler is now) through the draft with no problem.
So what do you do?
I say just roll with Cutler. Don't pretend he's elite, but he's pretty good. And pretty good, will be good enough for us to win a Super Bowl with all of the talent we have on this team. Maybe not this year, but we do have a shot now.
I would tell the folks who insist on an elite player on the Bears, to simply appreciate the elite players that we do have.
Guys like Briggs, Peppers, Peanut, Forte and B.Marshall (and for years we enjoyed watching an elite Urlacher too). These are TRULY elite players.
And appreciate Jay for being "good enough" to get us where we need to go.

Trestman - Kromer - Tucker - DeCamillis
I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

He wins a Super Bowl or two and everyone will be saying how great he is. Give Cutler the time I've seen Brady receive in the past and he'll pick apart a defense like he's playing high schoolers. It's a team sport and if the right pieces are in place I think Cutler can be as good as anyone. Sure maybe he's not Brady or Manning (Peyton) but I"ll take him over the rest of em. Given the same exact weapons and protection as everyone else I think Cutler would stand favorably against his peers.
I agree with ya 66. I'm of the opinion that the best QBs & offenses in the last 15 years are ones that have basically played in the same offensive system year after year. Of course there are probably a few exceptions but Peyton Manning, Brady, Rodgers & Brees have basically been in the same offenses year after year. Eli Manning is still getting better each year because he has been playing in the same system the last few years. Even Peyton is running pretty much the same offense out in Denver & they are getting better on offense every week as the rest of the team catches up to him.
I think Cutler, who has never been in the same offense more than 2 years in a row, will get better & better the longer he & the rest of the offense plays together in the same offensive system. He's a smart guy & is as talented as any QB in the league. If Tice is our OC for the next several years the sky is the limit for this offense. JHMO.

Cutler may not be perfect...but I would pull the trigger again on that trade in a heartbeat. A first round draft choice used for a QB is not a guarantee to get a player that is NFL starting material. Even less of a chance when Jerry is the guy making that decision. Cutler may not be "elite", but he is top 10 in my opinion across the league. Even his detractors would probably put him in the top 15ish. Given our history at QB the trade was a great move IMO, even if some think we paid too much. I have a feeling that by the end of this season (if Cutler stays healthy) an awful lot of people are going to STFU with all the criticism.

As far as the OP goes, I thought the editorial was spot on. But the media needs to create stories. Every good story needs a villain / someone to shit on / someone to demonize. Cutler's persona makes him an easy target. The fact that shit like that drives ratings is really a sad commentary on the average NFL fan IMHO, but that is another discussion. The funny part is, he doesn't give a flying f*** and calls them out on it routinely...personally I love that about him.

Anyone who blubbers about The Cutler Trade being the worst trade ever, can be easily tempered with the words 'Rick Meier.'
